He even said it's not as big a deal as what's going on in the world, but to him, it means a lot and when something like that happens it is a disaster. • Your angest is understandable, however, the medallion is eminently restorable. You don't need to replace it. Instead, it can be pieced together by a reputable restorer. That's the strategy used to restore elaborate 19th century plaster ceilings at Windsor Castle that collapsed in a fire. The pieces were cleaned, reassembled, with missing bits recreated and then reattached to the ceilings. Like you say, restore rather than replace.

    @timhazeltine3256@timhazeltine32562 жыл бұрын
    • If you have a chance, watch the special on restoring Windsor Castle, it's inspirational for any restorer. Finally, make sure to check the medallion for multiple layers of paint. Best to remove them to reveal the crispness of the original design, which often is obscured by paint.

  • That medallion falling, while tragic, is not as big a deal as you may think. My uncle owned a brownstone in Boston and broke his medallion in a million pieces. It took a long time, but he put it back together. You can make molds for the parts that are missing, from the parts that are left. The make kits for just that situation. Now you will be a master of plaster casting as well. 😁

  • Well, this is unfortunate, but you've learned a valuable lesson. OSHA is criticized by trades people, but it's important to remember that safety codes are written in blood. You're very lucky that the medallion is the only loss in this situation. Your father could have been seriously injured. I hope you clearly mark and temporarily board up holes in the floor in the future, and take care of the other hazards in your house. None of this is worth you, Kim, or your dad's lives/health.

    • You're lucky it wasn't worse, but it is crazy to leave an uncovered hole like that, if you moved the trash can, then right away cover the hole with plywood. You were so safe with harnesses when you were working on the windows, keep that mind frame at all times to limit even a possible major injury.

  • One advantage with the medallion being "removed," is now it will be easier to see what the original finish was, especially if it was polychrome with metallic accents. Once repaired, you can duplicate the original finish before replacing it on the ceiling. A setback, yes, but use it to your advantage. You know it will be great in the end. The powder room looks wonderful, so true to the period and the spirit of the house. Great job!

  • Please don't take this as an attack. When you are working by yourself, your safety is your choice. When you are responsible for others, this being your project, might need to stop for a bit and remove the source of danger.

  • My parents had a similar issue with their home a few years back with their gutters. Try upsizing your gutters, if you have 6” then go with 8”. The size difference isn’t super noticeable from the ground but it will give you a lot more volume and allow your gutters to flow better.

    @WesSites@WesSites2 жыл бұрын
  • Yes, Kim is ALWAYS the MVP. She may not be out in front doing the showy work or having the know-how to do the heavier work or plan the restoration work, but she’s the support crew (along with John). And without the support, nothing can work or stand alone. 💕 So sorry for your setbacks. And sorry for John, too. I can only imagine how he felt. He’s so invested in this with you and has contributed so much. He must have been devastated for himself, for the house, and for you. In the end, thank God nobody was hurt. That’s the important thing. And the medallion can be fixed or replaced. People and the living contributions they’ve made and continue to make cannot. I know that you’re beginning to feel that now. 💕

It‘s heartbreaking, they had to leave husbands and boyfriends back home, as they’re not allowed to leave the country. It’s all really hard. Still - so glad they fled and are now safe with us.

  • My dude, I totally understand the disappointment. I have a 18th century Louis XV French walnut bed that I bought as my first antique when I was 18 yo and got my first full-time job back in 1986. I still have it but when I last moved 10 years ago, one of the side-rails with metal clips slid down the front of the bed and made a HUGE 20 inch gash right down the front. SO basically a 200 year old bed ruined in 1.5 seconds due to my own negligence. Shit happens and I totally get it. This, unfortunately, is going to be one in MANY things that will go wrong with the house and get broken, go missing, etc. Prepare yourself now.

  • This could very well be a blessing in disguise - this happening made you aware of an unsafe situation in the house that now SAVED you from some really terrible thing happening in the future. A child (or a dog) could have fallen all the way through. Think about that. Now you'll never leave a hole open again. Also... FIX THE ORIGINAL! It'll be great content for your youtube channel! It's plaster. It can be glued, if properly prepared. The cracks can be filled. Mount the whole thing on a stable backing and use that backing to secure it to the ceiling. Sure it'll be repaired, but it will be the original - and it becomes part of the story of the house. Gather all the pieces, put it aside for now, learn from this, and then have FUN putting it back together.

