The Audi 8V MQB platform cars are known for an awful creaking sunroof problem. Many people have gone to the dealer and tried to get this fixed without any luck. Some people have even had to have their whole sunroof replaced, and some folks have decided that they just have to live with it. Well, you don’t. Get yourself a t20 torx bit and save yourself a huge headache.

Q7 CREAKING: Thank you for this video as I was trying to fix my Audi Q7's creaking sunroof. This didn't show how to adjust the Q7, but the premise was the same. My creaking was caused the friction in between the front & rear panel on the panoramic sun roof. There are 8 screws, 4 on each side on the railing underneath the back panel glass (like the screws in your video you showed). MY FIX: I retracted the front panel w/ the button to relieve pressure between the two panels, then loosened the 8 screws using the star shaped bit, then with my hand I pushed up on the back panel (there is a 1/4" or so the panel can move up and down w/ screw adjustments), retightened the screws, and lowered the front panel back into the closed position. This fixed the annoying creaking. THANK YOU! CONCEPT: You are creating pressure between two points of contacts (front & rear panel of sun roof). If those contacts are loose and flex, they will rub and create noise. Tightening that contact stops the movement and any creaking. MY RESEARCH: I looked everywhere for a solution - lubing the rubber seal all around the glass (didn't work), installing felt tape on the plastic clasps on the sun roof railing (didn't try to do this one) & lubed the rubber foot that presses down on the wind screen at the front of the sun roof (didn't work), removing the wind screen (didn't try). This was a $525 bill at Audi, which I didn't proceed with. Thank you again for posting this. It was crazy to read all the unsolved issues with the sun roof and how many times I read a dealership replaced the sunroof outright.
The screws are facing down in the frame?
@@ADS3000 If you are inside the Audi Q7, the screws are facing across to the other side of the car. From inside, look up at the edges of the back panel glass and you should see them on either side of the interior mounting sunroof rail. Our Audi Q7 is 2018, in case they changed the design.
@kevinrust i dont see them. Im in the backseat looking across the vehicle left to right. All i see is the black rubber trim. Even in the front looking left to right i just see the rail
@@ADS3000My guess is that when we took the Audi in to the dealership, they removed the trim piece and left the screws exposed. I tried to find a video to see what it looked like before without any luck. I did find this Audi video on a A4 where he removed a piece of sunroof trim exposing the screws that looked similar to mine. I didn't remove any trim, so I can't speak to how it comes off. OMG THANK YOU THIS WORKED on my 2016 S3! It was driving me crazy because it used to rattle every once in a while and then it started to rattle almost constantly.

My screw was little loose so I tightened it and the bad sound is gone. Easy fix. Good video thanks 😊

I own a 2020 S3 and I was facing the same issue. I got the complete roof assembly along with the glass replaced under warranty. After nearly a year I got the same problem again. I thought it was something I needed to live with. But damn! These 2 screws fixed the issue. I used to hear the squeak even when the road is not bumpy. But now complete silence. Does even Audi mechanics know about this? Because the first time I took my car, they couldn't figure out what was wrong and replaced the entire roof. That would have been so expensive.

Dude you are a literal life saver! My GTI developed this horrendous creaking noise and I could barely stand to drive it. This was the easiest fix ever and not a sound out of the sunroof anymore! Thank you! UPDATE: the creaking came back after a couple minutes on the road. When you say push the glass towards the frame do you mean to push down on the sunroof itself?
I think it depends per car, actually. For me, I pushed the glass down, as my screws were so loose that the glass had risen up, if that makes sense. I just tried to center the screws in the channel as best I could.

did it work bro? today my son opened the sunroof on highway and then he closed it,we were travelling at 100km/h. now im hearing rattle noise when i hit bad shapes streets.i also see that when it is closed, it is not totally flush with the ceiling at the middle part.
Diego Alvarez I’ve had no issues since I fixed it. I open my sunroof pretty frequently. If there was a problem it’s easy to fix, and I bet you could even put some loctite on the screws.

2019 S3 saloon owner with a rattle coming from the passenger side at the rear - just did this fix and it worked a charm. My only comment would be that I used a T25 rather than a T20 Torx head, so check which is the best fit for your car.

T20 will do the job but the correct one is T25. If you tight it hard with T20 you may damage the screw head
Have same type of panoramic roof on my Passat 8 limousine. But I’ve noticed that gap under those screws isn’t equal on both sides.
Lots of discussion about this on forums with felt tape etc.. if the rattle goes away with a tiny little upward movement of the sunroof with the switch then adjusting like this will solve the problem. I moved mine up about 1mm and could see from outside the car that the right side was lower than the left. When I loosened the adjustment screw the tension on the glass was relieved and it straightened itself out, then I tightened it back up. No rattle, tiny adjustment. I have an A3 and a MK7 GTI, the VW was the one that rattled, same sunroof.
Didn’t work for my gti 2018
Right side seems to be upper than left side, I move both sides up 1-2mm and the sound increase, I’ll try moving in the other direction
@@mingotor4389 this fix is for big rattling the other thing that's prescribed in the VW technical guides is krytox paste lubricant for the rubber seals. i bought some and it took care of the rest of the small 'rattling' sounds which are actually coming from the seals sticking to each other. need an extremely tiny amount to spread around, it's very thick, don't get it on the glass or paint. totally worth the money and few days wait, don't bother trying any other lubricant it's a waste of time. the technical manual also says to clean the seals first with a special fluid, turns out its just rubbing alcohol (isopropanol) www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PLWVHK4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Interesting video BUT, I discovered that the creak comes from the rubber pads at the front of the glass section. These pads force the wind deflector shut causing the creak when the roof is shut. A dab of red rubber grease on both pads eliminates the creak completely. I think that by adjusting the angle of the roof in your video alters the way the pads sit on the wind deflector arms when closed. This creak drove me mad for three years, and I finally stopped it!!

yeah same goes on most panoramic roofs lube the seals with silicon grease takes the rattles away

Creak came back again after greasing the pads so I took the roof lining out and tightened all the securing bolts which helped. What I should have done was to lower the whole sunroof unit and add double sided tape between the roof and sunroof unit and then refitted it.

