  • You can also use an old grubby cutting Matt as a texture pallet as long aa you wipe it down first. You can use anything flat with texture tbh as long as it does not take off fibres and dirt. An even easier dampening pad is to use a moist paper tower.

  • This is the way. I sqear by the cheap makeup brushes from the dollar store. Made my own texture pallet by hot glueing random bits to a plastic tray from dollar tree. Cost like 5$ to make , works like a charm

  • I was SO close to springing for the Artis Opus set this Christmas and didn't pull the trigger. I buy cheaper goat hair dry brushes because the makeup ones are too soft for me. I use pieces of sponge from packaging in a recycled cream eye shadow pot as my dampening pad. For a texture pad, I use a plastic placemat from IKEA that has a tight closed-weave texture. I sprayed it with primer and it works great for testing colors as well as removing paint from the brush. Another thing that works great for taking paint off the brush is a glass cutting board or a porcelain tile. I've used one of those instead of a paper towel for years. I only use paper towels when I'm removing excess paint from the model.

    • 😅 I don't mind if people like using high end boutique stuff. But, I still think there should be budget friendly alternatives talked about too. This hobby can be expensive with just the minis alone. I've grown up using cardboard and cheap materials to make things in this hobby, so I wanted to pass this info on to people. :) Thanks for watching !

  • Why would people buy expensive brushes for dry brushing, it ruins brushes seems silly to me .

  • Unfortunately, and I know this from blowing close to 200 bucks on drybrushes, nothing quite matches the Artis Opus ones. I spent around 15+ hours testing Army Painter, (do not buy, garbage and the hair falls out. Water drips out of the brush all over the minis, complete trash) cheap Chinese "drybrush sets" that cost 15 bucks, and those foundation brushes with the synthetic hair. Can't get the texture you need, the paint doesn't "stick" right to the brush, and then there's the shedding. If you HAVE to save money (I get it), then I would go with the Chinese knockoffs (like Drawnby), they are actual goat hair and while they are not as dense as the AO, they still do an OKAY job. Just be prepared to clean them immediately before use with soap, because they will smell like wet goat otherwise. Army Painter brushes are not worth the price, and honestly I'd get makeup brushes before them - they are complete garbage, shed all over, retain water inside the ferrule, and despite hours of attempts, they just did not apply paint correctly.

    • I have got a newer video comparing Artis Opus, with a cheaper brand and make up brushes and brought up the differences. My channels always been about showing different people's budgets and I know not everyone can afford to pay £90 on Artis Opus brushes or need them. Especially if they are just painting up some cheap minis for a d&d game for painting up some home made terrain. I was fortunate enough that AO sent me out a review copy of the dry brush set.

    • @@ondarkendwings Just to be clear, my comment was not some sort of snobbery or looking down on your video, just adding to it from my experience. I think the best bang for the buck lies in non-branded brushes, and I definitely wanted to communicate just how BAD the Army Painter kit is so that people on a budget didn't make the mistake of buying them, as they are worse than makeup brushes.

    • @@Lanessar8008 Artis Opus are the best ones I've worked with. Yeah, I've heard the Army painter ones aren't that good. And no worries I didn't get that vibe. Ta for watching and leaving comments for discussion. Happy hobbying :)