    @ChrisRubeo@ChrisRubeo2 жыл бұрын
    • Also, wouldn't they have to strip and re-assemble the medallion to create a proper casting, anyway? Well, hell, that's the hard part right there! Think of the backing piece as doing the work of holding the medallion together - then it's just filling the missing bits, which you can sculpt, or make molds of existing parts to create missing pieces. Easy-peasy with your attention to detail.

  • I totally understand your pain over the broken medallion and I know how easy it is to blame yourself but consider this... you're attempting to save this historic building which was in a critical state. If trying to save the life of a person through CPR, you're bound to crack their rib, it'll hurt and you'll feel guilty, feel like you should have done things differently, but they won't care. Because thanks to you they'll live a long life filled with happy memories. You've saved this house, the pain of the broken medallion will fade, concentrate on filling it with happy memories.

  • Regarding the roof, this is more good news! Even if you had no gutters at all your house is supposed to be sealed to the weather. This gives you the opportunity to fix the wall issue that's been there since the day the place was built. The gutter is secondary to that, because there will always be things that clog gutters but there should never be a situation where water comes into the building, of course. Sounds like you need to seal along the top (and sides) of the casing on the outside of the window and then install some type of drip edge. (take a picture from the roof looking down on it and you'll probably see the gap between the casing and the brick). I don't think it's the tuck-pointing at all right now, since, wasn't that repaired? But, yes, the water-removal there need a robust solution moving forward. When in doubt, over-engineer it!

    @ChrisRubeo@ChrisRubeo2 жыл бұрын
  • Kaleb- look at it this way- yes the medallion won`t be the original, but neither is any of the wood you`re using on the front of the house on the dormers and trim. As long as they are copied from the original, that`s the best you can do. And you`re doing a great job BTW! I just hope your dad is OK and isn`t beating himself up over it.

  • I'm so glad you're all ok. I can relate to the feeling of "my stupid mistake caused this disaster." And you all work so hard! A good rule of thumb is to arrange things not for your best capabilities but for "what's the worst (reasonable) thing that could happen if I left things like this?" If anything depends on remembering to do/ not to do something, try REALLY hard to rearrange things so that distractions, accidental tripping, etc. can't cause major injury or destruction.

The old house I’ve been in a year had gutters that were completely full of weeds, dirt, growing plants. Thankfully no damage which was remarkable given the first time it rained after I moved in the water overflowed on all sides !

Clean it up, removing all the old paint (which will be much easier to do now at least at ground level!), use silicon molds and plaster to recast the missing sections, and there you go. It's not a steep learning curve. Yes - it's another week or two's work, but in the great scheme of things… The most important thing is that your dad is OK and survived another day. And never - ever - leave holes in the floor.

I have learned the hard way there are always a plus and a minus, or a left and a right, an up or a down, and most importantly a positive over a negative. Using the positive saves us from wear and tear on our souls, and in your case, all you have to do is look around and see all the amazing things you have already done and all of the folks who are cheering you on. In that way it is original, it still presides over the dinners and stories like it always has, but adds to your part of this story. Also, don't be so hard on yourself you are doing amazing things with this house. Keep going!

  • I work very hard to always be kind and positive on any KZhead comments that I post. I am sorry you had a challenging few weeks. I am glad John was not injured when his leg went through the hole. I would have been extremely hurt if I had an accident at the home of one of my kids and they made sure everyone knew I had been the one that damaged, broke, ruined or destroyed something. I would probably not help them with their project anymore for fear of damaging something else that they cared so much about. I am glad Kim was there, being the absolute trooper she is, to help when the rain poured down. I hope your next weeks are better than this last one. The medallion can be repaired. It’s plaster.🌸

  • I’m glad your father is okay, but the medallion is heartbreaking. The anguish and grief in your voice, while discussing the situation, is heart wrenching. Hopefully, someone watching your videos will be able to save it. Boy, what a week.

  • This week will be better. The stencil looks wonderful and you ARE making so much progress. I think the events in the Ukraine make any damage seem worse . We had our old rotting deck demolished yesterday and watching made me emotional for the unnecessary destruction taking place over there. It affects us more than we know and comes out when we least expect. Your medallion, for example. The reality of something beautiful broken. It will be restored and every time you look at it think of the grace of restoration. Thank you for caring so much. And praying you and Kim have a productive week, month, year, decade! 🥰

  • Thank you for making that statement about Ukraine.. 😕 it’s extremely difficult to fathom what’s going on there but I’ve seen too many KZheadrs and people in general just ignore the topic or not say anything at all, you guys are amazing people and thank you so much for your support and sending your thoughts to the Ukrainian people. I myself am not Ukrainian but i have some friends who are.

