Prince appeared on a December 10, 1999 episode of CNN's Larry King Live and talked about his career, his new album and why he changed his name.
Prince Rogers Nelson: ‘Every song was either a prayer or foreplay’
By Lisa Respers France and Eliott C. McLaughlin, CNN
Prince Rogers Nelson’s music transcended genres and generations. There were songs you could sing every word to, ditties that drove you to dance and ballads so poignant in their descriptions of love and life that anyone could relate.
Simply put, not that anything with the mercurial musician was simple, Prince had more hits than most musicians have songs in their catalogs.

Here's a Prince story: A guy I know was in a restaurant and noticed Prince, not wanting to bother him for an autograph he asked a waiter to tell Prince that he would pay for his meal, the waiter came back and said Prince said thank you- but no thanks. Prince shortly left. When the bill came for his own meal the waiter told him it was already paid for by Prince. What a low key class move. RIP Legend.
That's a wonderful story. Thanks for sharing!

So true ... nice to hear the man express himself thoughtfully and quitely in this intimate venue. Plus, there is no loud, raucus studio audience hooting and cheering and whooping and whistling for the guy. Try listening to Prince speak during an interview on The Arsenio Hall Show, it's pointless.

@Darrin Robinson why do you believe it would be pronounced that way?
@Darrin Robinson I found it very hard to keep a straight face and not laugh at the audacity you seem to have.🤦🏻♀️ You claim most people ignorant and uneducated all while YOU spew a huge load of undeserved, self-righteous, misspelled, incoherent, and incomplete ideas hid in a mess ignorant word vomit.🤔 I believe you are attempting to say that most people are ignorant and unthinking sheep, and instead you prove yourself to be exact those things. Your thoughts are unfinished and prove that you have not come to these conclusions or had ideas on your own. I don't believe you to have the education, reasoning, deductive skills, nor the common sense to come up with most of what you said by your own volition. You give out the impression of a person that has heard these ideas from someone much more educated than yourself. Now you are attempting (quite poorly if I may add) to recite dated and uninteresting rhetoric that I'm sure you have heard or had taught to you your whole life.😒 The "Love Symbol o(-+>" is not a symbol of any "deity"!😄 It is an image that was invisioned by, designed by, and created by none other than Prince Rogers Nelson himself . The symbol is meant to be a physical representation of his marriage to Mayte, their life together, the growth of their love, and him choosing to leave his past behind a become a new (and perhaps better) man. It is based in the combination of the symbols for male and female to show he and Mayte are now joined together, as one, in marriage. The cross line is used to represent how their love grew from something small and that it will continue to grow. Because Prince created the symbol, he is the only person that has the right to give it a name, pronunciation, meaning, or (thanks to it being copyrighted) a purpose and use. Please, in the future you should take the time to educate yourself, or know what you're talking about, before you make a public comment that does nothing but put your ignorance on display. Unless you enjoy being laughed at and embarrassed, I suggest you take time to proof read what you write before you post. Be sure to check for incomplete sentences, unfinished ideas, improper grammar, spelling errors, and ESPECIALLY unprovoked hate speech.
@Darrin Robinson you have talked in many circles, contradicted yourself multiple times, rambled on without making a coherent statement, presumed to know things that you are obviously clueless about, lashed out at me with ignorance and hate because I apparently offended you, and somehow managed confused me so much that I feel dizzy! I cant even piece together enough to deem a comprehensive reply. I value my time, effort, and sanity more than it will take for me re-read your comments, try to decipher whatever point you are really trying to make, or attempt to put them into cohesive thoughts. I mean, you have shockingly stated twice that you dont believe in ANYTHING. That is such an abstract thought that I cant even grasp the concept of it. I've never met a person who doesn't believe that anything. That must mean nothing has ever existed in time or space except you. Like, do you live so far out in deep space that there is nothing except you, alone and floating around as the only thing that exists or has ever existed? If that's the case, then perhaps you can take some solace in the knowledge that I'm nothing more than your imagination. By using your "no belief" logic, none of these comments are even real and are nothing more than a delusion you are experiencing. All of this, everything ever created or imagined, including the delusion of a planet, and the concept of life, humans, emotions, language, and every thought, sound, or image you have ever experienced are not real. They cant possibly exist because YOU dont believe in "anything". I however believe that I exist and I know that im am not floating in a void of nothingness. I wish you clarity of mind, that you discover something to "believe in", and that another being comes into your existence by somehow finding it way to you. What a lonely life you must have to live. 🙁🤷🏻♀️
Prince and Michael Jackson. We had two unique human beings and unparalleled talents, at the same time. How lucky were we ?!
Jackson was a fantastic singer and dancer. Prince was a musical genius. Writer/composer/producer/arranger, singer, drummer, bassist, keyboardist, and an incredible guitarist.
@@NoLefTurnUnStoned. Don’t forget writer (for MJ) too. His solo compositions are some of his most celebrated songs: Billie Jean, Beat It, Don’t Stop ‘til You Get Enough, Bad, Smooth Criminal, The Way You Make Me Feel, Wanna Be Startin’ Something. The list of the classic songs written without Co-writers is endless. Completely agree with you about Princes’s exceptional multi instrumentalism though. He was incredible in that respect. I think Prince’s quality control could be a bit questionable though. He released A LOT of stuff, much of it not that great (especially after Diamonds & Pearls) whereas Mike’s quality control was far tighter. Just my opinion of course ☺️