Sorted mine, passangers side was all the way down while the drivers side was just above midway. My window sits slightly lower now and realised that the glass on the rear should be around 1mm higher than the roof. I'll adjust it later as I've got to pull the glass to clean and lubricate the rails
my 18 s3 just started having some creaks in the sunroof over rough roads mostly (18k miles). i figured it might be due to slightly below freezing temps and maybe some ice build up, but im definitely going to give this a try later today

Hi! I have a 2014 Q3 and it doesn't have these screws at the back. I have a rattle but it stops if I pull down on the sun shade screen. Do you have any idea how to fix this? Mechanic said there is no solution but its driving me crazy! Thanks in advance!
Thank you for this tip, will be trying it later today. Any chance there is a alternate solution to repairing a leaking sunroof like this ? The frame had hairline cracks. Audi says I need to replace frame and glass. That's a hectic option.
I’m not sure. Can’t hurt to try, but I’m not sure if your leaks are due to this.

I don't, sorry. That sounds like it just needs replacing.

Sunroof wont come down. It makes clicking sounds as I move middle lever for 2018 Audi S-Line. Any suggestions on how to fix or force close? Thank you.
Definitely would not force it. Sounds like it may be a motor or rail issue that you'd want a dealer or other mechanic to look at.
Friend is still without anynoise?? Your tip has to do be done in the driver and passenger side too? Or just rear side?
Starting to get some noise now after about a year. A simple re-tighten should fix, though.

@@73bennyj I solved my problem. In my case, the problem was in the sunroof lining. I went to VW dealer and they fixed for me.

I have a VW Arteon 2019, which has the same roof construction as that Audi, but my screws were already tightly screwed. Still having that creaking sound, that's almost like broken piece of glass grinding into another glass

@@zigasobocan3597 nope, seems like applying some lubrication along the rails, where the roof slides in, does help a little bit. Overall, that's just a structural weakness, that absorbs all the shock from the road, and the mechanics there seem to weaken over time because of this. Therefore the creaks
@@Sartheris I agree. Cant believe VAG group still havent fixed this panoramic roof problem all those years. I thought only older models were having this problems...I have silicone oil/grease all over but it still rattling when driving on uneven bumbps/holes😒
Its not about them being tight... it seems you need to loosen them, then push down the sunroof, then tighten them again.

Nick, were you having the creaking also when the sunroof was open? I guess this could be a potential differential diagnosis as to whether this fix will work and if it's related solely to the sunroof? Just purchased a 2018 RS3 and 'creak over curb' is present but I'm pretty sure I've gotten it when the sunroof was open also? Any thoughts? Or anyone else. Really don't want to rip open the headliner.
I hardly ever drove with the roof open, so I’m not really sure. I’ve since traded in my RS3 for an RS5. I wish I could be more help!
My glass is actually fading or peeling the clear coat I guess on the sides, not the part that slides back . Anybody else have this problem? Don't know what to do for a fix

Probably. I'm in the US so I've never seen a Leon, but I think it's the same chassis as all the other MQB cars?

Mine's an Audi A4 from 2012... the problem i have is when i take a hard turn left or right i have this 'knocking' sound... sunroof up or down, knock remains! Any helpful tips? Thnx.

I just did this on my rs3 and after I centered both screws in the middle and locked it down tight my roof will not close. It would close temporary and than immediately open again in the tilt function. After I loosened up the screws a bit the roof closes again.
But could you fix the noise?.. I mean, after putting those screws in the middle but after loosening them, I have a RS3 Sedan of 2019 and I have the same problem im thinking about trying it but after reading your comment im not quite sure about doing it..
That's odd. I'm not sure why that would happen, unless there was some other problem that doesn't have a relationship to these screws. Something caught somewhere else, or a motor issue perhaps?
There are 6 screws holding the glass frame. Only adjusting 2 rear ( or front ) could lead to a bind for some and the resistance on the motor will prevent the close. I would loosen middle screws sightly before loosening & moving the front or back screws. My RS3 creaks and the dealer removed the glass and frame and it still happens crossing uneven ground during body flex. Dealer suggested headliner removal as next steps to check frame screws & apply felt tape to fasteners - TSB’s from other models. I’m holding off, nervous to have seats, pillars, headliner all coming out because I’m OCD.
@@rodcollier I'm right there with you Rod, just got a 2018 RS3 about 6 weeks ago and I've noticed this 'creak' over curbs. But the thought of undoing headliner, etc....that was put in by the guy at the factory that does 120 of them per day, vs Jimmy mechanic that's gonna thumb his way through it????? But if it gets worse???? Might need to try this trick. I'm interested if Fish N' Chips did eventually fix it?

When loosening the screws, should I push the glass up or down?
Depends on where it's sitting - for me, the glass was up, so I needed to push down to center it.
But my sunroof won't open what should I do
I'd suggest taking it to the dealer or a shop that knows these cars very well. That sounds like a more serious problem with the motor or something else.

How does this affect the rattle? Does it only fix the creaking?
Fixes any rattle as well, the rattle is due to the glass & mounting points bouncing up and down against the frame.