  • Have you ever tried contacting Evergreen studios to restore the medallion or other items in the house? They are currently restoring the St. George Theatre on Staten Island, which was built in 1929. Not sure if they do small jobs or not but you can look into it. Actually, not sure they are the ones restoring the theatre BUT they HAVE restored important buildings and theatres.

I just wanted to let you know that these are minor set backs and I have no doubt that you will continue to do great things with your wonderful house. Your passion really comes through and I felt your sadness. I love the stencil work in the bath! It is looking so good! Have a great week and keep up the good work!

  • The gutter situation is a blessing in disguise. Better to see where a water problem is now before the room is completely finished. Since all the water runs to one point, you may want to consider adding another downspout in another area to relieve the pressure and volume of water coming off the roof.

    @noneofyourbusiness7094@noneofyourbusiness70942 жыл бұрын
  • The gutter on our one side of our roof on our 1916 farmhouse. Goes from one end of the 2 story roof to the other. At least 30 ft long. And the roof is at least 16 ft to the peak from the gutter. And we had a regular depth gutter up there. We live on the southern oregon coast. And when it rained hard that gutter would overflow. Even empty of debris it would overflow. So almost 3 years ago we had a new roof put on. And after the roofers were done. I had one of those continuous gutter companies come and do a continuous gutter on that side. But I told the guy that I wanted a deeper depth gutter on that side. The guy argued with me. Saying it wasn't Necessary. Because what do I know. I'm just a 62 year old women who has lived in the house at that time 26 years. But I said who is paying who here? And I got my deep gutter. And guess what. It has not overflowed 1 time in almost 3 years now. Get deeper gutters. They work. It's amazing how the wind can blow debris a long ways. And your house has the Mansard roof that is pretty flat back there. And the debris probably hits it and drops down into the gutter. Also I know you are sadgry (sad angry) at yourself about what happened to the medallion. But just think of all the rest of the house that you have saved already and will continue to save. That without you, would probably not been saved and preserved by someone else. They would have just ripped everything out and threw it in a dumpster. And then put in new modern junk in the place for all that beauty. So just think of all that you have saved and restored. Not the oops moment. Just learn from the mistake. And continue on. And please cover up all those floor holes. I've been really worried about those since you have been working on the electric. And I'm so glad your dad is OK. Things can be replaced. Dad's can't.

As someone else mentioned in the comments, sometimes the lows can make the highs seem higher, and I hope that's true for the house. She's beautiful and she's lucky to have you two as her caretakers. Thank you, also, for the words about and links to support Ukraine. Much Love. =)

  • Don't be so hard on yourself! Totally understand the frustration, but glad your dad is ok- that could have been a bad fall. If you're looking to save some money on recreating it, you could definitely do this yourself with some dental alginate and plaster! I've done it many times myself before for art projects!

It will be ok. And the water leak- call it a blessing in disguise. Now you can figure out an issue that plagued the house. I know you will and everything will work out.

  • Don't feel bad about showing emotion, Kaleb. I cried when I saw the thumbnail because I knew exactly what I was looking at. I'm invested in your house, too. 😭 That medallion is one of a kind. However, I _love_ a good, challenging restoration project, and I know that you'll repair it flawlessly. Plus, now, you'll have the extra story to go with that beautiful showpiece! If you're ever in Spfld, IL you should come by our restoration project on a Queen Anne Victorian in Enos Park! 😉

It's perfectly ok to be upset and sad about events like the medallion and the rain. Having watched your channel for so long, you seem like a person who will learn from what happened and move on accordingly. Give yourself permission to feel how you feel and you'll do a lot better in the long run. Kim, you're amazing! John, I am so glad you weren't hurt!

Spread the uniqueness around and cast more medallions. Maybe other people restoring their houses will want a copy of that beautiful medallion too. Sorry to hear about the waterfall in your house. Terrible news since you thought you had it all fixed. Kim is a keeper! Not many women would drop everything and help out AND get up on the roof during a heavy rain. Yes, I can see how it was an over whelming week. Whew!!! You've been through a lot. It will make a good story in the future about YOUR history in the house.