ann landers Wait, aren't you an MJ fan? I've seen you in the comments on MJ vids. As a fellow MJ fan AND a Prince fan too, I have to ask, why insult a fellow artist? I don't see the point. I don't understand how a straight talker can be deemed unusual. The man said what he said. He was just hypnotic and intelligent... he was an original and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that!

He had one quality so unpopular today - humility. It seems to me he doesn't see a point in talking much about himself, he is interested in art, he liked his work, quality.
I get what you mean. I don't think it's about humility as much as it's about being private. Today celebrities - for a plethora of reasons but mainly, I guess, because they lack real talent or creativity to talk about something else - overshare their personal life and people or fans are way more obsessed about it (g.e: social media hysteria)
That’s the first time I see someone say that Prince is humble lmao. He was a lot of things but certainly not humble!
@Kiersten J He was confident in his art, and proud of it, yes. But he was not into ego tripping, posting his face everywhere etc. He wanted people to talk about his music, not about him personally. That's what I consider humble. Plus, he worked hard, very hard on his music.

It's not that they didn't understand him. Both of them are world class interviewers. They were just asking what a lot of the audience thought about him. @@girl123boy456 you should watch some other interviews, too. All show somewhat different parts of his character. Also, I'm sure you probably know by now since your post was months ago, but most of us are fairly certain he only died bc he took what we now call counterfeit drugs. Pain medication that has been created to look identical to the drug you intend to take, but one that has been made by murderers mixing fentanyl with the wanted drug and "pressing" it into a mold that looks like the real pills. If you aren't used to high levels of opioids, taking fentanyl can kill you. No proof of that, of course, but in my opinion, his death was some degree of homicide.

