‘China’s Infra In Tibet Is Impressive But India Has Not Been Idle’
Recent developments suggest that the Chinese air force’s ability to operate from airfields on the Tibet Plateau have improved considerably, and to the point where they now have an edge over the Indian Air Force. How true is this?
Air Marshal Anil Chopra, head of the Centre for Air Power Studies in Delhi, gives us his perspective on The Gist. He looks at the new dual use airports coming up in Tibet, and the range of fighter aircraft being deployed there. The infra development is in his view impressive and so is the deployment of aircraft in numbers that could be far in excess of what India can put in the air.
But does that give China an edge? Chopra notes that it’s important to look not just at numbers and infra. One should also look at capabilities, operational experience and the flexibility to do more with smaller numbers. Here the Indian Air Force is second to none.
He also points to an undeniable fact: the IAF has planned and fought wars unlike the Chinese air force, which may have engaged in some limited military operations in 1979, against tiny Vietnam.
Tune in for more in this chat on The Gist.

Interesting discussion. Chinese is only buying time under the carb of negotiations. One must be understanding the same, I guess India should have no reason to believe that border issues can be resolved by negotiation. I hope our political leadership and force leadership should be doing more than lip-work, which matters when it comes to actual war.
We're also doing the same thing. Talk them to death while our border infrastructure continues unabated. We need to keep this up for another decade after which China becomes too old as a country to fight us.
There is no doubt that the govt is fully siezed of the matter and is doing the best under the circumstances

Excellent and enlightening discussion- thanks for sharing 👍
It would be very informative to have: Some maps showing locations, Google Earth screen sharing, the Air Orbat for the Chinese airbases, threat perception, airlift capabilty fo force insertion, ...
The "Xigaze Peace Airport" is at altitude 3,800 m and has a runway length of 5,000 metres. The altitude must impact the type of aircraft that can actually take-off and land at that altitude. Aircraft will need special undercarriage, wheels and tyres for very high speed take-off and landing.
All these former service chiefs are the reason we lag behind in indigenous fighter production. They just want expensive shiny foreign stuff.
Are you in the airforce or the defence sector?

@@ON-tk7bp Agreed! But remember that MIC & IAF are like 2 wheels of the cart. They need to work in sync to move forward. If only one works then the cart is just going round & round on the same spot. Until now what I have seen is that the IAF is the STUCK wheel!
Interesting and informative
My question to the guest about his comment @29:27 - how do you expect 16 LCA/year when the order is only for 40? *Addnl order of 83 was given only recently. PAF even without the industrial base, did a better job then you guys in keeping up their squadron strength. You guys are choking India's MIC with your attitude towards it and in the process sacrificing precious pilot lives in obsolete Migs .
Get TATA asap into aircraft production to speed up the process which is essential for our security. TATA's have got international level experience in working in helicopter division with their collaboration with Lockheed Martin.
They already are in partnership with Boeing

We are too dismissive of high altitude PLAAF bases in Tibet and Xinjiang. In case of a two front war we can expect the Chinese to use Pakistani airbases.
How?
@@riteshr9477 The PAF airbases that are equipped to handle J-10Cs can handle PLAAF J-10Cs. Same applies to drones and helicopters. Bombers, AWACS and tankers can land, refuel and range the whole western coast. In short we risk being unprepared on the whole western side.

Indian defence analysts still think in conventional defence requirements. Drones, cyber hacking and AI warfare are also key factors that provide strategic advantages with minimal risk for our military.
ROFL 🤣 Yes I'm sure you're an expert and they aren't.
@@repealsection230forbigtech4 I'm sure you are an idiot 😂
Good strategy entails challenging an enemy and stopping him far from one's borders. We have miserably failed all along. We failed to stop the Pakistanis from occupying J & K, the Chinese in Tibet and Xinjiang and are facing the grim consequences of all these three blunders. We should wake up now to ensure that this does not happen in the case of Taiwan. That will ensure that the Chinese forces, specially the navy, are kept preoccupied in its backyard, reducing the pressure on us.
modi said "na koi ghusa hei". It means nobody has entered. I am so sick of all these people hating on China for either no reason or on false allegations.

