Hermitcraft Season 8 Finale Animation - How Far We've Come

After five very long months, it's finally completed. This animation is a tribute to Hermitcraft Season 8's final story arc, the moon crashing into the server.
This was my first ever season watching Hermitcraft and I wanted to find a way to honor the memory of it in the best way I know how, animating ALL 26 hermits and their "endings" on the server. For the members who didn't have proper endings to their seasons, I tried my best to include shots that referenced their final videos in some way. I had to take creative liberties with some of them :)

came back after TFC’s passing and i just wanted to say i’m so grateful for hermitcraft and it’s community. i got the same amount of chills as i did the first, and second time immediately after, watching this beautiful animation.
I like to imagine that this is basically how TFC reached the afterlife, woke up in his mine, jumped into a cart to the next adventure. RIP TFC

As Cleo hugged Joe and ran away to show the sign saying, “Did you get everything you need?” Hurt me. Joe helping the most with Hermits helping Hermits and showing what a good guy he is in the moment struck a chord with me.

The design of Grian and Mumbo really makes me wonder if there could ever be a cartoon of the hermits. Also, I know a lot of people were sad at how short that season was.. but, I mean. There have never really been any Hermitcraft animations quite like this. The shortness of this season really let the hermits experiment and so we were given glorious things like this

Well X is the doomguy from Doom, though for season 8 he did put the axolotl twist on it. But yeah, back in the day a fair few hermits were pre-existing characters, off the top of my head: Dmac was Ash (Pokémon) CubeHamster was Samus Aran (Metroid) Marriland was Buisel (Pokémon) I think Monkeyfarm was still a stormtrooper (Star Wars) when he joined season 1. Pardon me, I got nostalgic there

JUST REALIZED I COMPLETELY FORGOT TO LEAVE A COMMENT ON THIS but goddamn. Rewatching it again and again still feels like a dream. All the hard work you put into this made it so worth the wait dude. The love, care, and passion seeps through every beautifully drawn frame. Character design is chef's kiss as always, the song is perfect, and of course the fluidity of the whole thing ties it all together. It's so cool to be able to have witnessed all the progress you've made and the final result that's been carefully and meticulously handcrafted for it. Absolute banger of a video. On a completely unrelated note; I would give stress, cleo and tfc hugs. They're so huggable in your design lol

It really does hit harder now... I started watching hermitcraft at the beggining of season 8 and one of the creators I was really interested in and enjoyed watching was TFC. Even though I didn't know him for a long time it still hits hard. A few weeks ago I discovered his journey to the farlands playlist and thought "Aw man, I really hope he could finish his goal", but sadly not all goals are achieved

I’m just in shock right now. You’ve actually done it, you’ve finally completed this, and it’s even better than I could ever imagine. Not only is it fully animated and colored, which is a display of outstanding talent and dedication, but you included EVERYBODY in it, and fitted them in with the flow of the event, despite them not having a final episode. This really is a love letter to season 8, and even Hermitcraft as a whole, because my god, there’s just so much here that really shows how big this moment, and this project itself, really was. The hermits displaying their logging in messages upon appearing for the first time in the animation, at separate points in separate places, yet they all see the same moon in the sky. And then later, when the moon finally hits, you can see all of them logging off at once, it’s such a seemingly small detail, but it does show that yes, the world is destroyed, and they’re all gone within an instant. It’s little things that can be seen as fun background things, but hold a great deal of meaning. Things like the “Did you get everything you needed sign” coming into view as Cleo runs away after hugging Joe, aren’t even at the center focus, but you can notice them and feel the same impact. And the animations of the hermits themselves are just phenomenal. There’s so much said within little gestures to each other, and you can really tell what the emotions present are based on how you’ve drawn their expressions alone. The body language is fantastic as well, such as Zedaph rolling his eyes at the moon and turning away from it, displaying how he didn’t care about the approaching calamity, seeing it as nonsense. The movement in motion was so quick, and kept the flow running alongside the song’s flow, with quicker parts being shown through quicker moments, and the slower, more relaxed parts having a less intense display of visuals. The creativity present is so apparent too, like how you interpreted Cub’s conspiracy videos, Jevin’s flying machine, Xisuma and Wels’s time in the End, and even the ends for all the hermits who weren’t present in the finale. Including the hermits suspended in the tanks, wearing their season 9 outfits was just an excellent touch as well. The transitions between the different shots are pictured so well, with different hermits showing parallels between different predicaments (Keralis floating in space shifting over to Ren floating near the ground), or outright connecting to another perspective (did you really have to make my heart hurt so much with that Bdubs and Tango part? I will never recover). And it wasn’t just the movement of the hermits that was so eye-catching, but the backgrounds and framing are astounding. The scale of this event is present with every location, and no matter how many different places you show, the moon is still visible and still in your mind, like this is a planetwide catastrophe. I’m absolutely floored by the camerawork through TFC’s mineshaft, and Boatem falling into the void was an incredible angle to view it from, along with being so fluid. Ever since I’ve heard you were working on this, I’ve been excited, especially since this was about an event I hold so dearly to my own heart, it being my first Hermitcraft season as well. And after seeing this? My expectations have been blown out of the water. This really just feels like one big hug to watch. This is Hermitcraft season 8. This is the culmination of a beautiful season of events. Chris, this is just outstanding. I hold so much respect for you and your dedication to seeing this project through. Thank you for this gift.

