  • Lead exposure can cause high blood pressure and brain, kidney and reproductive health issues in adults. Symptoms of lead poisoning include headaches, stomach cramps, constipation, muscle/joint pain, trouble sleeping, fatigue, irritability, and loss of sex drive. Most adults with lead poisoning don't look or feel sick. They just die.

    • According to NIH... It is usually assumed that lead can be absorbed through the skin only if it is present as an organolead compound such as tetraethyllead or lead naphthanate. It has been found, however, that finely-powdered lead metal or lead nitrate solution placed on the skin results in rapid absorption of lead, and transport of the metal around the body. The absorbed lead appears in sweat and saliva, but not in blood or urine. The application of 6 mg of lead as 0.5 M lead nitrate to the left arm resulted in an increase in lead concentration in pilocarpine-induced iontophoresis sweat samples taken from the right arm, from an initial value of 15-25 micrograms Pbl-1 to greater than 300 micrograms Pbl-1 after 2 days. Saliva lead increased from 2.5 to 15 micrograms Pbl-1 in the same period. The rate of lead absorption through the skin increases with increased sweating of the skin. Since no measurable increase in blood lead has been found, the lead must be transported in the plasma and rapidly concentrated into the extracellular fluid pool (sweat and saliva), without significant uptake by the erythrocytes, and with a very low transient concentration in the plasma. Workers occupationally exposed to lead have extremely high levels of lead in sweat even though their lead in blood is only moderately elevated. Lead absorbed through the skin may be eliminated via sweat and other extracellular fluids, and hence as ingested lead, but this will need to be proved by further studies.

      @VenturiLife@VenturiLife9 ай бұрын
    • @HK-fz5rn sometimes batteries also have some antimony added to the lead grid to give it more structural strength as batteries dislike the constant vehicle vibration, which leads to grid failure then cell failure.

  • They are obiviously REDUCING the lead dioxide PbO² from dead positive plates to PbO with kerosen but why? Is n't PbO² the required material for positive plate??

    @Frogmobile52@Frogmobile525 ай бұрын
    • A discharged positive (& negative for that matter)plate is PbSO4, they're burning it to hopefully get PbO2 back. The reaction is supposed to give PbO + SO3, at 1000°C but slowly burning it could yield PbO2 + SO2 I guess? SO2 & SO3 are both precursors to H2SO4, I'd want to capture those fumes if I needed H2SO4 ? SO2 is supposed to be mildly toxic, often used in food preservatives, SO3 is highly corrosive & toxic, mixed with water it makes H2SO4. SO those fume will cause acid rain. Inhaling SO3 is basically poisoning yourself & 10 villages around you.

      @harshivpatel6238@harshivpatel62382 ай бұрын
    • A discharged battery plate (both +ve & -ve) is PbSO4. Burning it gets you SO2, or SO3 at high enough temperatures. SO2 isn't too bad unless you breath in it. SO3 is highly corrosive & toxic, causes acid rain. It's mist is odorless. It's a hazard.

      @harshivpatel6238@harshivpatel62382 ай бұрын
    • @@harshivpatel6238 Yep, that is a good reasonning, SO² goes up, one O goes with the fuel (it burns candlewax fiercely, i did it in my lab) and remains PbO² or PbO depending on the oxygene left. Thanks for your "positive" reply! 😀
