This Roubo Workbench is one of the most complex pieces Ive ever made and by no means was that intentional. I though it would be done in a matter of weeks yet it took two and a half months of non stop construction. Not to mention the amount of time planning and editing. But all the features turned out as I'd hoped if not better.
This bench takes full advantage of the standard tail vise and leg vise but also incorporates a moxon vise, shoulder vice and pattern makers vise, as well as a pop up gap stop and a hidden wheel system which isn't common on a bench like this.
Even though this workbench is quite over the top, as mentioned in the video this bench was an exploration of ideas as well as an enjoyable process in which I'll always remember. Shop furniture doesn't always have to be quick and to the point, it can also be an experience.
One of my main objectives with this bench is to hopefully trigger ideas within yourself to maybe incorporate into your own workflow .
As always thank you so much for your support here on KZhead. The fact that you even watch my videos means I can continue to make more unique builds and share them with you. And if you haven’t already, please consider subscribing as this will help my videos to get pushed out to more and more people.
Now you hear me talk about Patreon a lot. It’s actually the main way that I can financially support this channel and continue to provide free videos here on KZhead. • In art school, on my first day at a drawing class, my professor asked us to open our brand new sketch books and draw a large X on the first sheet. This was to take away the stigma of the virgin quality of the paper; it was meant to be drawn on, explored! This may sound sadistic but you should place a hammer blow on the bench top to exorcise the fear of damaging it. You are a brilliant designer and a master craftsman. Keep up the good work!

    @jimtownsend5352@jimtownsend53526 ай бұрын
    • I was so worried about damaging the top when I built my bench that i was scared to use it for a while. Made it completely useless. Then, one day a chisel slipped and took out a chunk of the top. I was sad at first but then happy because I couldn't actually use the bench! Good advice here

      @jerryhoogeveen@jerryhoogeveen6 ай бұрын
    • Terrible advice! Let it happen organically. Work like you work because, although your woodworking might appear otherwise, you're not perfect, and it will happen at some point. In the meantime, enjoy your creation, because it is a thing of beauty! Well done.

      @Hirokiji@Hirokiji5 ай бұрын
    • @@Hirokijiyou say that as if the CAD software he is using isn’t a tool that requires skill and craftsmanship to use? Using CAD is equivalent to mastering and simplifying pencil and paper design. Kind of a bozo take to say using CAD diminishes this project in any way.

    • The brass rods in the moxon vise might be a weak point. You may wish to consider hardened stainless steel rods to resist the high bending force, attaching them to the moveable face of the vise with hardened steel shoulder bolts that go through the rods and then a fair way into the moveable face. This joint needs to resist a large amount of torque.

It has great storytelling, pacing, great shots, great audio. The workbench, of course is a masterpiece. The upsell to to his Patreon is done tastefully, and it seems like something that has a genuine large amount of value to participate in. What’s not to love?

  • As you said, a workbench is an extension of you and your craftsmanship, and this is by far the most extraordinary bench I've ever seen, im blown away with ideas you've used and will certainly include them when I build my own.

  • Your sense of joy has the power to create an ocean of admiration... the passion you have for carpentry and creating unique and unrepeatable objects [even if you repeat it will always have a distinctive detail, I believe] is impossible not to be perceived by who watches your videos. Lucky of those who can have a piece created by you... I'm excited to see the new desk. Accept a hug from the antipodes, Lisbon, Portugal, EU

  • there are many, many videos of how to build workbenches...not one of them comes close to this. This is art, thank you so much for taking the time to make not only the bench, but the video to show us. Your skill is at a level I will never achieve since that is not really my goal, but in the same way I can appreciate the world's best athletes, or artists, or musicians...I will appreciate what you do.

  • Man, this bench is absolutely insane. I've just started getting into some (very) amateur level woodworking and am loving it. I just built my first workbench and was happy with the result. But you take everything to a whole other level. Super clean and an absolutely stunning piece brother!

  • From the design of the old Disston hand saws to the Studley tool case, woodworkers have always expressed their love of craft in their tools. Design doesn't detract from our tools, it improves everything we do with them. You've done a beautiful job with your bench, and I learned a few things along the way (as I am sure you did.) Thank you, and congratulations on a job well done!

  • It’s beautiful!! Totally overkill, but that’s what makes it fantastic! I’m not a woodworker, and had no clue what most of the fancy elements were for, but when you demonstrated each item, it all made so much sense, and makes you wonder why these things aren’t standard on a work bench (except perhaps: cost! Haha) Only the 2nd video I’ve seen from you, but I’m glad you have the work bench of your dreams! It’ll make everything so so smoothly from now on! ☺️

  • Wow! Excellent and inspiring build! I'm tired of seeing the same old ultra-utilitarian get 'er done videos on KZhead. This build as with all your other ones is refreshing. It amazes me how many individuals, including craftsmen, devalue aesthetics, seeing function as a paramount over form. I see the opposite. An artifact with little to no form is a mere commodity devoid of humanness.
