Okay the assist thing was actually pretty cool. To know what moves from a Pokémon that wasn’t even born yet? Epic.
Not sure what you were talking about with the switch setting in SwSh. It was in previous games too and all it does is remove the prompt asking if you want to change mons when the opposing NPC trainer's Pokemon faints and they're about to send out the next one. You can still change mons. It pretty much just applies the fair rules of a PVP battle to NPC battles as well
Yeah i thought the same thing
This is exactly how it works. I use this feature to make the game more challenging. It becomes more like an online battle
@@AkamexAris1023 Yea same. After I started using it, I actually can't see myself coming back to the switch prompt. It feels so weird and unnecessary now xd. Feels similar to playing assist mode in Mario Odyssey now
I still remember the shock I had when saw that the Cut move also worked for the tall grass. I'm even sure my child's brain from that time froze for a long time after witnessing that. o.o
IKR? I found out through a misclick of all things! Blew my little brain XD
omg I remember doing it but I forgot
After seeing that I screamed my head off.
If i remember correctly then hypercutter cuts even larger area of grass(with cut).
I have played nearly every Pokémon game ever made. And I literally never even began to think about trying that
Gen 3 can also be played with just one hand too, you can set the L button as A. I used to do that a lot to hatch eggs during class, if was a great fidget toy as well...
Came here to say this. L=A mode in generations 3-7 has been a great boon for me, and also for my cat who sometimes wants her head scratched while I'm playing!
Almost all of the games can be set to L=a
What about b tho
What about Pokémon you didn’t know were “related?” I happened to catch a Skorupi in Sword earlier and noticed that in the Pokédex entry it said that Skorupi and Sizzlipede have a common ancestor
Oh, and Venipede too. Same with Toxicroak and Seismitoad. MandJTV has pointed these out before.
"It really shows Gamefreaks attention to detail" Eiscue used Headbutt *Eiscue flaps wings*
Cinderace used Headbutt! *proceeds to kick the enemy*
For a long time I didn't know that you can use L/R in a double battle to show you HP in numbers in the older games🤷🏽♂️
Hoops:You can catch other trainer's Pokemon Cheaters:Hehe Boi,you're late
I was thinking that too!
nah mate in my case very very very late
also Pokemon colosseum and Pokemon xd gale of darkness: We know that our gimmick
@@Digital-Wave Love that game
In yellow red and blue silver and gold I tried it and it said trainer blocked the pokeball and said lines back like what are you team rocket?
I always cut the grass when i didnt want to run into pokemon when i was little lol!
Same i assumed everyone knew about it
I have played sapphire like 8 times to the end and i had no clue.
I mostly did it in Crystal when I had run out of repels. It surprises me more that this is considered a hidden feature. Sounded kinda logical to me to at least give it a try and cut grass with a move that is literally called Cut. I found it a pity that in later games they removed it.
i tried that once to see if it would work :) & i was in highschool when pokemon hit the states
yea lol i found that out too its slow but can avoid battles.
Did you guys know that in R/B/Y and FRLG you can use the PokéFlute in battle to wake up your Pokémon if they've fallen asleep?
Yeah that’s why I sell all my awakenings after getting the poke flute since I don’t need them anymore
Yeah I remember doing that all the time lol
no i did not, thats awesome!
IIRC though, it'll also wake up opponents.
@@udontneedtoremember4840 yes, I think it will.
You missed crown tundra allows to farm dream balls, making gen 8 the first gen where you can have multiple dream balls, legit, unless i remember wrong
Casual controls in gen 8 helped me a lot when I was taking care of my newborn, she would really only nap on my chest so id kinda be one handed and just thought I was stuck watch KZhead, until I found that setting. VERY HELPFUL!
You can also do somet similar in all the earlier games if you change your settings to l=a
I always look at game options before I start. I guess it comes from the early 8 bit and 16 bit days where options use to have cool stuff sometimes
Okay, that last one literally blew my mind. The fact that this went unknown for such a long time is incredible!
