How to Paint the Skirting Board Rather than the Carpet!

2024 ж. 18 Мам.

Painting the skirting board where there is carpet can be one of the more trickier painting jobs with the inherent, embarrassing risk of getting paint on the carpet for all to see. In this video I show you how I mask off the carpet before painting using the cheapest materials and best technique I have found to work over the years.
Equipment used in this video:
Packing tape: amzn.to/3o40S6K
Filler knife: amzn.to/3n4KvFI

  • In fact, packing tape often does a _better_ job than (cheap) masking tape, which tends to soak up a lot of the paint, and often doesn't stick to the thing you're trying to protect very well (so some of the paint gets wicked underneath). The downsides are that paint on masking tape stays wet for longer (so you need to be careful with it) and packing tape can stick _too well_ and pull old paint off the surface when you peel it at the end (but on carpet that doesn't really matter, of course).

  • Good idea with the packing tape. My decorator friend says the reason for using masking tape, is that it has a paper finish, and gloss paints dry into it quickly. Packing tape/sellotape etc, has a shiny finish, therefore gloss paints will take an age to dry on it. When it comes to removing the tape, he says its easier to remove, without dragging semi dry gloss across painted skirting boards, and peoples carpets.

  • Great tip & one I have used in the past. My dad was a fanatical DIY painter. He used to strain liquid gloss paint through a pair of my mum's old stockings to make sure it had no lumps!! A tip given to him by my grandmother who was a great decorator. They must have had rubbish paint back then. It must have worked because his paint finishes were like glass. Anyhow, when I cleaned out my dad's garage prior to selling their house I found some strips of contoured white plastic about 800mm long by 30mm wide. They were in an unopened cellophane bag with a Woolworths sticker on them. Turned out they were for wedging in between the skirting & carpet to do the same job as your masking tape. Wedge in 3 or 4 of the plastic strips between the skirting & carpet, pull back the plastic strip & away you go with your brush. As you get to the end of the last plastic strip take out the first one & move it up to the front & so on. However, the plastic strips are too long to be used on a staircase so masking with tape is just about the only way to do that. Keep them coming Stuart.

  • Rarely any need for any type of tape. For skirting use a 1/2inch angled window brush, don't overload with paint & gently splay the bristles as you cut into the carpet. Job done. Tape will leave a mark on the painted surface ( i notice you never gave us a close up shot of the finished article). Mind, i have been doing this for decades so...

    @BrightonDunkz@BrightonDunkz2 жыл бұрын
    • Yep, you could remove the tape before the paint dries,also when painting, don’t load the brush up so much, and try and cut in as if there was no tape iyswim.

      @Enpassantful@Enpassantful2 жыл бұрын
    • that is an inevitable and high risk with leaving the paint to dry for 24hrs as he did in this video. Unless you run a knife blade along the boundary of tape and wood to cut through the paint, there is always a (strong) chance that gloss/satin paint will act as a film and thus be pulled off the wood as happened to you because it is "strong" enough to span the gap between tape and wood during the action of removing the tape Cutting with a knife is obviously time consuming and not without risk of cutting things you do not want cut and leaving a visible score line in the wood if the carpet does not spring back up far enough to cover the score line. Removing the tape before the paint is dry risks creating a mess, particularly if you applied too much paint and there is a pool of paint in the crevice between carpet and wall (such a pool also of course greatly increasing the risk of pull off if done when the paint is dry) There is no single answer. Either way works but both add to overall time as you need to go carefully either with a knife or to avoid paint runs if paint still wet. parcel tape may be cheaper than masking tape, but gloss paint won't soak into it and therefore is more likely to still be wet long after you think it is dry on the wood. for the small extra cost of masking tape I would use that rather than parcel tape and remove whilst paint is still wet - but the main tip is make sure whilst painting not to create pooling.