I actually cried watching this and seeing the hermits respond in the comments. These people inspire us in so many ways, and seeing not only a beautiful animation but seeing how the hermits loved it as well was too beautiful to not cry over. I may just be emotional, but what are you gonna do?

Chrisrin, I am so excited for this. You’ve been working on this for LITERAL MONTHS and it’s thrilling to be able to see it all pay off in what I guarantee will be a masterpiece. I don’t know what to say. I have a nasty habit of writing really long comments but here I’m just speechless. I’ve been watching since Season 4 and I have seen nothing, _nothing,_ in this community as beautiful as this (though the Last Life animatic of Everybody Wants To Rule The World comes a little close.) The poetic start and end with the slow logins and simultaneous logouts. The artistic interpretations of everyone’s skins, elytras, and escape methods. The voice in the intro actually sounds like Xisuma. This being Gem’s first season and her realization that it’s about to be over. The background art. The way Ren and Doc’s designs/poses so perfectly contrast with each other. The glass flare blocking False and Gem’s eyes. The shot of Jevin casually flying into the moon. The inclusion of EvilX in the logouts. Everyone’s already praised this one but the trip through TFC’s catacombs with all the angles as well as speeding up and slowing down to the guitar. And the song choice. _The song choice._ A song so happy in tone but sad in message, perfectly mirroring S8’s ending, with nobody really getting a happy ending but everyone smiles through it and takes it in stride nonetheless. And making the lyrics line up with the Hermit’s situations. “I believe the world is burning” - Cub theorizing about the burning skull “I can’t remember caring for an hour or so” - Zedaph pretending not to care “I started running but there’s nowhere to run to” - Cleo running away but the portal is deactivated “I sat down on the street, took a look at myself” - Bdubs taking satisfaction that he’s the only person left on the ground “Said ‘where you going, man? You know the world is headed for Hell.’ Say your goodbyes if you’ve got someone you can say goodbye to!” - Bdubs realizing his predicament and sending one last message to Tango “There’s no one at home” - endings for the Hermits who were absent through the end “Oh well, I guess we’re gonna find out” - Mumbo and Grian unsure whether the plan will work The music ramping in intensity as Xisuma descends to the Nether. And not necessarily portrayed in the animation but many of the Hermit’s final episodes were tours of the world or their bases, reflecting on How Far We’ve Come. Everything about this. The animation. The cinematography. The backgrounds. All seemingly done by a single person. It’s inspiring. Aw crap I made a long comment again. I’m surprised if you got this far. Ok bye. P.S. thank you for leaving out Mumbo’s spoiler hat in the meeting, I don’t know if I could’ve taken it seriously otherwise. Edit: Jellie’s little sniff, including Mumbo’s potato skin when he notices moon big, and including Jevin’s plush in his personal belongings. Pearl being right-side-up when everyone else is upside-down. Gem’s fingers slipping down the wall into a fist. It’s the subtleties that make things more perfect.

