Fr. Mike on Evangelization: Telling the Story of God’s Love

Fr. Mike speaks about evangelization, new media, and telling the story of God’s love at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia. Addressing future pastors, he tells them “the heart of your formation is to become a dad” to your parishioners. He encourages them to use the same motto they use at the Newman Center of the University of Minnesota, Duluth, where he serves as campus minister. The motto he shares with students there is “See a need, fill a need.”
In other words, you don’t have to wait for permission to share the gospel, to be charitable, or to do good.
Evangelization in the new world is at its heart no different than it’s always been. As Pope St. Paul VI shared in Evangelii Nuntiandi, if you’re baptized, you’ve been anointed to spread the gospel. And as Christ says when commissioning the apostles:
“You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samar′ia and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
Christ is saying it’s our job to continue his mission.
But it’s not all about going out. We also need to go in, to look inward. Before we go out to evangelize, we need to invite Christ into our hearts.
What does it mean to know him? And what does all of this have to do with new media? It’s all connected because of one word: story. Evangelization is about telling the story of God’s love as you have experienced it, and new media is just a new medium for spreading that centuries-old message, the kerygma.
How do you become a Catholic speaker? “Well, you get baptized and then you start talking” Fr. Mike says.
Opportunities will come, but your first yes has to be to Christ. And the opportunities don’t have to be to speak to thousands of people thousands of miles away. Saying yes to Christ means being willing to talk about him to one person one block or one house away, or just to the person in front of you. Just as it starts with a personal encounter with Christ, the next step is to tell the story of God’s love for you to one person.
So how do we evangelize with new media? We don’t if we aren’t willing to do it without new media.
Also, getting into new media requires more than a person sitting in his living room sharing his opinion on something. It requires an entire Church community, and you. The speaker speaks, the team puts everything together, but the most important piece is the person who shares the video, program, podcast, or article with someone they know and love.
At the end of the talk, Fr. Mike answers questions about what role social media should play in a seminarian’s formation, and a pastor’s mission, among other questions.

  • Hello from Australia! In Australia I have only ever seen Church of England/ Anglican Churches that have the congregation facing each other across the aisle. I have only recently found Father Mike and find his talks so helpful. Born and Baptised Roman Catholic but hovered for too long and I recently asked God to show me how to be humble and to be with me because I want to be with Him . I need so much help and I know only God can help me, but I thank Him for Father Mike.

    • Why does the Trinity not appear in the Bible?peace.//.

      @lufhopespeacefully2037@lufhopespeacefully20377 ай бұрын
    • @@lufhopespeacefully2037 The Holy Trinity does appear in the Bible, but it is not labeled as such. In the Book of Genesis, God is spoken of as "We", "Us", and "Our". For example, "Then God said: 'Let us make Man in our image, after our likeness...' ". This seems to imply a paradox, or mistake; though it happens too often in this book to be an error. More likely, it was written exactly as God intended. The angels who visited with Abraham, and later rescued Lot and his household before destroying Sodom and Gomorrah, were spoken of as though they were bearing God's presence in a special way. There were three of them. Later, one remained with Abraham on the mountain while the other two went down to the towns. The angel on the mountain spoke with the authority of God, as did the other two upon reaching Sodom. Jesus stated in the Bible that "I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me. I and the Father are one". He also explained, after His resurrection, that He will ask the Father to send the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles; which John the Baptist spoke of in regards to Jesus: "He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit, and fire". John, who had authority to baptise before Jesus' ministry, did not have authority to call down the Holy Spirit. It would seem from these parts of the Bible, that Jesus and God are one being, and that the Holy Spirit, rather than an angel or servant, is equal to them. The only way for that to be possible, is for the Holy Spirit to also be one with God and the Son. One being, three distinct persons; as the Catholic Church teaches. A Catholic theologian could explain it much better. May God bless you. 🙏

Do you want to know what the single biggest detriment as to whether a child will keep to the faith when they reach adulthood? If the father actively lives his faith. Mothers are important as well, but it seems that if the father is the one getting everyone out of bed and dressed for church, those children end up sticking to the faith.

    • @@Wolfschanzeful I can back that. I was raised Catholic by my grandmother. The only father I ever had was the most high however the private middle school next to our church turned me to Satan. No one to guide me and at that age and I was too young to notice signs or even feel anything with a nonreligious mother on top. Now that I'm 30 and after a very very long life, full of regret and pain, me being the last alive I've learned I had st. Michael with me this whole time. He's been in combat with Satan inside me forever. Ive had everything anyone could ever want and everything everyone would not want. I can tell you if I had the proper guidance I would have saved 1000 lives by now. Luckily my path was already written and from what I've become after walking through true fire for what seems like an eternity, I am stronger then any influence from Lucifer. If one has a sour taste of religion then they need to learn forgiveness, redemption, empathy and unconditional love. It takes the smallest nudge to commit the most horrendous crimes and those are EASILY committed without Jesus in your life and also without guidance. If I had a father that was Catholic I can tell you I would be equally as strong however without a life of sin, pain, and harming of others. God bless!!