Very low key and introspective. Hendrix and Coltrane had some of the same qualities. All genius
Cheers to that
Very vain I'd say
The name (Prince) didn't "get" him famous; his talent did.
Yes, I agree.
But his talent Came From Below
I was surprised to find out that PRINCE is his real name...
he was so soft spoken, bless him tons🙏🏽
The ultimate master Of his own craft. I love Prince when he first came out with his music. I love him after he passed away. His music will endure many, many, many, many generations. His talent was a gift to us to be able to see someone as brightest as a star could be. Rest in peace prince
Men everywhere try their hardest to be hard and masculine and live up to an image. What makes a man is exuding the self confidence that comes with self acceptance. Prince wasn't afraid of any part of himself. He is a role model for masculinity in my view, whether or not those who are inspired by him are themselves a little feminine like him. That would be to miss the point.
ray h. Bruce lee
@Mebrice Depace and this is why I'm so sexually attracted to him and obsessed with him now lol
Cool description bravo
It's funny how so many focus on his level of masculinity but accept without question the reasoning to why other rock legends are even less masculine! No one questions Marilyn Manson, Kiss, Mick Jagger, Ozzie Osbourne or David Bowie to name a few. It always baffled me how they were never coined as feminine? Prince is much more masculine than half the guys in his genre! I have my opinions why he is seen in different views than the others. But...🤐✌
@Jesse Montgomery you got proof he took drugs on stage.
I love his voice, he's so calming in the way he speaks
+marky24uk A true Minnesotan. Bob Dylan is similar in that respect.
absolutely!
+marky24uk Addiction to pain killers will do that....
+North Eagle Media Fuck off.
*****....._"autopsy"_? My comment was merely a gelastic retort to the original post as to why he speaks the way he does. Your comments on the other hand shows how little you really know about the man...
Great interview and Prince is so respectful. Missed.
Still can't believe he's gone. 💔
Prince was a good-looking dude. Very Angelic.
Gay
@@theoldmanriverwalk9472 How is it gay? Prince is beautiful like a woman. I’m gay, and I’m attracted to men that look like men- huge 250lbs+ men. Straight dudes, if they are going to point out looks on a man, it’s probably more likely to be on a “beautiful” male for their feminine attributes. So I’d say it’s probably just you and me here who are gay.
And he also handles that racist remarks coming from Larry King like a real businessman. I guess when you get use to public abuse & jealousy it just rolls down your sleeves.
@UC7G-232rsD_x48WWFbyIuWw u a pussy if u scared to call someone good looking
@@theoldmanriverwalk9472 you never complimented another dude before? Did you grow up sheltered from people or something?
I just came back to this interview after hearing about his death. R.I.P Larry King
Me too
me too
I watched this video about one or two weeks ago. Crazy
Same.
same
Prince is, for me, the most complete and accomplished artist that has ever lived...
lol.
@@christopherpederson1021 my thoughts exactly
He was born to be a Rock Star. He was so gifted and talented. He is missed.
It seems like the older he got, the sexier he got. His loss hurt me as deeply as Whitney's and MJ's
Beautiful man inside and out
One of the saddest things about aging is seeing your icons die 😢
I miss them too. They were like family.
BwaaaHAA!!!!
Are there sparkles on him or is he just that beautiful? Wow.
Sparkles and Beauty
Helena James right 😭😭💜💍
Helena James yes. around this time he was always wearing glitter. find the video of him singing with Cheryl crow... The glitter is overwhelming lol
both.
It was the style at the time. Rick James used a lot of glitter too. Style wise that time period had a lot of bold trends like huge shoulder pads. Huge hair lots of make up. It was pure fun.
❤OMG!! HOW have I missed this for 24 years!! Profoundly wonderful! Exquisite!
This guy was so amazing. The rest for L. King. How calm he was. How humble he was. Total genius in so many ways. And physically incredible attractive.
This is the prettiest sexiest man that ever lived.
Girl!!!! I say the same thing!!!
Yesss!
yes
yes he is
+OLUCHI OLUWASEYI LOL, but I will admit that Larry King looks like a turd next to Prince.
Prince had such a genuine child like shyness during this interview but he was straight forward and patient with Larry King
He wasn't childlike or shy.
Technically Prince is a Gemini and they are childlike and quiet when need be for the most part.
This guy deserved a lot more years on planet earth 🌍❤️☝️🎅✝️
It's still a mystery of how Prince died in an elevator alone. Where were his bodyguards? From Ms. Harper Stacey.
People can be kind and cruel. I only wish with all his wisdom, he did what Tina Turner did, found solace elsewhere and revisit the states when he felt moved to do so and find peace performing or teaching. He was one of the most incredibly talented musician/vocalist on the planet!
@@ENYPolyglot He had physical problems, can’t remember what it was. Maybe a hip problem, if I remember correctly. He refused surgery. Think that was years before he passed. He claimed when younger that he didn’t do drugs, or wasn’t into drugs. Maybe he became dependent on opioids later, ‘cause of physical illness. He didn’t seem like a recreational drug user
