Alain de Botton | A Therapeutic Journey - Lessons from the School of Life
The bestselling author of The School of Life joins us live with an unmissable guide to mental health.
In the world of contemporary philosophy, Alain de Botton occupies a unique place: he is dedicated not to the vagaries of metaphysics but to the practical wisdom we need to live well. He transmutes the wisdom of high art, philosophy and literature - from Schopenhauer to Proust - into witty and humane aperçus that offer consolation and empathy through the trials and tribulations of the everyday.
Now, following his worldwide blockbuster book The School of Life, he joined How To Academy to take us on a mental health journey from crisis to recuperation. He explores the moments we realise we cannot cope; the acts of self-care and therapy in which we find respite, and the days we finally reclaim a sense of stability.
This talk is about getting unwell. About losing direction and hope. About imagining that we have let ourselves and everyone down. And also a talk about getting better, regaining the thread, rediscovering meaning and finding a way back to connection and joy.
Whether you’ve suffered a relationship breakdown, a career setback, anxiety in the everyday, this is a practical guide that will help you find reasons for hope.
what a mature, balanced, considered lecture - thanks
Alain is the best living philosopher! I love him!!!!
I fall in love with this man every time he opens his mouth. He is just so so good from any point of view you look. Funny, exceptionally intelligent, very articulate and most of all - super balanced human being. I would make him ruler of the universe, and I am not joking
Good to know I'm not the only one who feels that way! That level of intelligence = 🫠😍
love this so much. huge fan and admirer of alain de boton. so calming
I love Alain”s teaching!!❤
Love this video. Very insightful ❤🍀✨
Listening is 'empathy in action'. Something I've learned.
I feel extremely lucky to be there bathing in his presence. Listening him was such a soothing experience. Can't wait to read his signed copy of his new book. A therapeutic Journey. looking forward to listen him agian in the future. Thanks to How to Academy Mindset to make it possible.
were you there in that auditorium? wow
@@realbobbyaxel yeahhh!!! I was there. It was held at Emmanuel Centre near Westminster abbey. One thing I found appealing was his modesty - such a charismatic display of simplicity.
@@Pratikphago Happy For You. I am a fan of his but I have never been lucky enough to see him. I wish I can see him in the future.
By the way would you mind sharing... What was it like to go to that auditorium. How were the people like. What was the vibe. How did you guys get to know about the event, etc.
@@realbobbyaxel Thank you so much with all my heart! You must see him next time. To tell you I had no clue which topic he was going to venture into, honestly. I was just too excited to see him and be there, but it went beyond my anticipation. He mostly talk about childhood, parenthood and trauma etc etc.. He was witty and made funny remarks🤗 I had googled it a couple months earlier and bought ticket. Hope I’ll see you in his next talk.
What Alain talks about here in such a convincing way is a wonderful key to a less troubled, more flexible and more enlightened life. The world would be so different if this was knowledge more generally 'out there' and if we all understood the significance of challenging the rigid distortions, denials and unwritten rules our childhood left us with!
So many people say they are 'easy going'...I think to myself more like 'deluded' 😂
The complexity of the human condition is utterly big.. We even have no capacity to begin to understand ourselves! Its both scary and reassuring
Deepest gratitude for your dedication to mental health. I’ve found your teachings to be invaluable. I will buy your book and spread the words. Tess, LPCC in New Mexico, US
such an amazing lecture! thank you❤
Allain, as usual, a great pleasure to listen to you (I am partially sighted and cannot read now). If you ever need anothe "guinea pig" I have plenty to discuss with you ref my life (not a extraordinary one, but with plenty of issues to explore. Thanks again. Mayte (MFL tutor)
Brilliant, engaging and relatable ❤
Elite - thank you for your knowledge and inspiration!
"The ghosts of the mind" 💡
I love it.
Alain is an amazing psychotherapist! Thank you for all your research and teaching us about childhood trauma and relationships. You are the best!
He is not a psychotherapist, he's a philosopher :)
I wonder whether we are putting so much pressure on parents, in a cruel incomprehensible world , that there is just no way we can ever get it right.
At weekend dinner parties Alain describes himself thus, " Hi, I'm Alain, a philosopher" Even Socrates and Plato would show a little more humility.
Why do you want him to be humble by defining himself as something other than he is?😂

and would you please have a BSL interpreter help to have subtitles for Deaf society as we are also in need?
ok, i'm quite severely mentally ill according to his definition, good to know, i can't get out of it though. it's literally impossible for me not to think of these things
Smug certainty packaged to sell books?
Why did you take down my comment? Do you want me to make a longer report?
Sometimes the algorithm takes it down when there’s nothing in common with the subject at hand. and no, they just want you to get a life.
reminds me of a comment that the British think that optimism is some kind of eye disease
Too many jolting tripwire ads cutting in. I will avoid this channel for that reason & will listen to him thru other means.
Recap , mental health issues are common, temporary and or permanent, fragile beings, childhood environment factors. Why? Brain is undeveloped then wired by reacting to the environment .
Adverts stopped me from watching
Thanks for the lecture But Sir, please TURN COMMENTS OFF. There are too many egos who having listened to your enlightening lecture, then immediately feel a need to hijack, copy, paste quotes or give their evaluation blah. blah blah. We all should SHUT UP, and just listen, absorb and go quietly reflect/contemplate upon what was shared. At least before we open our mouths etc.
crazy and insane are very different...OMski
The problems with this trouvaille of thoughts is that they cannot or nearly cannot be demonstrated to be wrong. It always fits, the story always fits no matter what. If a story cannot be falsified it ceases to be science. It may be art, therapy, philosophy or psychiatry: but it is not science what Alain de Botton is teaching us.
you seem to miss the point
nobody claimed it was science, it would be utterly ridiculous to rely just on science to understand things and get through life that way, good luck with that
@@littlesometin oh, if it is not science, therefore makes no claim to validity, I am not the least bit interested in it. Others may be into gods, fairies, unicornology, and what if scenarios, not me, just interested in reality.
@@user_user1337 Logical positivism is dead, dude. The world has moved on. I'm not going to debate a positivist in the comments.
@@littlesometin "I'm not going to debate a positivist in the comments." Well, people might think you already DID. Truth is truth, no matter what the period. I am not going to move on from Capital-T Truth.
He was asked about anger and gave a poor, rambling reply. There needed to be a follow up by the questioner to discuss and clarify but he just moved on to the next questioner. Unfirtunately he is no expert on these matters tho he knows something about them.
Then why don’t you tell us about it.
I think de Boton should stay with philosophy. His venture into psychotherapy might seem like the logical next step in his career, but it feels like sleight of hand to me. I wouldn't consult him under any circumstances. Hubris knows no bounds.
Here’s my biggest concern, first off, he recommends therapy every two weeks. My question is for how long? Also at my age that shit is expensive, espescially if I don’t want a run of the mill therapist either. This is hard to actually put into practice, which is his point I know that, but I’m saying practically speaking it’s hard.
Put a bunch of waffling crap waste of time.
So you didn’t understand it then?
I have said sooo many of these things to clients over myvlife time. And had ooodles of therapy but still effing struggling. 🫣 Ah well.. one foot, other foot...