i love the dichotomy you used in Welsknight and Xisums's ending. The medieval knight in a space ship and the space marine with angel wings.
I just love the tiny little details in some of the Hermits' designs, like how PearlescentMoon has a crescent moon on half of her face, Etho is holding the bells that Kakashi used to train Team 7, Rendog being an actual dog, etc. It's just so lovely rewatching this video multiple times to find more details I've missed :)

I won't lie, this hit me right in the feels. Reliving all those goodbyes and endings in the span of 3 minutes, big oof. you should be incredibly proud of this work and I hope all the hermits get to see this! Also having Pearl upside down in the stasis pod at the end is perfect!

Pearl is also the only one of the boatem crew who wasn’t upside down when jumping into the boatem hole
Cool details, The color of one of false’s Shulker boxes is green. The color of boxes that the Hexagon sold. When zedaph looks down at the world from his ship it’s almost a perfect copy of the real map. When rendog floats across the lightning contraption into doc’s arm, that’s a reference to how he struggled to place the last hermit head as the mood gravity was too strong for him to fight. I’m the end card all of the hermits are floating in tubes, just as they were at the end of doc and ren’s videos in which they said the entire season was a simulation. The start of the video actually features X’s actual voice if you listen closely.

Roughly 3 years ago when grain started his first hermitcraft season, season 6 was when I became a fan. and now many years later I am absolutely in love with this community and this server. From the people playing the game to those making beautiful pieces of art like this one. All I can say is thank you for bringing a tear…no, for bringing many tears to my eyes, I’m not leaving this community and I’m not planning to, I’ll be here to see what you do next. Thank you… ❤️

Words cannot even begin to describe how monumental this feels for the Hermit community. Not only does this animatic solidify and represent an AMAZING surge of community, but it also shows a lot of people just exactly what's going on. Ive had this playing on a loop for a whole hour and I cannot get over the attention to detail that makes my heart fumble over itself, the first viewing I started crying then I made a mistake to start reading through comments and felt even more overwhelmed with happiness. Hermitcraft has been a part of my life for years, 'Lets see how far we've come' I look at the comments and just feel so excited that so many people share in excitement with adventure some of us have been on for years. Seeing every Hermit (within the season) and just the amazing scenery describe this story that had us all hanging on the edge of our seats depicted so perfectly made me sniffle. Theres not been something this massive since the war in 07; and even that was very small when the HermitCommunity felt SO much smaller. Its wonderful to see how much it has grown and how we as members grew up with it, im crying just writing this because its just so brilliant in every single way. The energy behind it, put into it and surrounding it. Happy one year to 08 starters, and happy 10 years of Hermitcraft! This is a friggin heckin amazing day and Im so glad to be a part of this community! Youre all loved!

YOU NAILED IT!! I wondered why I felt so emotional and it wasn't just because of how great season 8 was and this fantastic tribute. The lyrics of this song "let's see how far we've come" just pulls you through aaall the hard work these people have put into hermitcraft and teh community we've built. And although I've only watched from season 7, the nostalgia is still overwhelming, so I can't even imagine being a fan for longer
parts i noticed where the words fit the animation pretty well!! - 0:45 kinda a silly one but cub pointing at the burning skull photo at "burning to the ground" - 1:08 zedaph not paying attention to/caring about the moon at "i think it turned 10 o'clock but i really dont know / then i cant remember caring for an hour or so" - 1:17 cleo not being able to return to the overworld at "i started running but there's nowhere to run to" - 1:26 the parrot flying away from bdubs, and the video cutting to tango losing connection at "say your goodbyes if you've got someone to say goodbye to" - 2:06 i guess this is a future thing, but "it's gone gone, baby it's all gone" o7 TFC - 2:21 okay i guess stress isnt really in a corner. but also that they're the only one left at the base. "there's no one on the corner and theres no one at home" - 2:36 the way grian and mumbo look at each other at "i guess we're gonna find out" (almost as if they're thinking "jump into boatem hole?? this is our plan??? is this safe????") im not too familiar with everything that happens on hermitcraft but i watched this animatic when it was a bit more recent (cant remember when but it was a long while ago) and i still love it!! thank you so much for this!!

