I dont think ive ever seen so much white on a leek before! Amazing 😍
Lol, I'm watching this video with the volume off and the subtitles on but just watching you pour and mix the soil instead of reading the subtitles. With the camera angle, I can't help but focus on your dog and imagining what your dog is thinking: "Are we gonna dig? Can I dig now? I see you digging in the dirt. Do I get a chance to dig in the dirt too?" Then finally your dog looks down away from the wheelbarrow and with sad eyes seems to be thinking: "You get to dig in the dirt and I have to just stand here and watch you while I don't even get a piece of dirt to dig". Poor baby. As far as the content of what you are showing us in how to grow Leeks in a pot, you give exactly the information I have been looking for. THANK YOU! I had trouble finding a way to properly support my Leeks as they grew, so I thought of using a plastic bottle to hold up my Leek, but wanted to check and see what experienced growers are doing to support their Leeks as they grow. Perfect :)
what a lovely Molly :) shes watching you with love.
I have never had great success growing leeks, HGV--- but definitely attempting again this season, and will be trying your method!! THANK YOU SIR!
I've accidentally bought some v young leek plants today, thinking they were spring onions. So I will definitely use this video for my growing this yr!
Hope it works out Ruth.
Thank you so much for posting this, I’m just planting some leeks in a container and I love how you have shown me all the steps. And Molly is just so lovely!😀
I’ve just done my first harvest of leek (used to live in the tropics and last year moved to a temperate climate where I can now grow these,) and hardly have any white shank! Didn’t blanch them, did I? 😆 Well, now I know what I need to do with the next lot, this autumn! Thank you for this video, showing me how these are to be grown!
I reckon Wally the dog knows a thing or two about gardening he’s very attentive.
I had a crack at growing leeks before and they were pathetic, after watching your video I think I got restored confidence to try again, thank you for a lovely video , to you and Molly .👍
Mine too! But now I know what to do!
Aw ...The patience of a dog. Great videos, Sir. 👍
Molly looks like a great helper. Sweet girl. 🥰
If I was to use a 20 gallon pot I wonder if I would be able to grow leeks in it without having to do all of this? Mind you this is down right ingenious. I mean really really good idea. Bravo.
Not only are you an amazing gardener, your film making skills are pretty impressive too.Love to Moll
Thanks Joan. HGV
To all those cooks who hate using leeks because of the sand which gets in the stem, between the leaves. Chop the leeks or slice them to the size you need, toss them into sieve and run water over them or if extra dirty, into a pail or basin of water and swish to your hearts' content. The leaves will all separate and the sand or dirt will sink to the bottom. Then pour the leaks into a strainer or sieve. Dump the mud out and repeat if necessary. Voila! clean and 'easy peezy'. No work to that at all! Enjoy all!
Instead of chopping first and then washing them and stripping away the nutrients, *simply remove the stalks and separate each leaf and wash them*
Rather than pouring the leaks into a strainer. Lift them out of the water with your hands or a slotted spoon or smaller strainer and place them into a strainer. You'll avoid disturbing the sand in the pail that way.
Thanks for these tips!
nice clay soil . we have that in zone 9 a US. those leeks are great, lots of veggie meat and short on the crazy hair looking leaves and I see exactly what I did wrong! loved the video and Miss Molly! She is lovely
You are so smart! I've been gardening for many, many years and in many U.S. states, and now do most of my growing in pots in Austin, TX. I simply rejoice in all the new ideas I have gotten from you. Very exciting. You are so productive. Thank you and Molly for sharing your videos. Please continue.
Thanks for such a nice comment. Happy gardening. HGV
What a well behaved dog, and great informative video. ❤ Thank you for sharing. I'm in the UK and I'm looking for veg that I can grow indoors, I've chosen Cabbage 🥬 and Leeks so far, so this video has been really great.
I've never tried growing leaks. After watching your video, it's going on my planting list. Thanks for all your info on gardening.
I'm growing them from seeds. I've got a lot of spare time now.
You are amazing. So glad you share online. I've allsorts in containers this year, thanks to yourself. Love to the beautiful Molly x
fantastic! Thank you for not adding music :) the mole soil idea is a win-win.
He's such a sweet dog. Just stands around watching waiting for potato to snack on.
Excellent helpful video thank you. Planted my leeks in our raised bed yesterday , thinking I’ve done it wrong. Will wait to use your method next year , ingenious indeed thank you
Great tips, thanks! Without these secrets a beginner might be disheartened by his failures. Leeks and carrots are among my favourite vegs and I would try to grow them first. Your method for carrots is very ingenious too. I will study carefully every one of your videos.
I love way you explain everything from start to finish very thorough I love the way you talk and miss molly
What happened to Molly?
@@billiefrye1736 she passed away a while ago 😪 love little collie
you need to get another sweet Molly!
Smart! I just found the perfect use for all those toilet paper roll cores!
Thank you for sharing your technique on growing leeks in a pot!
Your welcome. HGV
An amazing idea with the plastic bottles and the felt!
Very useful info!! I shall be using this technique for my stab at leeks this year. (My first time growing them) Thanks for creating these vids. They are very fun to watch. Cheers from Indiana, USA.