Awesome Discussion 👌
What an insidious interview, thank Air Marshal Chopra.
How urgent are the bombers?
If the Indian military can induct Agniveers, because it is felt to be crucial, why can't we install a number of temporary assembly lines for our military requirements, like combat aircraft? Our warships don't seem to have a problem with regards to their building. These temporary assembly lines could become maintenance facilities for the same aircraft. Can't we have a number of small assembly lines operating together? How else can we arm ourselves militarily in a way that is meaningful?
Lamenting 114 , 114 etc .Why don't u quickly produce Tejas mark 1 A .Think one squadren was formed in 2016 .In the six years since only second squadren has been formed. Now make out what HAL has been producing Tejas per year .HAL should have completed 80 odd orders in 3 flat years , which is not a tall order . India is expecting foreign companies producing the aircrafts to expedite , but not themselves .What a irony . Even work on Tejas mark 2 and AMCA should be expedited .They r saying it will take a decade .They r saying only but time will tell the truth.
Meaning security planners are not serious to procure fighter planes, avacs and tefullers, since decades
Google Earth provides good information on Chinese military airports - most countries airports. But Google, in attempting to please the majority of people who use Google Earth on a mobile phone, has actually made the PC version of it worse. Now we must open both the PC and web versions at once to get altitude information.
India has an Indian fighter and plans for a 5th gen Indian fighter. While Rafale may make sense to many, the revised F-16 (the new F-21) comes with partial F-35 avionics and this is the technology transfer India needs. There is no point in focusing on dogfighting capabilities if you are shot down by a missile fired 50 km away.
I don’t think they will buy F21, despite the fact that it has quite different avionics
@@toocooltocare1444 Yes. I think you are right. The FA-18E/F is the plane. The Navy needs aircraft for its carrier and the Air Force wants a foreign fighter built in India. FA-18 only has the F-35 as a competitor for the Navy role. So better to go FA-18 and have one aircraft for two roles at the moment. The F-35 has demonstrated sufficient engine reliability that single engine is the way to go. Also, to achieve better fuel economy and benefit from the capabilities that arise, the engines are getting much fatter. Future supersonic fighters don't have room for two engines.
Very Candid Discussion. Nxt We All For Sure What to Know About The " PRESENT " State of Pakistan Air Force .( Chinese 60% & Rest American Present State ) 👍👍

What is government waiting for why not order 114 MRFA jets ?