Your head exploded?
Literally blew your mind? My friend, I believe you don’t understand what “literally” means
My favorite ability with a secret second function is synchronize. If your lead Pokemon has it, it ensures that all while Pokemon you meet will have the same nature as it. And with nature mints in Gen 8, you have a way to guarantee that any Pokemon you encounter in the wild will have a nature you want without having to grind or search for mints for that specific instance. I've got a group of Umbreons with Synchronize with one for each Nature, and it makes it much easier to get the nature I want on any pokemon I decide to catch.
This is super cool thanks for sharing, I will be stealing this idea in my own games now lol
Mine's cute charm. Made it so easy to find the female combee and salandit. It was also useful when searching for pokemon that had only a single gender. Synchronize is a close second.
@@zomula7657 Wait, cute charm is one? What does it do, make wild Pokemon that appear have the opposite gender of the one with the ability? That's amazing, definitely need to remember that one.
Another good one is Compoundeyes, as it makes it more likely for you to run into a wild Pokémon with a held item. Great if you are farming for a certain item.
They gave Magikarp a z move so that his splashes can be 10 TIMES MORE POWERFUL
But it’s useless though...

You can play HGSS with one hand too, it's possible to keep the run button held down, and all the things you need the right control pad for, you can also tap the screen (this includes stuff like all battle functions, all PC functions, and even talking/interacting with people in the overworld)
How do you literally never heard of Shift versus set? That has been a feature since Generation 1
But wasn't Shift/Set the ability to swap your Pokemon as your opponent is about to pull out another so you always have type advantage? The one mentioned felt like a whole other feature
@@DarkSaber22 because he described it wrong. You can still switch on your turns as usual. It's the same thing you're used to, I promise.
The few at the end I had never heard of, the Pikachu using thunder or thunderbolt as a light source along with Diamond and Pearl having different rates on holidays are quite interesting. Thank you for the content.
I always used milk drink outside of battle. In gen 2 i never bought potions. As long as you can get to a pokemon center, you can suck your miltank. Everything was fine.
"You can suck your miltank" sentence of the day
@@sirgeen yeah how else you get dat stuff out. They never once give you a glass or a bottle to collect the milk with.
The catch trainer's Pokemon footage was of PokeTips ! Incredible !
Yeah. I am kind of mad he didn't mention him
The description gives credit for every bit of footage he uses
I actually knew of Softboiled healing outside of battle, but not for Milk Drink. Also, they stopped that at Gen 7!?
Yea, they removed field moves unfortunately
@@wisgarus oh
I remember playing let's go catching that first Chansey thinking "hell yeah no more potions" I was disappointed.
@@chanceym4211 damn
The switch toggle isn't hidden as it's been always been in the games, just altered in Sword/Shield.
Dude.. did you just say that Sw/Sh introduced SET and SWITCH style? XD wtf that was been a thing for.. a long time now
It also doesn't eliminate switching, just doesn't immediately offer it when the opponent sends out a new one. You can still switch the same way you would in a battle with another player
Thank you
As far as I know, the switch - set mechanics have been around since the beginning.
I understood it as locking in your pokemon until you kill theirs. Which is different from,set/switch
@@jared805 yeah but that isn’t a feature in SWSH
I found it a pity that in later games you couldn't remove grass with Cut anymore. In Red and Crystal I found it very handy when I ran out of repels. Sure, it also takes a while to repeatedly use Cut, but faster than having a battle trigger and needing to run from it after every step.
I actually knew about the Pikachu trick in Pokémon Yellow. I feel validated.
I actually remember using softboiled as a field move back in Gen 2 I think. I’ve also used Cut on grass too. I knew about the diamond dust event, which is tied to someone’s birthday.
