  • Hey Thekingofrandom, just thought that I should let you know that kale wool releases particles into the air when heated that can cause permanent lung damage, you're supposed to cover it with refractory cement.

    • Elmoe boi Just use a respirator when using your foundry. The hazard its that Kao wool breaks down and sheds small fibers which are hazardous after prolonged exposure. A hobbyist has little to fear. I do work in foundries and I usually only see them wearing particle masks when cutting the insulation. If you are worried wear a dust mask any time you do anything to disturb the kao wool.

  • I feel like every time the backyard foundry is improved, it moves further and further from the original intent of the project, that it could be made with relatively inexpensive and easily accessible materials. The most logical step next would be to make a full kiln/forge and forgo the bucket.

    @cyprusmiraque@cyprusmiraque5 жыл бұрын
    • I agree and disagree though. Because even though you have your “entry level” foundry to be accessible for everybody, you should also look for upgrades if you could do any to your tools or processes as you experience new things. That’s the only way you could get better or further in your own experiments.

  • I think you may have issues with the heat/flame traveling through the gaps between the bricks, heating the bucket below the wool line more than expected. You should put kale wool all the way to the base bricks to prevent this. Or try to compact the bricks to eliminate the gap. The wool will likely last years since most of the direct flame will impact the working side of the brick meaning the ceramic blanket will only deal with latent non-direct flame heat.

  • You could've used a circular saw with a concrete cutting blade or a grinder with a diamond cutting wheel to makes it easier on yourself when cutting on fire bricks since I've have used them before and they came out perfect with the grinder with a diamond cutting wheel.

  • Why didn't you soak the bricks before you cut them to cut down on the dust. This dust is supposed to be very bad for your lungs as well based on other vids I've seen on it.

    • Because if they dont get dried properly using a painfully slow burn in process to slowly heat up the foundry the water will quickly turn to steam and make the foundry explode violently

  • Instead of using the kaowool, you guys should just use firebrick, cementing it to the sides and lid using refractory cement! Refractory cement will hold it together, fill in any gaps, and create a long lasting foundry.

  • Fire brick is also commonly used in the lining of fireboxes on a steam locomotives. As much heat as your foundry puts out imagine that daily with only a few hours between fire drops which kept the ash pans clean.
