  • I'm starting my 51st season of Traditional Bowhunting and my longest kill shot was 19 yards while my closest shot was 3 yds with an average of 10-12 yards. You are spot on! Using a Traditional Bow will make you a better Hunter!

  • I know you're talking about traditional archery but it still refreshing to me to hear someone speak about shooting animals close instead of how far they can shoot! Seems in the modern archery world distance and angles aren't a limiting factor. Enjoy your videos!

    • Glad you enjoyed it! Yep bowhunting is about getting close

      @tradbowpodcast@tradbowpodcast6 ай бұрын
  • Excellent video with sound advice. This aligns perfectly with my concept of "close enough to kill". First, one determines the range at which one can consistently shoot "close enough to kill", under a stressful hunting situation, and then one works on their hunting skills to allow them to get within that range - "close enough to kill". Yes, even the stalking bowhunter can develop hunting skills that allow them to consistently get "close enough to kill". That philosophy worked well for me for five decades of hunting with a longbow; on multiple hundreds of big game animals, on six continents; and countless small game. Some additional skill-set advice I'd add is, (1) learn to shoot from multiple body positions (you will rarely get a shot at big game that allows you to assume a perfect 'target stance'), (2) learn to shoot moving targets that are within your kill zone and, (3) learn to shoot both when you have to hold your draw for several seconds and when you have to take your shot very quickly. One more piece of advice, always use enough arrow; an arrow that maximizes the potential for achieving a lethal hit when your shot, for whatever reason, turns out to be less than perfect - a Plan B arrow.. Nowadays, I see so much bragging about how far some bowhunter shot their animal. Bowhunting, with either a traditional bow or a compound bow, is a close-range sport. It's about hunting skill, not shooting skill. No arrow - NO ARROW, not even from the fastest of crossbows - is fast enough to overcome an animal's reaction time; and that situation gets worse as the shooting distance increases. At longer shooting ranges an animal can merely take a leisurely step and drastically alter the arrow's placement on the intended target. When shooting at a big game animal no bowhunter can guarantee where his arrow will hit - because the animal gets a vote. The animal can change position before the arrow arrives on target. Please, if you want to shoot your game at long range, just get a rifle. Hunt close, shoot close, and learn those additional skills - and use those Plan B arrows. Good hunting, my friends.

  • To be good at archery, is to have consistent form. the hand pressure in same spot, the string alignment the same, the anchor point, the draw length all have to be the same for each and every shot, then once you've mastered your form, then you have to aim, compensating for gravity's effect on your arrow at different yardages. Also all your arrows have to be the same. This info is for new shooters . Good Archers already know this, that's why they hit what there aiming at. So having said this , the guy in this traditional bowhunting video, knows what he's talking about.

  • I use to be a traditional bow hunter. I suffered a severe injury in 2001 that left me disabled. I contracted a really bad nerve disorder called Reflex Symptomatic Dystrophy (RSD) aka (CRPS) from the trauma. It seems they change the name of it every 10 years or so, and that’s just because they still don’t fully understand it. It has really done a number on my entire nervous system, but mainly affected my dominant left arm, and then spread to my dominant left leg. I really really miss it!!

  • I'm 53 and have been bow hunting since I was 18. I've killed a lot of animals with a Long Bow, a compound, and a cross bow. My longest was 41 yards with the compound on a deer that a buddy hit and I got a follow up shot and drilled it. Oddly enough all the shots I've had with the cross bow have been the closest. All on drives and well under 10 yards, and absolutely miserable trying to find and make that happen with a cheap cross bow scope. Everything else was 10-20 yards. I really don't like taking over a 20 yard shot with any of these weapons. I don't trim shooting lines and at low light shooting times it's difficult to see branches and sticks and stuff. To the point of this video I have not had a problem getting 12 yard shots on Deer and Elk. With my 45# long bow 20 yards is my max and I plan on and set up for 10 yards. Out of a tree stand 6 yards is about my minimum. I can't really get bent over well enough for anything closer than that with the long bow. Ohh and all my cross bow kills were from the ground. I don't know what it is about that thing, but when I'm in the woods with it it's a killing machine. It's strictly for putting meat in the freezer. It's a Barnett 460. I enjoy the long bow more than anything. Take care.

