In order to alleviate his loneliness, the coalition SOS PONSO bought a stuffed animal for Ponso. It didn't last long but at least it was a good enrichment for Ponso who's been living alone on this island for 3 years after the last member of his group died. Ponso comes from Liberia where he was used in medical testing by VILAB ( now the NY BLood Center) and brought to Ivory Coast to be released in the 80's. This man is one in two million. How kind hearted to take care of his friend. This breaks my heart. I hate he is alone. So sad sad
My heart broke when he grabbed his friends hand as if to say "come on over! I missed ya".
Tell me that this ape is not intelligent. Look how he piled up his food in a neat orderly pile in a safe place. You can see how he got emotional and sad when he couldn't get the guy to go onto the island to play and for companionship when he just went back into the tree and just sat there. Such a sad story for this big furry boy. My heart breaks for him. That is no life for anyone. Loneliness is a killer. A killer of spirit. Bless those men that make this trip out for Ponso. Karma will be kind to those who give.

Maybe intelligent for an ape but not a human. It's easy to anthropomorphize animals (especially primates) but you can't assume that it thinks as you do...

He's so adorable that he mortally wounded the female chimp that they were trying to bring on to the island. He was on this island with like 20 or so chimps and all of them died except him. Chimps are territorial and aggressive. You have to think what did he do on that island to be the only surviving one. The only remaining chimps on the island before he became the sole survivor was his mate and their two offspring. Because he has shown aggression in the past I bet he killed a few chimps on that island. Don't let his cuteness fool you.

Cynthia Dawn Loreth - they tried to bring him a companion in Nikla but he rejected her. I think he has gotten used to living by himself
@@cynthiadawnloreth553 loneliness does *_not_* equal suicide in people in general!! It might cause a small percentage of people to kill themselves but that is pretty rare overall!
@@tdoggo7614 just like people they are not going to like every one of their species they meet. That being said it is very, very unlikely that he has come to like living all alone considering the psychological damage they always experience when they are isolated.
Gina Powell - Ponso likes his human friends so he isn’t completely alone. That being said, it’s sad that he rejected Nikla. It’s not like they have the resources to keep trying different chimps like it’s some kind of dating game.

Sadly, he rejected a female they tried to introduce. He likes his island to himself. He is very fortunate to have Germaine, Estelle and Junior to visit him. Good people still exist.

@zs 02 he spent his life in a lab. Safe to say he is a bit messed up. He also watched his family die of starvation. Thanks to a rich guy in NY.
I was very surprised that not only did he reject, Nikla, the female chimpanzee but physically hurt her and did some damage. Because he was so gentle and not aggressive towards Estelle who is a human. He's been abused by humans at the lab so I was shocked on how non threatening he was to estelle but hurt the other chimp. Chimps can be territorial and aggressive and even kill their own kind. If he was the only surviving chimp out of 20 and the last three to pass away was his mate and two off spring than he's gotta be a savage to have been the only surving one.

The people that first dumped them on an island with limited resources and no skills, and then abandoned them should be in prison. Thank goodness that compassionate man came along to bring him food.
oh hell no.. there must be a way to get this poor boy a friend.. This is heartbreaking. He looked like he wanted to get on the boat and go with them, after he took the bag of fruit. Why does he need to be alone? surely they can sort something out.
well I know I am about 4 years late on this but...They did try to get him a female chimpanzee companion but he rejected the offer.
They tried. The female they introduced was beaten badly and almost killed by Ponso. He’s used to being alone and isn’t interested in the company of other chimpanzees at this point in his life.

I keep watching these videos with Ponso and some say he is getting a new friend ,another of his own, yet i`ve not seen this yet...is he still alone, so sad if he is.
They tried to introduce Nikla but he rejected and actually beat her. They won’t be trying that again. It’s been over a year and they won’t post that because it makes Ponso less sympathetic.

Watching monkey world, it's not easy to match chimps, it takes a long time. Some never get along. I hope there are more people involved with Ponso than just 3.... They need back up especially at this time of Coronavirus. Does he have food on his island?

Haha He's precious! After he was done with the stuffed animal he was like "What else you have for me?" Ponso is so cool! I hope he lives out a great life on the island and maybe one day (since it didn't work out with Nikala) maybe they can bring in a new friend for him. Maybe even non chimpanzee!

Has anyone stated why he can't be integrated with the 66 chimps on "monkey island?" I know there might be social issues with a stranger being introduced into the other group, but isn't it worth trying? Could it be any worse than living alone?
They did try to bring a female to him. But he reacted violently and they eventually gave up.

The poor animal wants to go on the boat. He needs companionship. Chimps are social animals. A few minutes to bring him food is not enough social time.

chimps are my favourite animal because i got so much in common with them some times and some times not and other all i can understand them like they get angry easily and i get angry easily so yeah i just like chimps

I think there is something wrong with your boat when you were approaching the island, it kept making fart and backfire noises. You should have that checked by a certified mechanic ASAP.

This man (Germain) brings him food every day though and there's apparently no food on the island, so Ponso would die without Germain. And he's about all the company Ponso gets. With normal male chimps, it would be crazy, but with Ponso and Germain I think it's a calculated risk.

Sadly, Ponso died on his island on March 2, 2024, apparently from a heart attack, he was about 50 years old
Can they contact Alison Cronin at Monkey World Dorset UK. This lady is an expert and could at least offer advice towards a solution. Dr Cronin recognises no geographic boundaries and , would move a monkey across the globe and has done to make sure they have a safe, comfortable retirement amongst friends of their own kind. Its so sad to see him lonely. 😞
He needs about 5 females to keep him company, and busy.
Has anyone thought about relocating this lonely guy to a sanctuary with others of his kind? He was social before the others passed away. It is painful to see him all alone like this, it's bad enough that he was experimented on but to lonely without choice is another thing altogether.
They decided, after the introduction of Nikla failed miserably, that he does not want to be with other chimps. Apparently, it was a while before he trusted Germain again. So sad

Apes are so beautiful and intelligent creatures. My heart breaks for these animals when I see how arrogant we humans are thinking we ha*earning . We can see in their face and eyes their expressions of hope, love, loneliness, joy, sorrow. Sometimes I wish could visit and care for them. The sacrifice of their lives in research does save human lives I suppose but we have no right to sacrifice any other of God's creatures to serve our purpose simply because we are the dominant life form. It truly is sad and breaks my heart each time I see these things.

This man is a saint. The NY blood bank, or who ever is responsible for this situation should be held accountable to the highest extent of the law. But what I do not get at all is wtf is up with spending one dime on a f-ing stuffed animal for this chimp! Did someone really think that a stuffed animal is going to help him? Does it help him? I am not a primate specialist, but I have a lot of common sense. I do not think it helps much. I think the priority would be for food or getting him off that lonely island and into a friendly chimp group or something more effective to help. I wonder if he is still there, alone? I do not have much money. I wonder what else, aside from money, needs to be done? I'm willing to do something other than waste time chatting on UTube.
