Based off the first round there are still deep picks at DT, Corner, and Edge. I was shocked at the pick for sure cuz i was banking on a defensive player at 8 but Penix can ball so im not going to judge it till i see the 2nd and 3 round picks

i'm not very big on Penix, but he was drafted to a good organization for him. Gets to sit a year or two behind Cousins while also being able to come in afterwards with a pretty stacked offense. That being said, can't really justify the pick for the Falcons. Their pass rush is horrendous and they had a golden opportunity to address it and didn't.
i feel like his game is more built for the college game. do left handers do well in the nfl?

@@TheYobo1016 You don’t know that. Aiden Hutchinson was the 2nd pass rusher taken in his class and TJ Watt was taken at the end of the first round. Dallas Turner and Jared Verse are pretty good pass rushers themselves too and would’ve been way better picks than Penix

What I love is people skip over a truth, Kirk is a bag chaser.... While a good player - you always hear the same thought from him, wheres my bag? So Atlanta can feel that energy clearly as he jumped for the bag. So they simply are treating Kirk how he's treated other teams, its about the business Kirk - Get your panties out of a knot and be an adult about the world you've built for yourself...

But Penix is only like two years younger than Cousins... Joking. At best they're trying the Packers QB method. A lot of people asked "Why don't others just do what the Packers do at QB and draft a one to sit for 2-3 years to learn?" Well another team is trying it. Not that shocking. ATL gets 2-3 years of competing with Cousins, by the time his contract is up he'll be 39-40 and Penix will be ready to go (and only 25-26). At worse, they have a fall back plan if Cousins plays like Carr on the Saints.

Penix is two years older than Love, and GB spent a late first instead of an early first. They essentially just spent twice as much draft capital for a player two years older.

I don't see why anyone would be empathetic for Kirk Cousins, who has been the closest thing to an NFL mercenary since he left Washington. He negotiates and signs only for large, guaranteed contracts, which he did twice in Minnesota. He left Minnesota for Atlanta solely because the Falcons offered him the contract with the largest guarantees. Cousins just got to Atlanta less than two months ago -- he has no built-in equity with the Falcons, and he had no such loyalty with Minnesota after six years playing there. Teams with much better quarterbacks who were entrenched in their organizations far longer than Cousins (Joe Montana, Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, etc.) made similar succession plans without involving the incumbent quarterbacks. Cousins' job is to help make Atlanta competitive and help further the development of Kyle Pitts, Drake London and Bijan Robinson over the next two years, and he is getting paid the market value of a quarterback of his caliber. He will be 36 years old at the start of the season and is coming off a ruptured Achilles injury. If Cousins thought he would still be in Atlanta playing until he was 40 years old, then he was delusional.

You think ONE GUY could guarantee turn Atlanta's defense around? If you don't have a good qb, it doesn't matter how good your defense or offense is. I would rather have a franchise qb sit behind and learn from Cousins for a year or two and then be set for the next 8 years than anything else.

Call it a hunch, but assuming that he can stay healthy, I see Michael Penix as a guy who can play 10 to 12 years, but primarily as a backup who will compile stats being the guy who comes in when the starter is out for the season by game 8 or 9 or is signed as a stop gap until a franchise can draft their QB of the future. At best, I think he is a Ryan Fitzpatrick. Which ain't so bad.

You like that the Falcons spent 140million on Cousins and then took a 25 year old QB at 8? That makes no sense. I could make a case for McCarthy because he is young but taking a backup QB at 8 when you are trying to win now is counterintuitive. It also sucks for Penix because he is likely not going to see any significant playing time until he is 30 years old
After having time to think about this I like it. This can be a Chris Chandler Steve McNair situation. Learn for 2 years from the 36 year old solid NFL qb then come in a wreck stuff.
Atlanta fans I`m sorry. Just a couple months ago it looked like the Falcons would have a pro bowl qb paired with the greatest coach of all time and now this. The offense will be good this year but the defense is going to get torched. They had an opportunity to fill a big hole and botched it to draft a bust at qb after just paying top market money for a qb.
It's a smart move the qb classes aren't looking to great for the next few years by the time kirk's gone penix will be ready to go instead of hoping for a guy half as talented as penix in 3-4 years.