I'm left speechless at the first few frames. So detailed and amazing. And WOW, what an honor to be seen by so many of the hermits (I saw this project recommended yesterday, and when I saw Joe had it in his community post as well, I knew I had to check it out.) As always, I'm leaving an in-depth comment because you spent so long on this and deserve all the kudos. I absolutely LOVE the art style. Gorgeous. The design for such a buff Xisuma. Like, he kinda looks like a robot, and looks so derpy and cute, like YES. And the shiny flash across the helmet gives me so much happiness for some reason. Then the growth of the moon, everything crashing and crumbling, the shocked look in his eyes, and then the quick sprint. Every movement is smooth, natural, animated, and alive. GORGEOUS. No clue how you managed to get it to look so amazing, but you've done it and you should be VERY VERY proud of yourself, because you deserve all the recognition you're getting. (And as an artist, I know the feeling of being unworthy of attention or feeling like you could've done better, and I don't know your head, but I want you to know that whatever negativity you might ever have is so untrue and biased because this piece is GORGEOUS and I'd love to even make a FRAME this spectacularly.) The shading and color in all of the hermits. The time and effort that must've taken. THE HANDS!!! THE HANDS MY DUDE!!! HOW???? Some of these poses must've been so difficult, but they look so so good!!! The overview with the shattered savannah!!! Amazing. I love the atmosphere, and how you frame everything around the hermits. The eye centralizes on what matters, keeping the things that need attention be detailed, and everything around it supporting it. 0:13 JUST LOOK AT REN'S TAIL. IT FLOWS AND CURLS SO BEAUTIFULLY I LOVE IT!!! And that worried look in Cub's face. The eyes! The mouth! The spyglass!!! The background behind him. Stalagmites are no joke, my friend. I've tried drawing them, and getting a good shape down can be difficult. You've nailed it. The world looks minecrafty while still holding onto an original art style worthy of being in the best tv series. JOE AND CLEO'S CASTLE!!! YES!!! So detailed, so amazing. HOW? Teach me your ways! HOW? 0:16 Okay, that pose is no joke. That looks like a struggle. May be a lot easier than I'm thinking, but it looks like such a fiddly angle. And everything stays in the correct position and works together. I'm still in awe at this background. AND THE BRIGHT GREEN EMERALD BLOCKS!!! And the way you drew Scar is just so--- AH no words, but amazing. Okay, but Keralis and Bdubs' faces are SO CUTE like my goodness. Just captures their vibe!!! And the way Wels' helmet's whatever-that-feathery-thing-is-called--- the way that flows through the breeze!!! I absolutely LOVE the movement!!! The way the lava bubbles. The shape of the houses beyond. All the DETAIL!!! And again the color composition is just *chef's kiss* 0:20 And that running pose Stress is in. Again, no joke. You're tackling very difficult stuff and it looks amazing. THE WALKING MOVEMENT GEM DOES!!!! AND THE FACE!!!! THE WORRY!!!! All captured so well. And False in the background! The way the hair flows!!! The way the HAIR JUST FALLS DOWN ahhhh! The angles you chose to see everything from. The smooth walking movement Mumbo makes. AND AGAIN THE HANDS!!! HOW??? 0:38 - 0:43 AHHHHH. THIS! This! Movement! The hug pose! I need to take reference of this! So amazingly done!!! 0:46 MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS!!! That quick pull and release to reveal the moon theory!!! I love it! So smooth again! I can't-- And the expressions that follow. The passion in Cub's face. The way it just WORKS with the lyrics. And the hands to the head. There's such a desperation there. 0:54 The determination in the eyes. The smile. There's hope. He's confident. JUST YES!!! That's Cub's vibe the entire time. Worry, but confidently moving forward. And then the smash on the button!!! So fluid! Movement so fluid I have no words to express!!! HOLESTON!!!! HOLESTON BELOVED!!!! The movement in his talking. I was trying something like that in an art project and couldn't figure out how to draw the soundwaves. But my goodness does this look amazing. AND THE DESIGN FOR TANGO!!!! THE EYES!!! The glasses! THE HAIR!!! I just cannot-- This is greatness. My word, this is greatness. 1:02 AND THIS FACE!!! AGAIN. Expressions are top notch. 