And to the host, your smirk @29:30 shows your contempt & biasedness. You could have pointed out to the guest the reason for it mostly lies on IAF.
India need to prepare three front war Ladakh arunachal Pradesh LOC and half front at home.. DAC need to wake up and IAF need 44 squadron..
and Pakistan too 2.5 front
IAF must induct more and more fighter jets .
Thanks a lot for a very informative discussion. Few points I think should be asked. We should be very clear about the geographical properties of China. Tibet and Xinjiang are cold desert sitting at 18000 ft height. There are hardly any cities there. Hence, apart from military assets in Tibet, there are no targets near by. The closest cities and major cities of China are 5000 -6000 kms away. Hence, Indian missiles are not very useful. Whereas, In India there are hundreds of cities, that means potential targets for the Chinese. Chinese military can come to Indian cities and survive easily however, Indian military can go and sit in Tibet, its not physically possible for them. Chinese have such a huge industrial base and supply chain it can manufacture aircraft carriers in six months. And it can supply aircraft in hundreds in a few months. It has capacity to manufacture and supply relevant ammunition for the fights going around the whole globe. Huge Indian population lives in the close proximity of Indian borders. Chinese have the best UAVs. Even their commercial drone manufacturing company DFI drones are very popular with US and NATO armies. All Chinese have to do is drop thousands of drones with explosives in few air sorties in Indian cities. The Chinese don't need missiles to attack India. Cheap DFI drones will do the job for them. Chinese will in a day or two destroy railways, roads, airfields using DFI drones. India has to build missiles which can reach targets 6000 kms or more away. Airforce planes can destroy military assets, but what after that. Two front war is a reality. India is not yet ready for that. Political posturing doesn't help in war. Enemy capabilities are what we need to prepare for. The current situation in Pakistan might be bad, if war breaks out Pakistan can offer its complete border areas to China and it's army on rent. There are enough possibilities and we need to prepare for the worst. Just two days back the Chinese signed a long term road, rail and air network with Nepal. Remember that too. Even Nepal can offer access if it sees India as an enemy; our current dispensation has done everything possible to damage the relationship. Chinese have recently launched a reusable space ship, it can remain in space as a satellite, destroy enemy satellites and come back. Finally, India too has not very trained manpower. We have navy which destroyed its own Submarine by keeping the hatch open. Our navy is just a show piece.
which air craft carrier got manufactured in 6 months?
indian navy is not showpiece, nor is badly trained. nor was the submarine destroyed. it was overhauled for a yr
like that i can too say that china claims that agni 6 range is 8000km. DRDO has also developed anti drone systems and military and paramilitary forces also have anti drone guns. Max range of DJI drones is 8km. and as per my knowledge no indian city is that near, not even alot of villages. Military drones of PLA are full sized and easily picked up on radar. also do u think that a thousands of small drones wont be spotted on radars. Also India has anti satellite capabilities. We do not need to sent any SPACE SHIP to space for that. S 400, akash1n2 ,spyder ,mrsam ,qrsam be like Dola nhi AAya dola after u said about PLAAF aircarft destroying major military establishment. Also in future, mrsam, vssam,BMD and AAD. If DJI dones are so famous, we can easily get hands on one of them to find their weakness. Extreme population density of these INDIAN CITIES u talk about would be like mein chotti bachhi hunn kya, wont they fight back. 100,000 soldiers on china be like hum kya karein abh ghar jayein. pls explian with a force of 100000 tibetians SFF force with atleast 85000 tbetian soldiers in indian army how will we find it impossible to sit in tibet. Like that i can also say Chengdu, where a lot of military industry r located is very close to arunchal pradesh, around 1000km, even our older missiles can reach that target.
Indian leadership is all about managing public expectations. All steps being taken now fm 2020 onwards are too little & too late. Be that as it may, even the steps being taken is mere “tokenism” & power demonstration. The FACT is that WAR with the Sino-Pak combine is a certainity. Not an “if” but its “when”!!!! For that Indian planning, implementation & willingness at higher levels is lacking. All the individual valour of our troops & officers cannot compensate for lack of policy, preparation & higher levels of political & command leadership. The fact that CDS lies vacant is sufficient to show the callousness. And thinking that 36 Rafales will be a game changer is foolishness. Aquisition processes are too tardy. An impending War will not wait for India to get the desired equipment.
One word to describe IAF's inventory situation - "Pathetic". It is an insult to its brave airmen and airwomen. What a travesty!!
Rafale, Su 30 mki be like- mera dola nhi aya dola
The expert is saying, the Chinese are way ahead. We have only will and wish which is more than enough with some lip-work. We are still building......and still buying.....What else can make political leadership happy.
Good discussion. However, this holy grail of 42 squadrons must be buried once for all. This number was decided in 1970s! Do we now need so many squadrons of 4th and 5th generations aircrafts? Please decide afresh on number of squadrons and go for them. And don't waste time on RFPs! Just go with Tejas and AMCAs or with G to G contracts.
We need those numbers especially if we get into a long term low intensity conflict with PRC. And yes Tejas Mk1A in large numbers may be the best way to reach 42 squadrons.
@@adm7038 All I said is - let us not freeze on the number '42'. Reassess the requirements, as we now have much powerful aircrafts and UAVs. And then go ahead.
back then aircraft were specialised, unlike now where one aircraft can do many things. and also the no. of 42 squadrons was constitutionally passed in 1999

India talk about war against China ? Indian don’t talk do it n find out who will win India or China
Our IAF is doomed. No one will ever being up 42 squadrons. Modi is only interested in giving away freebies like gas connections, promising 15 lakhs to each Indian winning elections and waiving crores of loans of the super rich. He has not increased military spending even after taking away lakhs of crores from hard earned savings of the RBI, LIC, ONGC etc. Even after selling stakes in BPC etc. Untill the IAF gets its long overdue 42 squadrons all talk is a waste of time.
Tough situation. Must keep the dynasts out of power as they are only interested in lining their pockets along with officers who wants shiny toys and not interested in doing the right thing. We are already walking a tight rope and need to balance carefully. Tough situation for Modi. Amazing how many battles he is fighting
