As a keeper, I don't agree since being more in front, even if it's slightly, influences the striker. For the second, it had to be a retake as well. Would it have been scored on the third attempt, that'd have been no shame
VAR doesn’t make the call tho, it’s only there for suggestions in case the ref missed something. At the end of the day it’s the in-field referee that has the final say. The problem is the uneducated refs, not VAR.
I'm french and I feel humiliated from that retake. Respect to Nigeria and sorry for all of this nonsense.

J’ai regardé le match et avec les images de la VAR, y a un angle on voyait très clairement que la defenseure lui mettait une semelle sur le mollet. Le premier penalty est indiscutable, le second est simplement l’application d’une règle pas toujours respectée

Nicolas - People believe that having VAR will make games more fair. In fact, FIFA can use VAR to fix games. They are smart enough to pick and choose how they want to present their story. This was unfair. The French players were already in the box when Van Djik took the penalty and it bothered FIFA?

L'absence d'esprit c'est quand, après avoir marqué le but de la victoire en finale de coupe du monde, Iniesta enlève son maillot pour montrer un tee-shirt en hommage a son collègue Dani Jarque mort quelques jours auparavant, et que l'arbitre, bêtement, lui met un carton jaune parce que "les règles sont faites pour être respectées". Dans ce match, l'esprit aurait été de considérer que Renard avait raté son penalty et que la position de la gardienne adverse, qu'à l'oeil nu l'arbitre n'avait pas jugée fautive (20 cm, tu serais pas un peu marseillais?), n'avait pas eu d'incidence dans cette erreur. L'esprit c'est de ne jamais oublier qu'il s'agit d'un jeu, d'un amusement. Or ici, à la fin du match, les supporters nigérians étaient dégoûtés et les français un peu gênés. Donc, ouais, tout ce que tu dis est factuellement indéniable, n'empêche que ça a tué le match et personne n'a eu l'envie de célébrer quoi que ce soit.
I was so sad for my sister the goalkeeper. The second penalty was wrong because two French players were in the box. How come the the referee didnt go to the VAR. I really dont blame my Cameroonian sisters for their reaction with England even though it was too much with hair pulling and so on.

The initial foul wasn't even a foul. Watch again, the defender went for the ball, and didn't impede the attacker, except for slight contact. Contact doesn't automatically imply a foul!

It's nothing to do wih1 or 2 foot, Goalkeeper can move 2 foot ON THE LINE.
The keeper can move as much as they want, but need to have atleast one foot on/behind the line. Otherwise the goalkeeper would stand directly infront of the ball... It has always been like this, however with VAR this is now being checked.
J Ped yes and no. Before keepers were allowed to be off the line slightly by custom as the referee did not want to retake unless it was beyond obvious. However with VAR it is now exact to the millimeter.

I was there and it was so painful to see. On a positive note we gave France a tough game we stood our ground till the end Nigeria played a great game I am so proud of you all. tomyman the fact she stepped off the line doesn’t matter if she doesn’t save the pk. She could’ve stepped up 5 yards off the line and it still shouldn’t have been retaken. The rule only comes into effect if the keeper gains an advantage from it, which she didn’t cause the shot missed the target anyway.

Two feet or one, the point is that the infraction is supposed to be called if the keeper benefits from it, but the shot wasn’t even on target. If the rule applied to every penalty regardless of where the ball went, we would’ve seen like 90% of pks been retaken in the history of football and no one would be making a fuss today.
I think the whole goalie off the line rule should be changed. From the sound of the whistle the goalie should be able to come off by a foot. Convert that into centimeters if you will. Why should the striker have every advantage here? It's impossible for a goalie at the strike of the ball to just jump to a corner.

I wouldn't say that it has ruined the game because most of the times the system is actually good to see situations again. But I still agree on that this penalty retake wasn't fair. Renard didn't even hit the goal so what's the problem that the nigerian goalkeeper stood too far out.

The rule of the penalty kick saying that the goalkeeper must have minimum one of her/his foot on the line when the kicker touch the ball. If not, it's a fault. It's a new rule since June 1th. Unfortunately for Nnadozie, both of her feet are offline when Renard kicked for the first time. For the second time, Nnadozie had still her right foot on the line when Renard kick the ball. There had the same situation during Scotland vs Argentina match and Jamaica vs Italy. The first kicks were missed too and the penalty had to be rekicked because the goalkeepers weren't on the line. .
Oslo CharlBern the issue is the goalkeeper didn’t have any effect on the penalty taker. She wasn’t saved the penalty was missed so why should the penalty be taken.

I can say categorically that it WAS NOT a penalty, based on the biased one angle-view the VAR guys showed, they didn't show other angles just to persuade the Ref. from seeing the real deal. If they were fair enough they should have shown other angles. By the way a lot of cameras are in use.

@@timothee621 True, and that's fine... but there is the spirit of the rule and then there is the letter of the law. If we all want football governed by the letter of the VAR law, then refs should be instructed - and we should be prepared - to review 98% of all penalty kicks for either a keeper moving early or a player entering the box early. I think you'd admit that movement by either the keeper or non-kick-taking player happens about that often. We should then expect that penalties be taken over, and over, and over, and over until nobody moves a muscle - which I personally think would be a detriment to the sport.

Home town decision against Nigeria. Goalkeeper acted as any goalkeeper does these days, should never have been a second penalty, the penalty taker missed the goal anyway. An unfair result and a biased VAR decision.

That was very harsh on the goalie.....very very harsh. VAR will hinder goalies....silly rule her left foot was very close to the line but it was a natural action of diving. It made not difference because the penalty was missed.

Why did they call it, when the penalty was a full miss?! I thought they review it when the goalkeeper stops it, not when the penalty taker can't get a ball between the two posts.