1:08 AND YES THE CHARACTER DESIGN FOR ZEDAPH!!!! I love it so much. I love it so so much. The way you've shaded this part. Oh my goodness how have you shaded ALL of this project and colored it in and focused on so much insane detail. You patient person! HOW??? AND the hand movement and how the pen moves for the writing. Just--- again, so smooth. AND THAT PEN FLIP! YAAAS And the expressions Zedaph makes. Just again, so expressive and captures the vibe and reactions to big moon. AHHHH THAT FLYING ANIMATION HOW??? You have too much power. You are too good. How? That movement. That pushback. The way the wings change the way they flutter. Just my goodness! And then the final spin around!!! Let's just talk about the design for Cleo. The body shape is just-- yes. The way you've drawn the outfit. Amazing. The expressions-- so fit Cleo. The way the camera moves to do scene changes are amazing. Just so so well done. AND BDUBS TALKING TO SQUACKERS!!! YES. The hand movements. That FEELS like Bdubs. Capturing his very loud talking, excitable nature. He would talk to all his pets and to himself and do it with very animated hand gestures. AND THEN THE MOVEMENT OF THE ARMS FLINGING OUT AND SQUACKERS FLAPPING AWAY!!! Like, this is so beautiful in every way. And the world crumbling around him. And the fear in his eyes. Took him too long to realize his mistake and now everything's falling apart. CONNECTION LOST???? Poor Tango! His storyline was one of the best. AND THE TNT! The cart of TNT! He's sacrificing himself. He'll let the moon blow him up if it's the way they survive! 1:39 The movement of that cube in the background!!! (Okay, stopping here on my comment because it's lagging in typing speed. I'll create another comment as a reply to this one if you want to further see my excessive fangirling.)
THE WOLF'S MOVEMENT AND FACE!!! And then there's Keralis. Keralis, beloved, just hanging out in space in nothing but underwear. Pffft. I love it. And the tuck in position and then extend. Like, again, so much movement in such a quick time. Ren swimming through the air is spectacular. It feelings like gravity has screwed this world up. Yet Ren and Doc are undeterred. Still working hard. (But that swimming animation. LIKE YES) And Doc grabbing onto Ren. And the bit of running. Like, Ren's face dude-- it's so wholesome. The movement through the mines. Feel ominous and I know the only one we're going to is TFC. Goodness though. The angles you chose for this part ALONE. Again, of professional quality. THE JUMP INTO THE MINECART!!! And it just speeds away!!! And again, the transitions are spectacular. I love the design for Iskall. The glowy eye! And the lime green color! It's just so beautiful! The message board behind him. And then the way he heaves up the shulker box. And then there's Etho. Just chilling. But again, the transitions. So fast and so fitting. And Beef just heading into the mines. Again the expressions. So amazing. It fits Beef. It fits his personality so well. You capture all the hermit's vibes so so well. AND THEN THE CAVE IN!!! Why didn't I see that coming? No. No. No. No. And Boatem and their suits. I love the way you've designed the suits. All of them linked up together, just getting on board. It takes so long to draw one person. I can only imagine the amount of love and effort you put into each frame to get it /just right/. And in the back of the rocket ship there are some tied up shulkers. Just the little things. So much detail in everything, so that people like me can pause and obsess over the unnecessary. The fall into the Boatem hole. One after another. Each fall acting a little different from each hermit. And the color coded helmets. So glad you kept that. So effective even in the void. Again, the designs in Gem and False's outfits. So lovely. And the splice between the two sides of their adventures!!! So much fit in such a little time. Double the workload for you, double the epicness for us. And again I love the way False's hair flows. You've got that DOWN. Okay, and Jevin's tuck and roll? I love that. Far too much. Xisuma and Wels just chilling in the End, playing guitar. Would've loved if they'd stayed there, but poor Cleo had to live there forever alone. And Xisuma's wings popping out. And the start of the animation on one side, then the stop to the other. Showing the contrasts in storylines as Xisuma and Wels break apart. A creative method to this part of the animation for SURE. AGAIN the flow in the helmet tassle (I FOUND THE WORD I THINK!) And then the rocket ship boosting away!! Ah! And Xisuma stepping out into the Nether again. And back to the OG doomguy skin!
WAIT A SECOND!!!! YOU'RE THE ONE WHO DID THE OTHER SIDE ANIMATIC!!!!!!! AHHHH!!!! IT'S YOU!!!! Edit: Energy is so so so much better at the intended speed and somehow is even more amazing than when I first watched it.

