► AUDI A4 - A5 - A6 - A7 - A8 - Q5 - Q7: Audi quattro with self-locking crown-gear centre-differential anq torque vectoring
Audi debuted the 6th generation of quattro in the 2010 RS5. The key change in generation VI is the replacement of the Torsen Type "C" centre differential with an Audi-developed "Crown Gear" differential. With the new "Crown Gear" center differential, up to 70% of the torque can be applied to the front wheels while up to 85% can be applied to the rear wheels if necessary. The net result of this advance in quattro is the ability of the vehicle electronics to fully manage the vehicle dynamics in all traction situations, whether in cornering, acceleration, braking, snow or in any combination of these. This system was later adopted by the A7, latest generation of the A6 and A8.
► AUDI A1 - A3 - Q2 - Q3: Audi quattro with HALDEX
Starting from 1998, the Swedish Haldex Traction LSC unit replaced the viscous coupling. Haldex is used by Audi on the quattro versions of the Audi S1, Audi A3, Audi S3, and the Audi TT. It is also used by Volkswagen in the 4motion versions of the Mk4 and Mk5 generations of Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Jetta, and the Golf R32, Volkswagen Sharan, 6th generation VW Passat (also based on the A-platform) and Transporter T5. On the Audis, the trademark holds, and are still referred to as quattro, whereas the Volkswagens receive the 4motion name. The Škoda Octavia 4x4 and SEAT León 4 and SEAT Alhambra 4 also used Haldex LSC, being based on Volkswagen Group models. Curiously, the Bugatti Veyron also utilizes Haldex, though with separate transmission, PTU and front and rear axles.
► Audi R8: Audi quattro with Viscous Coupling
This 4WD system was used only on Volkswagen branded vehicles, and was never used on any Audi cars except Audi R8 model.
A viscous coupling installed instead of a centre differential, with freewheel mechanism to disconnect the driven axle when braking.
Normally a front-wheel drive vehicle (except Vanagon, see above). In normal driving conditions, 95% of torque is transferred to front axle. Because viscous coupling is considered to be "slow" (some time is needed for silicone fluid to warm-up and solidify), 5% of torque is transferred to rear axle at all times to "pre-tension" the viscous coupling and reduce activation time. The coupling locks when slipping occurs and up to near 50% of torque is automatically transferred to rear axle (front in Vanagon). In on-road conditions, the car will not move if one front wheel and one rear wheel lose traction.
The freewheel segment, installed inside the rear differential, lets rear wheels rotate faster than front wheels without locking the viscous coupling and preventing ABS from applying brakes to each wheel independently. Because of the freewheel, torque can be transferred to rear axle only when the vehicle is moving forward. For four-wheel drive to work when reversing, a vacuum-actuated "throttle control element" is installed on the differential case. This device locks the freewheel mechanism when in reverse gear. The freewheel mechanism unlocks when the gear-shift lever is pushed to the right, past the third gear. The freewheel is not unlocked immediately after leaving reverse gear on purpose - this is to prevent the freewheel from cycling from locked to unlocked if the car is stuck and driver is trying to "rock" the car by changing from first to reverse and back.
Disadvantages of this four-wheel drive system are related to actuation time of the viscous coupling.
When cornering under acceleration on a slippery surface, the rear axle is engaged with delay, causing sudden change in the car's behaviour (from understeer to oversteer).
When starting on a sandy surface, the front wheels can dig into the sand before all-wheel drive is engaged.

Having watched this video, I now feel like I know LESS about the various quattro systems
The same for me
I wanted to know how the quattro system works. Thank you for putting this together.
Thanks for the description!
Thanks for good video GBCP really unique intelligent system best of all times until now.

Torque vectoring on my 2019 sticks the car to the road like glue at the track.
Torsen ofc
I prefer Torsen system!
Torsen is the best
@@harishajdarevic9038 please bro : Which is the diference between the torsen and audi ultra quatro ? And how is the best ?
What kind of Torsten system does 4L generation Audi Q7 have? Anyway, I love how it drives in the winter with proper winter tires. It’s way fun with controlled rear end slide under full power. I don’t think my 2013 has too many electronic gizmos in the system.
Torsen C with 42/58 FR torque split. Unlike other torsen quattro systems, the one in Q7 has separate transfer case so it's not that nose heavy.
More confused than ever. Need a video to explain each. Too many systems per video leaves me confused. And I don’t confuse easily.😂😂😂
I understand how overwhelming it can be when there are too many systems covered in one video. I'll take note of your feedback and try to break down the information more clearly in future videos.

the BEST? TORSEN. all 3 diffs preferably. reliability is unbeatable, no wear, no electronics.
Allroad C7 3.0bitdi?
Can Drive Select control the Haldex? Like in dynamic mode does it force the Haldex to lock up?
I believe so. I know the offroad gives it permanent AWD.
@@teleguy5699 I drive a 2019 Audi A3 Quattro
I love Audi but I live in Alaska where owning one of these would be a terrible idea. Boulders and 18-in potholes that routinely frequently cluster in your path in an ever-changing changing landscape, that can also feature up to a foot of water regularly driven through, without any kind of underbody protection or electronics that are insulated, they're just not practical here, furthermore there's no way to work on them if something breaks down anywhere out here, very sad.
I think a better experience living in Alaska than drive an Audi...You havevto buy an Uaz 469. Saluti da Italia 🙋
GET A UNIMOG if y'all live in Palinland
Combine all the all wheel drive system technologies from every company in one car. It will be the perfect grip machine.
The cAll it the Tesla 🤣
i have an audi a4 b9 2017 , 2.0 TFSI engine with 252hp quattro, CYMC engine. what kind of differential i have ? can u give me some links to see ?
Torsen center diff. If you have the Quattro Ultra, there is an additional claw coupling which disengages the rear wheels under normal conditions to save fuel.
Quattro Ultra, i.e. not permanent quattro like with a torsen.
Anyone know about Audi A6 C7 2016 sedan 2.0 tdi 190 hp quattro S-Tronic. What type of torsen?
Torsen C.
Does the s4 b8 and rs4 b7 use a different system? If so what kind?
Well, it was 2 years ago, and there no response so far . A4b7 generation uses torsen, and i believe the b8 generation can use it too or the ultra. Depending on how was bought at the dealership
Torsen. They are loseing durabiliti with the electronic crap
they stopped using Torsen a while back... even the ones that aren't electronic are their own "self locking"
Audi rs5 2018 or 2021 which deferential does it have?
Torsen
Anyone knowing what is the type of the quattro in my car ? It's Audi A4 B9 Allroad 2.0 TDI 190hp, S-Tronic 7 speed gearbox.
Could be the quattro ultra, not sure 100%
@@SamuelVaran nope. Mine is with torsen. GH1 code.
@@plamenyovchevthat’s great! What year is the car?

