He wants more autonomy, he’d rather die than keep having to rely on others (we are both self made from nothing so I get him), and while self driving cars have far less accident rates, I think he’d rather die than continue having to beg my mom and family for help . Ideally I’d rather get him and my family robots each :)

What's in it for Tesla shareholders? Don't think about Elon Musk, he already cashed out his billions. Customers don't pay extra for riding in a Tesla robotaxi. But if they should die in an accident the liability is sky-is-the-limit. How much did Tesla pay for the Google engineer, who died in a Tesla Mode X on autopilot? Perhaps a hundred million if not more?
These thoughts are exactly what impedes innovation. Of course, no one should put all their money betting on success of Tesla. Very risk-averse investor should consider bond not equity.