Holy wow, as someone who gives long comments regularly I’m really impressed. I wish I could’ve captured that much detail and energy in mine. Also, a tip for any long comments in the future- normally what I do is I write out the comment/essay in Docs or Word or something and then just copy/paste into KZhead. And it’s great when commenting on mobile phones cuz when writing the comment KZhead doesn’t let you pause or restart the video, and with Docs I can switch between apps and focus on one part as much as I want. Oh look at that, another absurdly long comment. I have a problem.
@@bananblob7432 Yeah. I had to do that when commenting on a fanfic. I was writing this one on my computer, so I was able to start and pause as needed, which was quite nice. I capture way too much detail and spend way too much time on comments, but it makes people happy and it’s kinda like a hobby so I don’t mind too much.

This came into my recomendations today. My first impression was me jawdropping. It looks amaizing. When i saw TFC... I felt it, after him passing away, despite me not knowing him very much, it was touching. Seeing him again, in the place he loved to be, in his strip mines
Rewatching this video really hit me hard. My best friend died just over a month ago, and we were both big fans of hermitcraft. I used to talk to him about all the shenanigans happening, we had so much fun watching this season's finale. He was so hyped for season 10 as well, died a few days before the first episode, so I'm watching it on his behalf. This video, the visual, it's beautiful mate, I think I cracked when I saw TFC going down the mineshaft, all happy. Thanks for this animation mate

That was such an exhilarating watch, fantastic job with the animation, Chris! All the action shots were done super nice as well but the relatively restful shot of the tunnels at 1:56 is my favourite. I just love the inclusion of this shot because 1. small break time 2. the perspective change at the start of the shot 3.The speed change to the beat of the music. It's sooo good! Thank you for spending so much time to bring forth a fantastic s8 amv!! o7
I love how the prolonged tunnel sequence also creates a story of TFC digging far from the main activity, but still safely escaping doomsday!

You included TFC perfectly obviously it’s hard to include him into an animation like this as he wasn’t to active during this season and it can be hard to put a story/personality to him But at the start having the moon big behind him but he’s just more focused on playing the game originally rather than looking what’s going on behind him and then nearer to the end where he was in his enormous mine because we all know he is Mining GOAT. I think you added him in perfectly. Also everything else was incredible, gave me goosebumps throughout when I noticed the little details you put in

Some things I didn’t notice in my first 10 watch throughs but that I love: * The lip sync with Cub at 0:45!!! It’s so good and that line is perfect for his paranoia. * The subtitles having different colors for different people/groups * Pearl’s scar - is that from Mumbo’s failed attempt at blowing up the moon killing her?

Well, I wasn't expecting to get teary-eyed over an animation over a Minecraft SMP and yet, here I am. Due to limited time I can't keep up with every Hermit, but holy crap did you capture the spirit of the season ending perfectly. That mix of sadness, hope, freedom, desperation, and all around fun. Absolutely spot on. Thank you for the memories. And,... I guess, the tears in my eyes. Wonderful work.
