A bicycle ride in the world's longest bicycle tunnel (purpose-built), called Fyllingsdalstunnelen in Bergen, Norway (September 2023). Highlights include a 3 km cycling and pedestrian tunnel, connections to protected bike lanes, public transit as well as artwork and colourful lighting.
This 3 km tunnel opened in April 2023 and cuts through Løvstakken mountain. Both sides of Fyllingsdalstunnelen provide connections to protected bike lanes, light rail, residential and shopping areas. This tunnel connects two neighborhoods (Fyllingsdalen and Mindemyren) and makes cycling and walking both safer, faster (shorter and flatter) and protected from the elements. Fyllingsdalstunnelen is open daily from 5:30am to 11:30pm.
Due to the length of the tunnel there are multiple rest stops with seating, distance indicators, emergency phones and security cameras. There is also colourful lighting, artwork and the tunnel is temperature controlled (7 degrees Celsius). The pedestrian side of the tunnel includes blue rubber flooring.
The AAA network of protected bike lanes and separated pathways connecting downtown Bergen with this tunnel is easy to navigate and can be cycled in approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
Our ride begins by heading East from Fyllingsdalen terminal, just beside the Oasen Senter (shopping mall). Next we cross the light rail tracks and enter Fyllingsdalstunnelen. As we continue through the tunnel we see dynamic lighting, clear delineation between cycling and pedestrian paths, and signs indicating how far it is to each end of the tunnel. Each rest stop is worth stopping at to see the artwork and do a little bike watching. As we exit the tunnel we pass a light rail stop (Kristianborg), bike racks, seating and a connection to a two-way protected bike lane.