I make up for it by using tactics and scouting to find places where I'll be at best advantage. The challenge is that will change from Sept through to Nov as the snow flies and I'm still figuring that part out. It seems to change year to year up here in Alberta too, so never a dull moment.

  • I would recommend practicing at distances right up to 30-40 yards for the reason below: I once went hunting with a buddy who only "winged" a goat and from what I could see it wouldn't survive, but suffer a slow death having a badly injured leg. I immediately took up the chase and followed the group for about a mile and as I began to tire the lagging, injured goat was about to disappear over a ridge into deep bush and I knew I had to at least try at a distance of about 35-40 yards. Muscle memory kicked in and even though I was exhausted the arrow flew straight to the heart on a rear flanking shot behind the ribs and it dropped instantly. Call it "luck" but the practice at longer distances trains your eye for such a shot as these.

I never took my bow out for the first four years because I couldn't get accurate at 20-40 yards. Eventually I took out my compound because I just really wanted to use an arrow. I tried to spot and stalk and walked up to within 10 yards on over 20 deer that day. The next year I set up in a tree and first day had 7 deer within 12 yards. I'm no longer afraid to take out my trad bows. I just didn't realize I'd get that close. Be patient and slow, and play the wind, and you WILL walk up on them. Or they will walk to you.

  • yeah, the speed of an arrow has a lot more to do with the range than the power of the arrow. even if the arrow has all the power it needs, a fast trad bow at 200fps still gives plenty of time for that animal to move before the arrow gets there. at 30 yards, youre maxed out on that range and thats considered a long shot for time of arrow travel. most ppl dont think about that and only think about how much power the arrow has at 50 yards. "my bow slaps at 50 yards"....yeah but that animal is 6 feet futher to the left or right before the arrow gets there. not a good way to make accurate shots

  • I picked up traditional bow 3 years ago because I was getting board with compound. I got good up to 28 yards thinking I needed to. Most shots taken with compound were 20 yards and up. I have gotten consistent at 20 yards. I am looking forward to taking one with traditional. Getting close to a whitetail is going to be a tough to do. Especially a big buck.

    • Welcome to the world of traditional bowhunting. The limitations of the trad bow will teach you to be a better hunter and to get close to deer including big bucks. I've killed close to 200 big game animals and my average shot distance is about 9 or 10 yards.

    • @@tradbowpodcast how do you control your scent?. I use the scent washes and the spray with boiled pine and cedar needles. It's got me closer but they can still wind me sometimes. Or get hesitant when the get down wind. I hunt 20 feet off the ground. That helps. I have heard of some hunting only 12 or less and getting close range. I feel I would be busted by my scent at that range.

  • I've shot competitive archery and bow hunted , most of my life. having said that , its real simple. the farther you are back from your target , the more your mistake in form and yardage are magnified. Its a triangular effect. So you have to determine what yardage you can consistently, with your ability to keep all your shots in the kill zone. On a deer, maybe the size of a paper plate, right behind the shoulder area, but not too high.

  • All good advice. 2 things. I use a 3 arrow quiver. There is no need for all those arrows on a hunt. 1 for the kill. 1 as a backup. 1 field point for a practice tree stand shot. Second is that nearly 45 degree cant of his bow. This is going to be detrimental for new shooters. Keep your bow close to vertical as you can. You will increase your accuracy. That extreme cant is a modern American phenomenon. It wasn’t done in the past or in ancient times. Only barely enough to keep that arrow on your knuckle

    @user-gr7dz8vg1d@user-gr7dz8vg1d3 ай бұрын
    • Maybe for target archery. In bowhunting canting a bow is important as it let's me get low to the ground, get the limbs out of the way when shooting down out of trees and gets the riser out of my way in my view. And I don't need any cant to keep the arrow on my knucke. I do it for the reasons above. And if I only carried 2 broadheads I'd go hungry.

  • Just make sure the arrow is around the spine you need and the minimum weight an arrow should be for hunting and have arrows that are sharp and legal for your state and this will help you with taking down a deer. One person my brother knew used the wrong type of arrow, this one model of Muzzy 100 or 125 grain Trocar with a lower poundage 35 pound compound. The Muzzy Trocar model has a part that connects the arrow blades or ferule that sticks out causing the broadhead to stick and they might have even had the mistake of using the compound version of the model not the bow one so they might have had more with the back thread part, some of the connection part is not made for a thinner arrow but a thicker bolt.