All audi awd’s mentioned in the video are not based on torsen differential.
Torsen!!
9:50 track ID?
So much expensive and breaking and wearing system instead od just working and service free torsen :D Lol.
is the 1st video explanation is torsen ?
No, it’s a crown gear differential, which has a similar principle, but it is not Torsen. The whole video doesn’t mention Torsen at all, which is quite strange.
These models are second to none.
Front quife + torsen + rear quife(or lsd)
Horribly loud ana annoying soundtrack make this video difficult to watch and add nothing to the content.
I love the music!
Anyone know what center differential a 2015/B8.5 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro w/ 8 speed tiptronic transmission had/has?
2015 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro Sedan B8 automatic 8-speed (North America) - Torsen T3.
Whic car using pure torsen diferensial?
I own a 1991 Audi S2, which relies purely on torsen. there are some others. Later on more electronics were applied, with mixed success.
@@ronaldvossen Okeh tank you, 4 ur information.

Does this also apply to related S and RS models?
YES ... Thanks for Your Comment !!
Actually it's pretty confusing, but the best I can tell from Audi web site the S4, for example, has the full time AWD I believe, were as the A4 has two versions 1 ultra and 1 non ultra, The ultra having less power, pretty sure it has the decoupling rear end, but not sure on the non ultra. From drivers perspective I definitely prefer the crown gear over trying to save fuel. I am betting the RS3 has crown gear as well.
RS3 has engine transversely, so Haldex based AWD with 100/0 front rear distribution up to 50/50 only.
@@GommeBlog why does it seem the crown gear is only on a few RS models and not the rest? thought it was lighter and smaller...?
I’d hate to pay or fix that lol
Flat4Fan I just had my haldex and rear diff replaced on my S3 it’s still in the shop. From what I know now I’m paying $2200 out of pocket with my deductible included. This was due to a discrepancy between the warranty and repair shop pricing. I want the work done at the dealership for peace of mind. My warranty company wanted to provide a used diff but the dealership refused to put in a used one. I would feel better if all parts were new so I went with the dealership. The kicker is the first repair shop I went to was a joke. The mechanic tried to give me advice on how my key ring had too many things on it and how that was bad for my car?? Then I let him know “hey it’s push to start”. Red flags everywhere! So I decided to pay the premiums for a nice 2020 Q5 loaner vehicle and a clean OEM repair for my 15 S3.
Mini-ITX RiG yeah the warranty did cover it but the shop refused to put in used parts so I paid the difference
Mini-ITX RiG the real total of all the work done was well over 8000$ but I only pained 2200$
@@donteanderson6961 Interesting story. What actually went wrong with the diff?
Зелёный цвет это крутящий момент куда передаётся что ли
Super-AWC from mitsubishi is the best AWD, It doesn't burn power on breaks with torque vectoring, it has a better performance.
Indeed
The best all-wheel-drive system is found on the United States military Humvees!! I dare you to prove me wrong!
Useless video.. Torsen isn't shown, you showed Crown Gear which is only used on S and RS models. Ultra which is used on most modern Audi for fuel economy. Haldex used in S3 & TT etc..
This video says quattro transmits power through the wheels with the most grip, but my A4 just spins the wheels with least traction while the wheels *with* traction don't even move.
Then your transfer box needs maintenance, it might be worn out
@@TheMegaklub99 Funny you mention that. The transmission just blew a few weeks ago 😅
for torsen nothing 😢
No sport diff anymore?
sport diff is the diff on the rear axle
Eyesore video Unbearable
Congratulation! The most uninformative movie on the subject. Are you from Audi PR departement?
won't need all of this on EV lol
And now invent something that can disturb power from left to right because Quattro is the worst system that does(n’t) that. Maybe Subaru wil teach you a thing or 2.
Well, suby doesn't do that either. STi's DCCD is a more adjustable centre-diff with front and rear LSD. As of I know, only Mitsubishi's S-AWC and Acura's SH-AWD push power left and right. There might be more system that does it.
@@papercut1987 all LSD's distribute torque left and right depending on traction. Audi has the sport differential for example, which actively regulates this.
your comment is totally wrong and uneducated. your subi system is pretty crud and outdated. they realized that too, thats why they upgraded a little DCCD. Welcome to the modern world
the new mk8 golf r can do that
@@antoniosadorra4961 The Golf R and the new RS3 have the Magna system instead of Haldex. It was the same system used on the Ford RS.
The Mitsubishi Active Yaw Control is even better than this.
Mitsubishi is the best, that's why they have fantastic sales volumes. They have dealerships everywhere in America
This is when thumbs down would be huge to have
