  • Born and raised in SF! Good for the crabbers. There is always a “hold out” because the crabbers get lowballed for their catch…say a few dollars a pound. The mark up is huge! Pay them for their product! FOB is the best! 10 a pound is absolutely reasonable. If not the Chinese markets have the best price. Deal direct and cut out the middle man!

    • Fisherman's Wharf in SF is a tourist trap and a ripoff. Was there 10 years ago, and they were charging $30 for a dead (i.e. cooked) dungeness crab. Could not been much over 1 1/2 lbs. It was way more expensive than out East (where I live) and the dungeness crab is from the West coast - go figure. If you want crab at a good price, avoid this tourist trap and go to Chinatown on Stockton, where you will find the best prices hands down.

And these fishermen need to stay in business. So what, if you think it is a buck or two higher? When these guys stay in business longer, we can expect the inflation to make its price a lot more attractive.

  • Lobster and crab, while delicious, suffer mightily -being thrown into pots of boiling water. They hurt! don't encourage your children to participate in dropping them into pots and poking them so they don't try to get out. Teaches them that it is ok to inflict cruelty on animals. You wouldn't do it to your dog (or would you?) Happy New Year all.

    • I believe their exoskeleton don’t have connective nerves like our skin that can feel boiling water, also why they can live in cold waters. Crabs and lobsters are known to detach their claw as a defensive mechanism.

Wait, now I think about it, this is in San Francisco. I don’t think it is worth risking getting my car windows smashed trying to help the local business.
