In Ayamatsu (Pride Route), we follow evil Subaru as he slowly transforms into the Sin Archbishop of Pride after failing to meet Reinhard in Episode 2. Elsa kills Subaru almost 100 times, causing him to go insane and eventually join the Witch Cult. This story is NOT canon. Think of it as a realistic spinoff where Subaru just happened to make all the wrong choices.
This What-IF story contains Arc 5 web novel spoilers (only relating to the character Regulus) around halfway through the video, but I will give a warning beforehand, so anime-onlies can safely watch this video up until that point. In this video summary I tried to keep Season 2 spoilers minimal, so I neglected to mention certain details that pertain to Season 2, while still trying to keep the summary accurate and interesting.

Imagine being Reinhard, you're just a bro saving people, you may even remember when you saved Subaru from Elsa. And then this guy kills everyone, everyone you care about and you're helpless to protect them, only you survive. And then you confront the deranged monster that did this and he says he did it out of spite for your power. "Visibly shook" is probably an understatement, Reinhard would be broken after the hate subsides with Subaru's death, mentally shattered. Subaru really did win this route.

((Possibly big spoilers below) So, after reading everything a good while ago (web novel wise) and a sudden thought that came to me when thinking about pride. The Archbishop of Lust has her authority to transform/shapeshift. but the curse of Pride(deceased) that we saw fighting our beloved demon swordsman long ago also transforms people depending on how much they match/resist the curse of pride. Normals were turned into black giant flies, Crusch matched somewhat and as such didn't turn into a fly but got insane pain and was turned all black, veiny from it. Subaru matched/can take it and as such isn't in pain, in fact the cursed limb is stronger. And, ahead of time in case it comes up I want to say the one most likely to be matching Pride, able to take in pride's curse (or authority?) without turning black and veiny, but can like Subaru get stronger from Pride who, like Lust, is of royal blood and prideful... Felt.
Plot twist: all of these routes are cannon but at the end of each one Subaru returns by death back to the start and has all his memories erased by Satella and he has to restart the entire route over again this time choosing a different path.

Very very interesting story. I think this solidifies Subaru as the strongest character in the series. Not the strongest in terms of raw power, of course that belongs to Reinhardt, but the strongest as in he can accomplish nearly anything he puts his mind to (minus killing Reinhardt) where as other characters and Reinhardt cannot do the same. I see why people say Subaru and Reinhardt are foils to each other, or two sides of a coin. Like Superman and Batman, one can accomplish anything through raw ability and feats, the other can accomplish anything through preparation, intel and planning. Another cool thing is that I always noticed in stories that villians tend to be villains for stupid or miniscule reasons and events. Like if they just did something different, or forgave someone, or apologized they would end up living a completely different life. While I think that isn't a rule that applies to all villains, I think it definitely applies to Subaru. One small act of pride led to a life or pride and wickedness to his successful demise.

Honestly you can’t really blame Subaru if he really became evil in the anime.
With how hostile and even a bit pretentious the world and it's characters are... not at all. The world goes out of it's way to show that Subaru, is in fact, not the beloved main character. But rather a lowly side character that is easily killed off. But from his point of view, Subaru does not...will not accept that.
It's a what-if story written by the author I don't think Subaru will become evil in canon because it would be retarded. Unless he already is but if it's true then he doesn't know himself.
moral of the story: It's a bad choice to isekai a NEET (shut-in) or a lunatic in another world as they will only bring trouble. Hope in the light novel, the author will give details why the witch isekai-ed Subaru, based on what I see maybe just to be one of the cardinal sins (Pride) - a tool to bring more chaos. To be fair, this is an opposite take in an isekai type genre where the MC is usually a hero who will save the day, while Subaru on the other hand has all that chances yet took on a different path which eventually turning him into a villain and making his love one "Emilia - the hero" that took Subaru's life. All for pride ? all for love - so that Emilia will no longer face racial discrimination and be the ruler of their world just as Subaru wanted to be.

I would love to see Subaru in a completely different way to where we, as the audience, is not used to seeing. Reading the IF stories had made Subaru, for me, such a fascinating and complex character all around and I would love to see the overall reactions from audiences and listen to their honest opinions once they witnessed Subaru as pure evil!

I think the reason why he died permanently is because he failed he's purpose in this world. I think Satella brought him here so that Subaru could kill her but in order to kill Satella Subaru needs to past all the test of virtue and when he failed here Satella must have thought that there's no point in reviving him coz he's already strayed away from his purpose.

Wow that’s crazy. He really was like Roswaal. I see a lot of similarities. The both learn to devalue life because death has no consequences (Roswaal is different but you’ll get to that part later). They both go mad obsessing over butterfly effects. Ultimately only one thing remains in their heads: their ultimate goal. So yep definitely ends justifies means. And the ‘you just do what is best for emelia despite her feelings part’ shows here.
Subaru in this story is literally the most compelling and deep villian I have ever heard of. For no one ever sees themselves as the villian of their own story, and to commit the most agregrious of crimes out of what one perceives as love is the makings of an epic villian. As an anime only person, I really don't see how anything of value was lost by watching this. Nothing was really spoiled imo and the anime will probably never finish up anyways.