I literally had NO CLUE about Softboiled and Milk Drink... like WHAT 🤯
That's a pretty common thing for me. I was annoyed when they got rid of those extra things you can do outside of battle. Like using teleport
You never had a soft boiled/ milk drink mon? It’s in the Pokémon menu like an HM move would be
Only knew about milk drink but not soft boiled
Milk Drink I knew about, but not Softboiled. I didn't even know Softboiled was a move!
@@criticalblaster458 Same
Does anyone remember that you can duplicate Pokémon in gen 2? Put a Pokémon in the box, save the game, when it says “saving… don’t turn off the power” turn the game off, then when you turn it on again, you’ll have the Pokémon in the box, and in your party.
You could also do it in gen 1 with a link cable. You traded Pokémon with someone and then when the moving through the cable animation started the person with the Pokémon people wanted would turn their game off and the trade would complete. When you opened the game that started with the Pokémon people wanted, it would still be there and it would replace the Pokémon in rhe other players game with that Pokémon.
I did this while they were holding masterballs
You can do it in all games by trading can’t you? Maybe not the most recent ones but I’ve done it in gen 6
Yup. I had an entire box of Mew like that. It was OP as hell and loved every part of it.
It would be great if the last one came back for Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl!
It'll possibly happen because they want to make it a one to one remake
Think about the possibilities for speed running
Just play the original again, why pay 60$ish to play same exact game just slightly better graphics lol
@@joshuasimber8588 original will cost you $60 too if you want to play legally
@@CharlieZColt I mean it's the people who have played it that want the remake of it. So I'm assuming they have it already. Why would people who haven't played it want a remake of something, ya know?
The second to last is changing your battle mode from Shift to Set, right? That's been a feature since Gen 1 😅
No. The set battle mode makes is so that when your opponent's pokemon faints, it doesn't give you the option to switch pokemon. But, at any point in the battle you are still allowed to switch pokemon. You just don't get a free switch when you defeat an enemy pokemon. The feature he discusses makes it so that you are not allowed to switch pokemon at all. So, the first pokemon in your party is forced to remain in battle until it either wins the battle or faints. It is a similar idea to the set battle style but goes a step further.
@@matthewdavenport9549 no that feature exist in all pokemon games you just don't notice
@@yatoisaki8285 Set battle style existed before. The feature described in this video is different from set battle style.
No its literally the same thing that's been around since red and blue. That's how it works, and it's been around in literally every pokemon game.
@@kevinw3601 It may work the same but, what he described is different. So, either it is different or he described it wrong. Set only stops you from having the option of getting a free switch when you defeat an opponent. The way he described this feature in gen 8, he said it literally makes it so you can't switch period. That may not be true as I haven't used the feature but, the description he gave is 100% different from set.
I didn’t know you could catch other trainers’ Pokémon which is cool
Through glitches yeah
@@kagari1426 ok
You actually can toggle the "switch pokemon" option in earlier games like pokemon white 2
wait is that true
It's in the games since the beginning of the series
Ikr shift and set
The trick in Yellow where Pikachu can temporally light up a cave by talking to it is literally one of the most well known, albeit useless features, from the game. Just because you didn't become aware of it until Dobbs mentioned it doesn't mean it was unknown to everyone else too.
It's not useless if you don't want to give one of your pokemon flash, did you not listen to what he said?
@@JamesByronMusic Yes I did, it only illuminates the cave for a split second making useless for casual players and practically pointless for hard core players.
I'm pretty certain the Pokemon swap feature for SW/SH allows you to swap mid battle. You just don't get the option after the opponent throws in their next one. I know this because I actually did use the feature during my playthrough to make the game more challenging.
The earliest I've ever been to a video
If I'm not mistaken, you were able to cut grass all the way back in gen 1. I remember doing it since then anyways.
Yes you were, just a massive waste of time as it makes traveling longer than if you just sucked it up and ran.
@@kevinw3601 but if your Pokémon were low on hp in a nuzlocke and you didn’t have fly or repels then this feature is a huge life saver even if it takes time.
