During Christmas of 2021, a KZhead channel by the name of NationSquid uploaded a video titled "How One Typo Destroyed Thousands of Computers," which focused on the story of a website known as "goggle, "a typosquatting computer virus that infiltrated the web in the early 2000s, targeting users that misspelled the word "Google." To everybody's surprise, a strange glitch appeared in the middle of the video. Viewers were left scratching their heads and with several details missing.
So, what was the full story?

  • I've got a KZhead story you can cover, if you remember it happening. Some time in early 2010 it was discovered that you could lower someone's subscriber count if you essentially repeatedly clicked the unsubscribe button on their channel. Back then, and before this was patched, the subscribe and unsubscribe buttons worked by essentially having you follow a link to a version of the page where you're subscribed or unsubscribed, depending on which one you started on. You could easily pull the link that does the "unsubscribe" function and repeatedly go to it to lower someone's subscriber count. You could also do it by subscribing to a channel then opening it in a bunch of tabs and unsubscribing in each of them. /b/ coordinated a "raid" where everyone did this to Fred's channel, and it was actually brought down to 0 subscribers. Of course I joined in, and of course I got banned, losing my 600-subscriber+ channel I made in Jan 2007 I had since I was 11 years old. You can still find old news articles and forum/reddit threads on the topic. I can send some links if you'd like.

  • What an interesting backstory! Yeah, the _Goggle_ video was suggested to me by the algorithm, and at first I was wondering what was going on, but ultimately, I thought it was done deliberately to scare the frell out of me. And I loved it because it _really_ worked - I think it was the very first time a KZhead video actually managed to make wonder what was going on. IMHO, leaving the video as it is was the best decision - it's just perfect.

  • I remember watching the video and thinking it was just a KZhead screwup, skipped ahead a bit to when the audio started again and carried on. I didnt even consider that it could have been something intentional, but I'm also not nearly as observant as a lot of other people when it comes to that kind of thing. Anyway, it's definitely a fun story to hear about and I'm glad that such a minor oversight worked in your favor.

  • 8:38 Honestly, I can 100% understand proofwatching after exporting, because I've had my own experiences of glitches that show up on export but not in the editor. I remember when I used to edit Gmod animations in Premier years back, whenever I would export them, there would be this glitch where it skips to a completely different frame and hang on it until it reaches that point in the video. I would constantly have to add very tiny fade transitions to prevent it from happening, as I had no idea how to do so otherwise.

    • @@wayge Yea they do, but in the subtitle options, there is "English", which is actual subtitles uploaded by the video owner, and "English auto-generated", which are automatically generated subtitles for most videos. By default, the "English" subtitles should pop up, and we can see lots of typos in it. Let me remind you that the "English" subtitles are not automatically generated, but the "English auto-generated" subtitles are automatically generated.

    • @@internet_userr lol I know I was just telling that dude where the auto generated ones come from

      @wayge@wayge11 ай бұрын
    • @Jaskaran Virdi yes, but I'm pretty sure he used a third-party tool or service to auto-generate the captions and did some minor editing at the beginning, like adding the [GLITCH] descriptor. The captions are pretty accurate for the most part, with a few mistakes that seem like the kind only a bot would make. I've been very fascinated in the advancement of automatic speech recognition technology, so I'm interested to know what program he might have used to caption this video.

    • @@alexis0a The video wasn't from 'Behind the Meme' like I had initially thought, and was instead from 'Tom Scott'. His video was titled along the lines of 'Why some "remastered" music videos look awful'. Edit: So KZhead basically allowed certain high-profile users to 'remaster' their videos by uploading new videos that then replace a video that was already uploaded and even preserves the same video ID if I recall correctly. Apple likely received access to that feature and used it to correct their adverts.

The battle described in the song occured in 1916, but one band member's uncle had served in WWI and told them the incorrect date. By the time they realized it was wrong it was too late to fix it.)

  • I think that video was when I met this channel. At least explains why I found it, and no, I don't regret it. Beside the video of Bonzi Buddy intrigued me somehow...

  • i really liked this video, the meaning is really eye opening to me. our perspective on perfection and art has been changed by society, we need to remember how most things in our life started. kinda like how a beautiful tree was only a seed in the beginning. i had some editors block recently but this is inspiring to me, perfection does not exist in creation, besides imperfections are the perfection to me :)

  • I watched that video super recently and thought it was a genius way to show what goggle could do to a computer. We love to see happy accidents come through for a topic!

  • When you made that video, my old computer was on it's last legs and I kept it because my new (current) one was going to come way after finals. I thought "well, damn there goes all my stuff for finals".

  • Wow man, really interesting and introspective deep dive into that. I've had the same issue when rendering and noticing a mistake and just keep it for what it is bro. Sometimes a misspelling in the title or anything can cause controversy in the comments and blow it up I guess!

  • tbh, i thought that audio bug in the goggle video was my headphones' connection being weird
