Today we find out how durable the Surface Pro 2 really is! Get a 4-week trial, free postage, and a digital scale at www.stamps.com/jerryrig. Thanks to Stamps.com for sponsoring the show! Dual screen phones have alway appealed to me. Maybe because Ive always had dual displays for my desktop PC. But.... This Microsoft Surface Duo 2 (running android) doesnt really move my meter. I wish Microsoft would do something new in the moble space... like make a pocket sized computer. What do you think? Let me know down in the comments.

    @Xshunin@Xshunin2 жыл бұрын
    • The ones that like gpd products - buy them. And in "niche handheld/umpc" devices, gpd has a pretty good succes. You sure can't compare the number of people who will buy lenovo legion 5 for 1k usd and play games on high settings with people that will spend the same 1k usd for a umpc with "draws" that comes with small size. And i have the ms duo 1. Got it on high price cut, and i love the design as much as i hate the software.

      @Tiamorg@Tiamorg2 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah, exactly this. The Dell Venue 8 was probably the best known 8" Windows tablet when it launched, but Dell don't sell anything that small now. Even Microsoft's own Surface Go's screen has grown from its initial 10". Full fat Windows apps just aren't designed for screens that small, hence we got touch-friendly UWP apps... which did the same things Android apps did only worse. Outside of specialist devices like the GPD or Steam Deck, I don't see small screened Windows devices making a comeback.

      @me2olive@me2olive2 жыл бұрын

    • Jerry two things: you can easily leave the phone oppened in your pocket if you dont want to open it. Also outti g full fledged windows on a device this small is just no realistic for a couple of reasons. Firdt snd foremkst windows obviousky was not designed for screens this small and wiuld never be usable, notto mention all windkws programs that also were not designed for small screens. Therefore your proposition is a non starter. Microsoft would love to be able to their own software on a pocketable device that is what windows phone was for. Unfortunately lack of developer suport killed it. I am a surface duo 2 owner and i absolutely love it. It definitely does not have bugs like the first one had. I came from a candy phone android device straight to this and its awasome. Its exactly like the dual screen analogy you mentioned.

Samsung DeX was able to do it and MS partnered with them to make the office apps a better fit for it. • It still baffles me, that in times where being environmentally friendly, companies refuse to work on a 1-for-all solution. Samsung Dex comes close, but is still weighed down by Android, the same issue that the Surface Duo runs into. Apple's getting closer to perfecting the iPad as a 1-for-all solution, but even with that M1-chip in their Pro models, they still left out some features that would have made the iPad a fully fledged, smaller, lighter laptop. Pretty sure it is no coincidence. These companies still prefer we carry around 3 different systems with us, whilst trying to come across as caring for the environment.

I like that this is different, and the screen aspect ratio feels better than the ultra wide of most phones. That long, skinny brick design is getting old. I don't mind at all that the phone needs to open to answer. It auto answers if you flip the second screen all the way around. Being that it feels like a book, reading books or comics on this thing feels great. If there was one real criticism from me it is that the default Microsoft keyboard, which you basically have to use, leaves a bit to be desired and needs more customization options.

  • Windows Phone... didn't exactly go so well though. If Microsoft had stuck with Windows Mobile and made improvements maybe things would have been different, but now in 2021 it really doesn't make sense for Microsoft to have yet another crack at the phone market, in software terms. Remember, Android apps are coming to Windows 11 so you will get interoperability on that front. As for whether it would sell, the Dell Venue 8 was probably the best known 8" Windows tablet when it launched, but Dell don't sell anything that small now.

    @me2olive@me2olive2 жыл бұрын
  • MS has all the tools to make Windows work on ARM and on devices like these. Windows 10 on phones and Windows Phone 8 had a good things going for it but MS botched it and then dropped the ball with it. MS Office suite on Windows Phones was way behind Android and iOs apps and that's the first party app! Notifications were a nightmare on Windows phone devices and they never did work properly and settings on Widows Phone 8 was just menu with random items. It did get better with Windows 10 but a lot of phones were cut from support even if they had performance to support it. I do agree that MS Duo 2 is being held back by android since windows already has wonderful multiscreen support and yes the lack of outside screen makes that more like foldable tablet rather than foldable phone.

    • I see his statement not so much as blaming Android, but stating the short comings of Android for any foldable mobile device in general. Think about it, why did Android started the development of 12L? They knew foldable will not be successful on current Android design. I think Android 12L is the beginning of robust Os design for foldables such OEM can just do HW, skin the Os, but let the Os do all the heavy lifting that will make foldable do good stuff and solve problems that single screen Phones can not do. All current foldable phone manufacturing are doing independent codes additions to show what foldable can do which might not help Android Os in terms of fragmentation. Let the Os direct and standardize the best use and features for foldables and OEM can add there own values and extras.

The issue with your surface series is that they do not have specs of modern devices, it overheats while being idle, and you're charging apple prices for Apple level hardware. You can only pull what apple does with a reputation, so make really good products with hardware of a modern Laptop. People will live with its thickness, no matter how thick. Make it durable and Repairable. This is doable, or you can wait when everyone is doing this, years down the line and keep chasing their tails.
