10 Hair Care Myths You Should Stop Believing

Almost all of us are ready to spend a bunch of money or follow any advice to make our hair healthy and shiny. Let’s bust the most popular hair care right now!
Some say, ‘Don’t wash it every day or it will get greasy faster.’ When you try it, you still have oily hair the very next day. The others say, ‘You need to use mayo for the hair volume.’ But no matter how many jars you have put on your head, the hair is still flat as it used to be.
TIMESTAMPS

SUMMARY
- Hair grows from the roots and not from the ends. The average speed of hair growth is a half an inch (1 cm) per month. So, if you cut your hair every month, it will just keep the same length or even become shorter.
- If you have short hair that dries in a few minutes, then probably you don’t need to use a blow dryer. However, if your hair is long, it is on the contrary to the belief preferable to blow dry.
- If you wash your hair with the same shampoo for a long time, your hair won’t get dirty faster or grow slower. Many factors can influence this but not “the addiction” of your hair to any particular brand.
- Dandruff occurs in people with an oily scalp. So, when this problem appears, stop using hair oil, which, contrary to your expectations, only worsens the situation.
- Overly frequent combing distributes the skin oil along the hair, and it gets dirty much faster. However, combing doesn’t affect the hair health and can even do much harm by causing split ends and breakage.
- The thickness of the hair, as well as the number of hair follicles, is a genetic trait so the quality of care cannot affect it in any way.
- Frequent or rare washing doesn’t affect how fast your hair will get dirty. However, properly selected care can adjust the work of the sebaceous glands, and your hair will get dirty more slowly.
- Since the quantity of hair for each person doesn’t depend either on care or proper nutrition, several hairs cannot grow instead of one. However, don’t tear out gray hairs because you can damage the follicle or cause an ingrown hair.
- Hair consists of dead tissue, neither cold nor hot water can affect the cuticle’s condition.
- The amount of shampoo may vary with hair length and density. A dollop the size of a quarter is usually enough - too much lather can dry the scalp. If you get a full, rich lather on the first wash, you don’t need to repeat the shampooing.

      @jennasharma285@jennasharma2856 жыл бұрын
    • Jenna Gaming it might just be dry scalp, but dandruff can be caused by an overly dry or overly oily scalp. Dry scalp can be cured by rehydrating your scalp like you're doing with the coconut oil but most of the time dandruff has to be treated medically. That's why there are certain types of shampoo like selsun blue and head and shoulders to treat dandruff.

    • Hi I am a hair stylist and I would like to say that washing in cold water is better for longevity of color, can help refuse hair loss (hot water causes cuticles and pore to open up causing more hair to fall out), and it closes the cuticle down (locking oils from conditioner in) so I recommend washing in warm water and rinsing In cool water to lock cuticle. But cold water is not bad for hair at all! It’s actually better for it!

  • Myth #2 is true actually. You should always rinse your hair with cool water to clove the cuticles and make it shiny, never with warm or hot water. Hair is made out of Keratin which is a protein and we all know, proteins will get destroyed at temperatures over 40°C. Keratin even faster. (Thats also why high fever over 39° is so dangerous btw.). Oh and to Myth #10 at the beginning, cutting your hair won't make your hair grow faster yea but it will definitely make your hair longer. It prevents split ends and split ends cause your hair to break off (and so making it shorter). Your haie grows from the roots but the ends keep breaking off so...cutting your hair will make it grow longer (and it seems to grow faster)

    • No research ( in vitro and statistics with control groups) has found that washing affected the oil production of sebaceous gland. So maybe it’s just that your hormonal balance has changed which is the main factor with genetic predisposition of oil production, thickness and growth of the hair.

    • A dollop of shampoo might be enough for a shaved head, but if your hair is longer than a few inches it'll be difficult to saturate the entire scalp with shampoo with only that much. And the thicker your hair is the more you need. Shampoo only goes on the scalp though unless you need to clean gross stuff from the lengths. Conditioner though.... My hair is to my hips so I go through conditioner super fast. Lucky for me I only need to wash once a week unless I get something gross stuck in my hair.

I had dandruff a few months ago, and that was because my scalp was dry,which is why it was so itchy also. Hair oils did work. Using a hair dryer DOES damage hair! And dries scalp! Not saying you shouldn't ever use it if your in a hurry and your hair needs to be dryed within a few minutes. Do us all a favor and stop speaking falsehoods. Next thing you know your gonna say that drinking water lights your eyebrows on fire.

Half of these myths have truth to them for people with curly hair and whose hair isn't European based. • I am a hair stylist and would just like to clarify that dry scalp and actual dandruff are very different things. A dry scalp is just dry skin and can flake similarly to dandruff. So oil would help with that. But dandruff is actually caused by a fungus and oil would not help get rid of that. You would need an anti dandruff shampoo. (:

      @danimarie9372@danimarie93724 жыл бұрын
    • Almera Cataag hi I’m a hair stylist. if you have a dry scalp, that is flakey, oil can help. If you have actual dandruff, that is caused by a fungus and can only go away with an anti dandruff shampoo. Use an anti dandruff shampoo and see if that clears up the flakes. If it doesn’t, that means you probably didn’t have dandruff, you must have dry skin. And in that case use coconut oil. Add some tea tree essential oil as well and apply to the scalp.

  • That isn't true! You NEED to cut your hair often or it won't grow! If you have split ends they will start to get bigger, and work their way up the hair. Eventually they will break off leaving you with short damaged hair. So, if you cut them it seems that your hair grows faster, but it doesn't have a split end to break it. Hope this helps! X

    @carmenjones5025@carmenjones50256 жыл бұрын
    • Carmen Smart Not really. Your hair will still grow because hair grows from the scalp. Anything you do to the ends, is irrelevant. YES you should get your hair cut often to take off dead ends because it'll keep splitting up and up, but it doesn't affect the growth of the hair JUST the length.

    • Heat/alkaline chemicals open the cuticle and cold/acidic chemicals close it. Hair doesn't grow faster by cutting it but it does appear fuller making the illusion of it being longer, plus split ends and breakage can shorten the hair so regular trims are important when growing out the hair

    • The only way to make your hair thicker is by getting a transplant where hair follicles from another part of your body is implanted into your scalp. But you can keep your hair from thinning by using minimal heat, minimal chemicals, brushing your hair everyday to disperse your natural oil, and avoiding wearing your hair up a lot. Also getting regular trims will keep your ends looking fuller :)