I didn't even realize they took the milk drink/soft boiled field mechanic out in gen 7. Saddening. I really love using that in the gen 4 games tho(actually the gen I figured it out cuz used a Blissey)
I figured it out in gen 3 an had 2-3 smeargles with me an taught em all the useful HM moves..they, We’re a huge help in gen 3-4 when I was exploring..the post game etc Level 50-100 I had with Teleport dig fly soft boil dive surf waterfall whirlpool Cut headbutt strength rockclimb Rock smash false swipe milk drink sweet scent...tried to get one with chatter but couldn’t
Now I understand that cutscene when Arceus creates a new egg.
I knew about the grass cutting along with Softboiled/Milk Drink outside of battle
Me too
Man these facts are epic, kinda sad that we don't have a lot of them anymore.
I think it’s mostly because they were so underused that the developers didn’t bother. Sort of like how Cut used to be able to remove tall grass. No one used it so their was no point in keeping it
I've known about using Cut in tall grass for years. I discovered it when I was 14 while I was playing FireRed.
Switch and set changes whether you can change between fainting opponents Pokémon. You can change during battle but you don’t get the warning of the next Pokémon. That’s always been a feature. And it it’s to simulate play with real people when you also don’t get a free switch after fainting a Pokémon. .
Hmmmm, will it disappoint you, if i say that SET battlestyle was in games since RGBY?
1:53 this right here got me the shiny dratini in pokemon white 2
5:40 i knew this back in gen 3 and was definitely helpful on the lower half of Route 119.
I'm currently doing a playthrough of Pokemon pearl and that last bit of info is going to help alot😁
Magikarp should have a mega evolution but the only moves he can do in the mega form is doing a move called "the ultimate splash"
It should not do any damage, but will always half the health of legendaries and mythicals. But if it attacks mega rayquaza its a one hit ko
Let's be real here: If any not fully evolved Pokémon ever gets a Mega-Evo (provided they will ever be a thing again in the first place) it probably will be Pikachu...
I was sorta hoping, as a joke, that magikarp would get a gigantamax form as well, to match pikachu and eevee for some reason
It’s just an orange Gyarados with less details on its 3D Model
Mega Gyarados: Exsists Me: ……………Magicarp really doesn't need a Mega as it's natural evolution has one already
I remember learning about the cutting grass mechanic from the instruction booklet for pokemon emerald that was in the games box. Also if the pokemon using the cut hm has the hyper cutter ability the range of grass that gets cut is greater
I used the Blissey Softboiled a LOT in Gen 3/4. Saved me quite the load of Pokedollars on other healing items, just full restore the Blissey when done
Neat list video! Thanks for uploading!
Would the roaming legendary go away forever? Can you catch trainers mons consistently or just once?
Cool video! The only ones I knew about were the Softboiled and Cut ones.
This video was brought to my attention via Discord, I'm glad more people get to know about the date thing in DPPT. Although important to note that the 9/11 encounter rate decrease was only present in japanese DP but was removed from the international versions (and is the only one to have been removed with localization).
I feel l knew about this awhile ago hmmm
Great video. Very interest!
About Softboiled and Milk Drink (and their respectful Pokemon) I actually never kept those moves (or the Pokemon either) when I was a child. After I replayed my gen 4 games a year ago, I learned it would be useful to have a tank to take hits while I heal my other guys. It was also pretty cool having a 'medic' in the field to me. I only ever needed to use potions on my healer.
1:00 Assist is literally useless, just hatch the egg.
That last point explains so much. Things like that are the magic of Pokémon
Which is the magic of reality since pokemon is based on our lives
The set/shift option for battle has been around since gen 1. Surprised missingno wasn't part of it
Thank you for the cut tips, i dont know it till now hahaha
These are so fascinating
2:55 lol back in the day me using Z-Splash Solgaleo and mimikyu And as it counts a hitting move no taunt affected plus 3 att for sweeps
The last one makes a lot of sense, when i was playing soul silver on Christmas i caught both a shiny vulpix and a shiny magicarp within an hour of eachother.