@@harperstacey9604 yep
@@harperstacey9604 he didn’t have his body guards around him inside his own home.
Prince was so well spoken, a talented song writter and a guinness musician. Who knew Larry King was this cool?!
Genius
What's really astonishing here is how well mannered and sober sighted Prince is. What a huge breath of fresh air to see a rock star act this way.
Marylyn Manson, Zappa, Are two that come to mind. Bowie... also,
@@morbidmanmusic John Lennon, Paul McCartney, LL Cool J, Snoop, a lot of legends were like this.
He wasn't a drug addict and he was vegan. Drugs were never his thing. He despised drugs and there were no drugs on his tours or rehearsals. Unfortunately and ironically drugs took him out, led by his hip pain. So sad.
He said “well mannered and sober” about Marilyn Manson, you clearly haven’t seen his interviews and are one of those soccer moms who thinks he worships Satan. Grow up lady.
@@CourtneyShanebaloney. He was out of touch with reality.
His voice is so soothing !
Adm Edward a
I came here after watching some crap re our "president" to soothe my soul.
Reminds me somewhat of Marilyn Manson
People don't realize how incredibly talented prince was
What the hell are you talking about. He is one of the most renowned performers and musicians of all time. What people... ? Ones who never heard music? YOU must be the "people" you talk about.
What a presence! Exudes kindness and modesty. One of a kind and there will never be one like him. RIP Prince❤❤❤
I hate when people would call him "not normal". He was so normal it was ridiculous. He was a damn boss as an artist. We all know why he changed his name, to divorce his record company and put out his music without being tied to them. He found a loophole, that was brilliant, abnormal people don't think of that. RIP Prince Rogers Nelson
man...i could listen to that man's voice for hours on end...his voice was so soothing. and it's always nice listening to those who are clearly intelligent and have something interesting to say. great talking voice, great singing voice!
+wangson AGREED!!!
+Susan Clay Agreed!
+wangson Agreed. He came across humble and sincere.
+wangson His voice has a very ASMR quality to it
+wangson and I had no idea Larry King sung!
He listened and answered intently…such a lovely creative bright human ❤
So cool. Prince was super chill he knew how powerful calmness is ❤
Man, Prince’s voice is so damn soothing!
Listen to that voice. He was a giant walking pussy magnet. Wish I had that voice. Then I would be sorted. :-D
@Frost his voice isn’t feminine lmao
@Frost even if that were true (it's not), the man still got more ass than a toilet seat. Under all the hair and eyeliner and heels, that man had SWAG, and it oozed off of him. Loved him my whole life.
@Frost Baby, we gotta work on your game. Lol
@Frost make a girl blush why don't you lol 😊
I seriously feel like someone I personally knew passed... His presence on the world was something very special. RIP. :'(
+Justin Mccluskey I haven't stopped feeling the gut punch of all of this yet. It's like surreal. I know I didn't 'know' him, but his music weaved a fabric into my life that intersected in everything that I loved about him and his music. That music got to the soul of me. I love this interview because it truly personifies everything I thought of, felt, and believed him to be. :'(
Justin Mccluskey His death hurt my heart so bad along with Tupac
Ikr...I didn't expect it to be so intense, deep or so personal. Like REAL grief❤
He was such a beautiful soul 💜💐 🎵 we still miss you Prince !
Just wow. His music is timeless. Such an inspirational soul and the intelligence displayed here reflects in all his music. A true gift.
“No sir” “Yes sir” This is a good boy who grew up to be a great man. ♥️
This was a good boy wow
@@renotheson1429 I thought the same thing when I saw that statement.
I'm in my early 40's and I'm from the Midwest. I know several people who have met him. Not a bad word about him. I have yet to hear a negative story about him. I constantly hear of his humility and generosity. The love poured out to him is from a life well lived. Love, intelligence, hard work, spirituality, creative, talented, integrity, humble. When you have a beautiful spirit it shows on the outside. He was truly one of God's chosen few. Thank you for the lifetime of music and lyrics with content and meaning. May you fly with the angels.
Your beautiful to me sweet Caramel Diva
I’m sorry but Prince was not humble at all. He was very talented and gifted yes but had a very big ego.
@@Supernenaaa888 Exactly!!! He may have shared but he had a huge ego most "geniuses" do.
god's chosen? omg. what means god's chosen :D we are all god's chosen people stupid cow
Caramel Diva he was sweet kid, fame made him a bit of an jerk at first, yet it was hard to handle, he had to focus, then as he got older he came back into his humble, kind self, I find this to be more honest, in real life with Prince..... love him, a musical genius and an Artist that cant be denied
Prince was a master at being chill. No one has more swag in speaking softly than Prince. The man could literally speak and women’s panties would fall to the floor.