“Find my watering can” I must have said that in my head 40 times in the last 2 days. video took me an hour to find this quality info. 👍🏻
Ingenious, clever, original, and inventive. Thanks for sharing.
Just found you. So incredibly interesting. I cant wait to try my leeks.look forward to watching more videos from you
Oh my golly gosh! What an absolutely fantastic idea. I have some leek seedlings that I was about to plant out next weekend and this how i am going to do it! Thank you so much.
Your videos have taught me so much that I can't wait to start.
great job !! great video !! great information on leek growing !! thanks for sharing !! all the best and happy gardening !!
As a relatively new allotment gardener, I think I am going to give this a try on my plot for next year..
Absolutely ingenious - great technique. Thanks for sharing.
Not exactly sure what leeks are, but I want to grow them now! lol My 'green thumbs' are getting itchy after watching all these gardening videos...hahaha Right now I've got red, yellow and green bell peppers, tomatoes, spinach, scallions, sweet onions, kale, peas, 2 types of basil, lemon thyme, raddish, carrots and parsley growing in pots. I doubt that I will get any carrots...never had any luck with them, but the tops are so pretty that I grow them anyways. I love being able to cut fresh, home grown herbs to use whilst cooking. I just love playing in the dirt, experimenting with different vegetables. It's like my version of going to church...I feel closer to Nature whilst gardening. Thanks for sharing. I am really enjoying your videos! Peace and well wishes from Florida. =D

Just think of a jumbo green onion that’s a bit milder. Great for soups.
Great tips thankyou, you have beautiful veggies! your helper is very cute, glad she helps for tasty homegrown goodies.
i absolutely love watching both you and Molly go through container planting. So helpful for me at this time as I cannot go to my allotment and am planting my seedlings in pots. I am new to gardening ( only 6 months since I got my allotment). Thank you for all the valuable tips- love the plastic containers and the how to reuse spent compost !!!!!! Amazing!!!
Hello Poornima. Hope you get back on the Allotment before the growing season is over. HGV
I just planted a lot of leeks yesterday and planting more today!!
I have got to try this! You got some amazing results! Very clever idea! Brilliant video!
Thanks for the video. I struggle to grow leeks, so I'm keen to give this a go :)
Three cheers for you! This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you very much. Very informative, step by step and I enjoyed your humour. Will do my leeks your way this coming spring. Have a great winter. 👌👍
Nice trick with the leeks! Thank you so much for sharing; your videos are so informative and I really enjoy them. Needless to say, your Molly girl is a star! I love her!🙏💌🌱 grandma in WA state

I love your channel....I’m from USA Washington State. I enjoy watching you grow veggies .
I love your videos and your dog is adorable!!
An experiment that has worked beautifully for you! I did enjoy the video and you gave me an idea on how to incorporate your methods into my own. Thanks James! Brent
What a great way to grow leeks. they should be grit free as well doing it your way. Thanks.
Ingenious! GREAT video!
Thank you from N. Carolina! We love potato and leek soup in our house.

Great idea . I'll try this myself .
VERY good tip. Thanks. I will be using water pipe to test.
B rilliant content from you sir!
so doing this this year, those pots are great and 6 for 99p from morrisons bargain you normally find them stacked under the fresh flower stall
Thanks for the info, but your dog I can tell is smart as heck, I can tell he's very attentive to what you doing...
Thx for the tips. It helps a lot
Wow, cool idea, going to try this.
Your a fantastic teacher.Thank you
Thank you! 😃
Great info .
Your homemade innovations are so useful, I'll be using this one with my Morrisons flower buckets. I've already used the pre-germinated parsnip & table leg trick (used a wooden rolling pin). Thanks for sharing.
Hello Phillip. Just sown my Parsnips in the raised bed and must have about 50 pots with something growing in them. Good luck with all your veg. HGV
Had no good luck growing leeks. Betcha Molly could teach me a thing or two. Good video, thanks.
Excellent info! Thanks
Subbed... this is great! i just discovered leeks and they are soooo expensive and gross from the grocery.
New subbie here. Have you published a book about container gardening? If not, I think you should. I would definitely buy it. Thanks for your informative video's.
Brilliant videos
cracking stuff lad!
Best soil to use! Grew up using it before taking care of the moles 😆😬
Nice video.
To aramintypotter and all others who hate using leeks because of the sand which gets in the stem, between the leaves. Glad it was helpful!
Excellent.
Super idea😁
Hi HGV! I was wondering where you get your soil sifter? love your videos!
Brilliant!
U are amazing ... New subbie
ridge method plant on top of mounds in 3 inch wide holes 6 inches deep just drop leek in hole and water in this is the method i was learnt on an organic veg farm works great on wetter ground
we use a wooden broken spade handle the handle on top makes it easy to push into ground and do a 360 movement to strengthen hole walls this a a quick and tried and tested method to make your holes
Sounds good to me. HGV
Lovely dog.
Brilliant!!