Surprised didn't mention toggle text speed or battle animations off. Wonder if can still change the frame for your pause menu like could in first game
8:25 Hmm... I can't help but notice the trainer name on the Sceptile. Was this footage in any way related to Mike, PokéTips Mike?
@Thi-Antra Chirasarn It's in the description.
teleport used outside battle was awesome
Actually casual if you didn't know most of them. The only ones I didn't know were the Latios and the Sw/Sh ones. That last one I've known about it for ages, there were literally information about it everywhere online.
In sword and shield the switch/set battle style says, You can choose if you want to switch Pokemon after an opponent faints or not.
You forgot to mention that if you had a pokemon with the hyper cutter ability use cut on grass it increases the affected radius by one block.
That casual gaming option in Pokemon Sword and Shield for one handed game play has been around for a while. You could play all of the Gen 3 games one handed by setting the L shoulder button to act as A. It wasn't ambidextrous, but it was still one handed play.
A lot of stuff I didn’t know..especially about using cut to cut down bushes not just trees in your way 😅
The thing I didn't know about softboil & moo moo milk was they don't work like that anymore
I was about to say the same thing. Set/Switch has been around since gen 1. Which were my first games too. Dang Pokemon has dominated my gamer life alongside Zelda lol
My mind is blown I will have to keep some of these features in mind for my nuzlocke
There's an interaction feature in the stats screen of the Pokémon in the Gen 5 games that also went completely unnoticed until recently. We previously knew that we can talk the Pokémon to see its back sprite, but we can actually do even more. For example, if you slide fast your stylus through the Pokémon's sprite, it will start jumping from one side to another!
Wait What?!?
I JUST TRIED IT, THIS IS SO OBSCURE AND COOL!
@@Aukejorrit there are other kinds of interactions as well. If you slide your stylus up and down through the Pokémon's sprite, it will start jumping up as well.
Wait people didn't know this was a thing? Lol I use to do it all the time.
Also don't know if people know this but he said something about using Pikachu and Pokemon yellow to temporarily light up the cave for you however you can also in Pokemon yellow as well as red and blue adjust the brightness settings to be able to go through the cave without using flash as well
I actually knew about Cut being able to... well, cut grass XD Tried it once way back in gen 2 after finding out you can select it in your party.
wait how do you make it so you can only switch in a pokémon if one of yours faints in sword and shield? there doesn't seem to be an option for it in the settings menu, just the normal switch/set toggle that's in most games
I am a bit confused on the "set" feature he talks about at 8:38! I don't see such feature in Sword and Shield, it is just the classic Switch vs Set mode, where u have to spend a turn switching Pokemon instead of being asked if you wanna switch whenever your opponent's Pokemon faints.
01:46 I only found out about it this year! XD
I always knew about them, but I thought they were pretty worthless because the Pokemon they're paired up with aren't aggressive. Until I replayed my older games a year ago and realized that I ran to the Pokemon Center a lot when I was a kid. So, I switched to having Milktank as my tank because she can take a lot of hits while I'm on the sidelines healing my other guys. She also effectively healed my Pokemon for my entire journey. I only ever went to the Pokemon Center to heal her, and that became a pretty rare event.
One of my favorites to use especially later in the game when max potion was available, and since Blissey has such a massive health pool, it was very efficient to give her health away to several pokemon and just use one potion on her. This made going through the game much easier.
@@randymotter51 Same. I used Milktank though, and she was amazing at being an efficient wall during battles. Just put her in battle for a while, and heal your other Pokemon while she takes only a bit of damage. Using Milktank/Blissey as a healer/wall saved money, time, and frustration for me.