I do understand the pick. I know we are all shocked by it but think that Cousins at 35 is coming off an Achilles injury. If he goes down so do the Falcons without a QB. Heinicke?Nah. Morris realizes you can’t win in the NFL with bad QB play. Falcons ignored this fact for the last two years and thought the “genius” of Arthur Smith could overcome it. If Fontenot loads up on defense with the remaining draft picks or can make a trade for an edge rusher, I feel all will be forgiven. Taking Penix and signing Cousins is a “win now and win later” plan.
If he goes down, then we draft a QB next year. If he doesn't and plays well for the next three years, then we essentially got nothing for a top 10 pick. And we have nothing to trade for an edge rusher but our draft picks. There is no such thing as a win now and win later plan. What we are doing is winning a little now, and winning a little later. This is how you become this decades Pittsburgh Steelers. Never good enough to be a real threat.

So what’s the plan here for the Falcons: If Cousins is ok and takes the team to the playoffs, yeah Penix sits a year but is probably expected to play in his second season. Or He stinks or gets hurt and then you shift in Penix. The main issue about both situations is that you paid this QB a bunch of money for the next 4 years and hamstring your cap for WHAT?! Plus it would be difficult to move off Cousins with his contract. Poor salary cap decisions being made in front of our eyes
There is no shot he plays in the second season considering how much they would be paying Cousins to sit on the bench.

Man I love an accurate QB. Its probably the biggest obstical to overcome. Guys do it, Dak is one of the more accurate QBs in the NFL now. Man if your strength is accuracy you have a huge leg up. The problem is, his ability to avoid the rush is really in question. He just couldnt move out of the way of one guy against MI. Colin makes it sound like MI was just destroying them, that was not the case. There was one guy most of the time and Penix panicked or couldnt move out of the way. I thought WA was the better team, and Penix lost that game. There are not a bunch of plays in the NFL where the QB doesnt have to make 1 guy miss, If Penix can do that he could be the best QB in this draft...he is such a great thrower. Of course 2 acl's on the same knee is a big issue as well...this was a bold move Cotton.
I think when all careers are over, MPJ will end up being the best QB from this draft.
@@skarnauch It wouldnt shock me, hes a joy to watch throw a football ( I played QB in HS and short stop in colleg). I really enjoy watching people that can throw that well and effortless. First will be his health, thats the biggest concern, 2 ACL replacements on the same knee is a really big deal. Second, if he can avoid the pass rush, than the sky is the limit. I know his 40 time, but he doesnt seem to have that ability to avoid the rush.
One thing that stands out is that his knowledge of defenses before taking the snap is top notch He said he got tired of getting hit so he just studied defenses which will help him more than anything in the NFL. His ability to process the play and make the right decision is extremely advanced.
@@skarnauch Is all there man. He had the best Oline in college football, by no small margin I think. That may have allowed him to stay healthy. It also allowed him so much time to sit back and show that arm. At the end of the day, if my job was on the line I wouldnt consider drafting him with 2 acls on the same same knee, until at least the 3rd round. Especilaly a guy who appears to have issues avoid the rush.

I love penix but they can’t get out of the cousins contract for at least two more years and they will still have a huge dead cap problem after so Penixs first real season, at 26, will be with a team that has less money than everyone else and he will only have two more cheap seasons after that. Oh and you get the added bonus of having players for the next two years who think you screwed them bc this pick could’ve been used better…and they have a defensive coach Collin, you hate those bc they are legendary QB stumpers…
Clearly they think you don't need any defense to win because their opportunity to draft top defense talent won't be better and they won't have more money to sign one. Best case scenario the Falcons only get 1 or 2 years of being able to get away with paying a rookie salary. So stupid.

Penix took 90 % of his snaps from the shotgun. Does he have the footwork to hand the ball off? Does he have the drop back from under center footwork? Why is no one asking these questions? Please give me some real coverage instead of constantly repeating whatever some other shock jock has tp say.

Colin is going to do to Penix what he did to Jordan Love. A lot of snide remarks for a year or two, a lot of "sources are saying this " crap, a lot of "I don't see it with him; the Falcons obviously made a mistake drafting him"....then Penix will be a lot better than you thought, and Colin will be spending the year backing up and saying, "Look at him!