My Grandfather used copper tubing for plumbing over his his leeks and green onions. My father uses PVC tubing, it is cheaper than copper. Just an Old Timers Trick
Your Grandfather was smart! Trace amounts of copper which are chipped off into the soil when he hammered that tube into rocks n stones, gave the soil back small amounts of copper which are good for plants and humans!
Thanks for posting this video, we have those pots and know where there are mole hills, looking forward to a Geordie favourite, leek pudding
This might come in handy Dave: kzhead.info/sun/qJdwYr1qfJ2ufq8/bejne.html
@@HomeGrownVeg Thanks Jim, i have watched your 4 leek pot and the 10 leek pot and it looked like the 10 leeks had a heavier yield, we might do our own comparison this year, cheers Dave
Very very nice
Do you have a video on how to grow rhubarb? Love making rhubarb and coconut cake, to die for!
SUPER PERFEKT DANKE 👏 👏 👏
Top tip
Rinse the grit out of the bottoms by quartering them from the base... but not all of the way up so you keep them together. Easy to use method that works excellent for grilled leeks, which I have all the time!
There in not much chance of grit getting into the leek. The leaf joints are several inches above the soil level and about twelve inches above soil level at time of harvest. I still give them a good wash before cooking them though, 'just in case'. HGV
Really helpful thank you, when can I start to grow my Musselburgh leeks indoors? (I'm in the UK) eager to start planting veg.
Hello John. Leeks and Onions can be started indoors as soon as January / February here in the UK. They will need some warmth to germinate and once through they will need light. I like to 'get Christmas done' (to much politics) then start to sow seeds. HGV
Wow! Beauties! I'm going to make that wind break. But I'd like to give the middle a shot w a leek making it 5 leeks in the pot.
Hello Corrado . I have managed to grow 10 leeks in one of these small buckets so 5 should be OK. Check this Out: kzhead.info/sun/f8huZ9d6aJ-Maa8/bejne.html
Great technique, Wonder if it helps repel onion leaf miner, I lost a big portion of my leeks last year to the leaf miner.
Hello Bernard. No leaf miner at HGV. Fingers crossed.
I bet leeks grown this way are much cleaner too! I seldom buy leeks because it's such a pain to wash all the grit out of the leaves. I've never grown leeks before, I'll look them up in our county planting calendar - I think they're a winter crop here in California. Thanks for the vid!
Hello Araminty. I usually sow my Leeks in in spring, transplant them in summer and grow them through summer and autumn to harvest in winter. HGV
aramintypotter I'm in fresno. I plant leek seed in unheated greenhouse in January. When they are big enough to handle, I transplant 6 inches deep in raised beds. ( usually in end of march to middle of April. They start harvesting in late July as baby leeks and harvest as needed until march of next year. In that second April they will go to seed. I let the 2 best shaped leaf structure with biggest shank cross pollinate and collect seed in august. You can harvest leeks anytime they are large enough to eat through to when they go to seed. I hope this helps
Hello Shannon. When you used the word 'shank' in your comment that confirmed to me, you know your leeks. Thanks for commenting, it's all good stuff. HGV
love your video's. ...please Can you make a video on planting strawberries, blueberries and raspberries in containers..Thank you
One of the reasons I grow stuff in buckets is because my garden is not so big. If I had more room I would grow a few fruit bushes but I haven't. Thanks for the comment. HGV
Home Grown Veg I think growing in containers is a fabulous idea. we rent a property but we don't know how long will stay there..That's why I prefer growing in containers. ..
Leeks are delicious mild and zingy onion flavor. I lived in Florida and don't know if I can grow them here
+Home Grown Veg great video im going to try it now do you ever use nettles that have brewed in water to feed them?. Stinks to high heaven but its helped a lot of things in my garden grow well
Hello Jack. It's probably 'good stuff' but the smell is a 'no no' so close to the house. HGV
Home Grown Veg definately not good stuff do you grow carrots never had any luck myself
This is something I really want to try.
Hi thanks to your videos I planted veg 3 years ago, however due to health and bereavement last year I planted nothing, I now have all my garden and pots cleared ready to plant. Where are you baised, I am in Co Durham and want to know what and when I can start to plant as the 2 years I planted I did it in may and april. Hoping to grow potatoes "belle" from the supermarket lovely potatoes, cherry tomatoes, carrots, onions, leeks, strawberries and want to try peppers Thanks Lynda
I'm just across country from you. Take a chance in March, take less of a chance in April, May should be safe. Jim.
SUPERB "How To" Video... A couple of questions Sir. Sorry, I have "Yankee Ears" here; in the beginning of the video, are you saying and sifting "Mole Hills" or "Morels"; can't quite hear it clearly. Also, do you think it would "hurt" the growth of the leeks if you trim off the overspill of the green tops as they grow? I was thinking that since the tops are not desirable; just trim them off which might allow more nutrition to the desired "white" area and just throw in the compost pile as fresh nitrogen greens. I will try doing this with one pot of your method as an experiment to see this coming spring [March 2019 here in the SW Desert of the States]. Thank You.
This video should explain everything. HGV kzhead.info/sun/g7lwdrqdaYKFgaM/bejne.html