@@sweedra7899 Absolutely, the only reason i chose Blissey over Miltank was her dummy thicc health and special defense. Otherwise, either one is a great pick for Gold/Silver
@@randymotter51 I picked Milktank because I played SoulSilver, where it was easier to get her early. She has great health like Blissey, but a better physical defense. Special defense isn't really a problem for my team, but that's just me. She also has a pretty good moveset in my opinion, and I just personally like having an adorable cow follow me around all day.
Great video
8:37 So you're saying that SwSh introduced the Set and Switch opt- Wait a minute. Were you joking right there?
8:37 Actually this feature is in every single pokémon game since diamond and pearl...
Yeah, and he said that you couldn't switch at all unless your pokemon faints, which is false. You just can't switch when your opponent sends out their next pokemon when their previous one was defeated. Sounds like he hasn't tried out a setting that many people actually use, as well as it being the setting used in pvp battles. Also, it has been in every game since Red and Green, not just Diamond and Pearl.
Nah... it's been around since Pokemon Red.
What is the theme song that plays starting at 0:36
Now I wonder how far this "holiday feature" goes: You mentioned the Independence Day, so the fourth of July, but would this date be changed to the eleventh of November in a Polish Copy of the game?
I remember something dumb I did in sapphire (the old one) is in the Safari zone thing you can be there forever if you use the bike that jumps and stay jumping in one spot so you can basically just keep encountering pokemon wherever you'd like
"pokemon is obviously a game series" Me: surprised pikachu face
I actually knew about grass cut one I would spend so much time getting rid of the grass in one area
Here's one I haven't seen anyone comment about yet... You know how EVs were prominent for battle tower/battle frontier battles starting in R/S/E/FR/LG? The only thing is that EVs were capped at 512 per pokemon. In G/S (and maybe Crystal?) There were NO EV LIMITS... I only discovered this because I kept grinding Elite 4/Red battles to max out money (both on hand and at home) and well after my team hit level 100 their max HP would still rise incrementally... I ended up with Blastoise/Mewtwo/Typhlosion/Tyranitar with all stats over 300, HP around 450 each and Snorlax HP almost 600 and speed over 200
Using Set rather than Switch doesn't disable the ability to switch between Pokemon unless one faints, it just doesn't give you the option to do a free switch when you're opponent sends out a new Pokemon, you can still switch from the menu in battle. It's standard in a lot of Nuzlockes.
Caves were easy to navigate in gen one, you can even see in the video walls and stairwells are visible in the dark. Sure you'll run into trainers but a good portion are mandatory anyway.
The gen 3 latios battle tower glitch is so cool yet so impossible to do😢 and it can only be done once right? Because if you kill latias/os you can't encounter them again, as i have understood
1. Cool 2. Knew that one. 3. Splash is still not being used lol 4. Nerp, not playing my Switch one handed. 5. Knew this one. 6. yup, knew I could Cut Grass, used it on accident a looooong time ago. 7. I just used a throwaway pokemon for that damn cave. 8. That seems like a MAJOR oversight. 9. That setting sounds like one for people who want a challenge. 10. That's actually some interesting information, wonder if they'll keep it in the remakes.
I think I want to try out the assist ability for ultra moon
I knew about the cut feature at least since Gen 3 I just never used it after because it would still need you to go through the menu and I'd be too lazy to go there every 2 steps.
lmao here i was thinking your channel was finna be about hip-hop news and basketball updates
I know the Cut was mentioned by an NPC in Rub and Sapphire since that is how I learned how to do that. Also the last one was sort of known for a while I remember my buddy telling me that on Feb 14 it was easier to catch a couple of rarer pokemon on Platinum.
I wish safeguard was also an ability that'd be so cool having people freak out because they can't paralyze you lol
I dont see many people talk about this but in emerald, when you go to your rival's house for the first time, if you enter their room and exit a few times, the rival will actually come in the house and talk to you
Damn the grass cutting trick is so underused that even I forgot that it existed.
I only knew about the paralyzed feature.