There's pretty much zero spoilers except that Regulus is a character with wives that is coming up, that's it.
Not shouting for help when you're in trouble (physically or mentally) is actually an unhealthy instinct that some people develop throughout their life mostly due their childhood. If you're extremely used to being the one that helps others (or people rely on you all the time) and not the other way around, you usually end up with an instinct of "how can (I) help myself" instead of "who can help me". In that case, this scenario can literally play out like this if Subaru wasn't as helpless as he was in his original life in Japan. Meaning, him being a pathetic loser in his previous life could have developed that "help me" instinct that prevented this route from developing in the first place.
These side stories make the series THAT much better. Each of them (other than lust but we don't talk about lust) add a massively new layer of depth to the series that it deserves

This video taught me a very important lesson, do the right thing for the littlest decisions. Sins can really harm a person and change their point of view on the world. The littlest things might not always be little.
Subaru hits home for me because I was in his shoes with nothing going right, made some prideful decisions that have cost me alot and hit rock bottom. I had to also cast aside my illusions I had clung too in order to keep going. I will say this the mental gymnastics subaru goes through are not only very realistic portrayals but something that will resonate deeply if you every have to go through it. Those who never reach such stressful periods may see subaru's emotional journey as overly dramatic. But its spot on, and makes me wonder if the author is channeling his own life. Often the best authors lead or had led miserable lives, and thus happy normies would find it difficult to write such dark and deep characters when they havent been to those places themselves.

This story really brings into perspective how OP Subaru really is and how much of an affect Subaru has on this world. Spoilers for the video This is definitely my favourite IF, the way Subaru changes, how everything around him changes and his journey in this messed up way. The way Tappei portrays this is amazing. The end was so satisfying, the calm yet twisted way he confesses. It brings you really into the twisted world of re:zero. I hope these stories get adapted as an OVA (sloth would probably be the best OVA because it is not as visibly twisted as the others) Also, the Wrath IF Subaru was actually able to deal with Reinhard which is funny

About Oboreru...well no, not really...he didn't deal with Reinhard. He greatly diminished his powers by building the tower that disabled a bunch of his blessings. But Reinhard still defeated Cecilus and there's a high chance he killed Puck as well. I think he got out of the tower alive

I think that it’s interesting that Subaru is willing to so easily throw away his life for his goals, and become similar to Roswaal, just how he wanted Subaru to become in the canon story.

Even when Subaru is a villain his character is still SO well written. I have some MAD respect for the writer.
I really respect him for accomplishing something such as destroying the kingdom that has so many powerful people to protect it. It is really scary and amazing to see that such a weak person can cause such damage that even the most powerful person looks helpless
When some one knows every one of your movements and actions before you even do, it makes for a terrifying foe. no matter how powerful you are, reinhard was probably one of the only hero's Subaru couldn't kill and even he was shaken.
His ability is beyond broken, the only thing that stops him from being the most powerful character is his sanity, but this Subaru doesn’t have his sanity.

The wait for season 2 is slowly killing me, and these videos keep me over the edge for Re Zero content Also, in regards to why Subaru actually died at the end, I think maybe that was because he was satisfied with his goal. He had no reason to keep going, an maybe Satella saw that. I find it hard to think that Satella gave up on him, as it's well established that her love for Subaru is absolute. Maybe the way to break the restrictions of Return by Death is to completely accept death, no regrets or anything. Subaru has never accepted death in the main story, he's always felt that there's more he needs to do, and that he needs to try for the perfect ending. Maybe when he finally gets the ending he wants, he'll die permanently.
It is shown that it's possible to overrite Authorities. It's extremely hard but possible (Reid overriding the Authority of Gluttony, for example). So...the most likely reason as to why Subaru died at the end is simple. Just as you said...he achieved what he wanted. There was no reason for him to continue. But that part about Satella is most likely incorrect. TL:DR no matter how hard she tries, if Subaru refuses RDB he will die and Satella cannot do anything against it. (At least that's the conclusion i came up with)
@@IEatBears4Breakfast that is also a very plausible conclusion. RBD is an extremely interesting power, and I'd love to know exactly what it's rules and restrictions are. As of now, we know that he can't talk about it to anyone, and that he can't control his save point or return to previous ones. Other than that, the details of RBD are super unclear, and I hope that we get to learn more about in Arc 7, but that's probably not gonna happen. I have a feeling that the explanation of RBD is endgame material I personally think that RBD is a contract, and that Satella made this one-sided contract with Subaru either when she first pulled him into the world, or when Subaru promised to save Emilia.
This was probably the happiest death Subaru has had in the series.

Good summary. Pride IF is probably my favorite of the lot. In no way, by any real standard, is Pride Subaru's goal "for Emilia". It was for Subaru; because he wanted to make her King, and he saw no other way to make her King than to kill everyone else and burn down the country. And I love that! Canon-Subaru says he wants to help Emilia just because he wants to -- Pride IF is that idea taken in full. Canon-Subaru actually got to know Emilia and wants what would actually make her happy; Canon-Subaru actually believed in Emilia and thought she could actually achieve things on her own. Pride Subaru did not and had no faith in her, and did everything simply because it was what he wanted to do. Because he wanted to be the one to give it to her, with no care at all if she even really wanted it or why. And he died one last time because he was satisfied, with even the writer confirming that to be the only, of any Subarus, happy death. I think Satella just wanted Subaru to live a life to his desires. In Pride IF, Subaru got what he wanted and Return By Death would have only gotten in the way of it. The way I see it, Pride Subaru likely stays dead and is pulled into that void space with Satella and Envy. Not really sure how he would feel about that, honestly, but I do not think Envy would let him go.
Agreed, even in the Sloth route, Subaru was extremely haunted his whole life. Pride Subaru is like a Genocide Route Frisk (idk, never played Undertale) and dies satisfied.

I think that in this route Satella gave up on Subaru, because he *became* the sin archbishop of Pride, completely throwing out the sin of envy out the window.
Oh but he throwed that away at the moment when he accepted to join Witch Cult already. It's more like about Desire which Subaru always had and when he finally reached his desired ending and was satisfied with this results then what meaning that he lost desire which kept him to not giving up and if he doesn't want to keep going then only thing for Satella left was to released him from grasp of her power.
