We Did a Fly-In Moose Hunt in Newfoundland | Eastbound Overland - E.9 - Off-Grid Cabin & Floatplane
Finally the heavy wind stopped and we boarded our floatplane early in the morning for our flight into a remote off-grid cabin in Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula. The cabin is owned by a hunting outfitter, Portland Creek Outfitters. The flight was beautiful and the kids enjoyed the views. We unloaded the bush plane and hauled our gear up to the off-grid cabin. Noon, I was out hunting. After putting a good amount of effort in, calling and trekking to different spots, even crossing a river, we were unsuccessful. Jamie pointing to a mountain top across the lake and said he wanted to head up there to try the next morning. I was game and after the trek, we set up in a spot with great vantage points and started calling. After some time we managed to call in a bull and ultimately we were successful. Hauling it down from the mountain top through dense bush and across deep bogs was a real challenge but we got back to the boat, leaving another load for the following day. While I hunted, my with Tori went on a hike with the kids, copped some wood and just hung out at camp. Delicious food was on the plate too and we enjoyed fried cod, cod aux gratin and bacon and eggs for breakfast. We were the last people in the camp that season.

  • I've always wanted to go on a float plane, and this really gave me a feel for what it would be like. Poor North! You know just how young he is when he gets on Jim's lap when he's scared. I'm sad to see the moose kill, but live in northern Alberta where I know a moose means a family eats all winter long. Great footage of trekking on the moose hunt. You definitely worked hard for this. Can't wait for next week.

It was nice to see your guide & how he helps aide you throughout the hunt. Very nice & inviting camp. The fish dinner looked delicious! Cod is my favorite. Looking forward to Gross More National Park. Loved the morning waking up. Really enjoyed this video. That was cute North looking out the window then jumped up on your lap. Just like a kid. So precious were those smiles of Wesley & Hudson. Sure hated the camera breaking for you. In hopes all 4 of you have a wonderful weekend!

  • The firm texture and rich pleasant taste is top notch grade a first class in my experiences. I love to make spaghetti sauce with big moose balls (coarse ground) noodles and garlic bread. I make several extra loafs for the next day, slice, pile the balls inside, bit of sauce then heaping mozzarella ( jalapeno slice) wrap each in aluminum foil and bake for an hour. Moose doesn't need it but it's perfectly fine if you want to incorporate 10% sheep and goat. Never forget the vino. Another favorite is to thin slice, salt pepper, mustard onion pickle, roll tight, toothpick it, bake an hour. Pan gravy over spatzels. Mama nennt das Roulade.. Great work Jim.

  • Props to your self, digitally documented & narrated filmography. It was a straight forward, shot from the hip & generally down to earth presentation. With all the generality of hard work, and no bull shit or hyped up self promotion / religious eulogy. No offense meant to anyone that way. I like this type of genuine truthful & almost bedtime/ campfire story. You and your big adventures are just so real & appealing to kindered ( salt of the earth) kinda people! Yup, ( I'm a fan;) after only one episode! Now that's impressive 👏

  • Excellent video...I've seen many moose over the years throughout my travels--quite a few in Alaska, but also in Maine. I don't have a problem with hunting moose, caribou, elk, or deer (as regulated) primarily for meat. What I do have a problem with is sport trophy hunting for big game apex predators such as bears, tigers, & lions.
