This is the updated Hyundai i30 N, and Mat’s about to find out if it has what it takes to stand out against competitors such as the Golf GTI, Civic Type R and Octavia vRS!
So what’s new? Well although you may have the same engine as before (a 2-litre 4 cylinder turbo petrol), the power output has been increased! The new i30 N now puts down 280hp and 392Nm of torque.
That’s not all that’s changed, though! There are a few subtle exterior tweaks, and it comes with all the usual hot hatch design cues, including red brake callipers, a roof spoiler and larger exhaust tips. It’s also got a new tail light design as well!
On the inside, it’s all very much the same as before, although you’ll find new seats (naturally embossed with an N symbol) along with a larger infotainment screen.
The price starts from £34,000, so is it the must-have hot hatch of 2022? You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

@@andypaul999 Agreed. Boring like my 911
@@andypaul999 I see. But personally, I disagree because Hyundai is one of the car brands that: (1) comes up with bold designs for staple ordinary models like the Elantra, Tucson, IONIQ 5 etc (2) still offers the purists' choice of manual transmissions in a timeframe where most major car manufacturers are swerving away from this decision. For example, Subaru had steered clear from making a new WRX STI and Mitsubishi had abandoned the Evo altogether.
Korean?
I recently bought a 2022 manual i30N here in Australia. It so much fun and mildly juvenile with its pops and bangs which I love! At the equivalent of 27,000 pounds its good value here as well. Great car!

I think it would be a good idea for a drag race video, the new DCT Hyundai i30N vs DCT Renault Megane RS Trophy vs DCT Golf GTI Clubsport vs Honda Type R, just to see if the extra 20hp from the type R is enough to beat the DCT and launch control from the oder cars in a straight line.

In my opinion, this hothatch is one of the best hothatch today, it still makes those popcorns and in addition it may not have the manual gearbox, but the new 8-speed was well made and is quite fast! It was a good facelift on the part of Hyundai to this I30N

As someone who regularly drives this car… the wow factor of N Mode never really goes away. You do need a pretty good road if you fancy continued use of your spine, but N Custom can be individualised to your heart‘s content, so that doesn‘t really matter with a quick look around the settings.
Haha I totally agree, ta DCT has been my daily for 6 months and I've just sold it. I love it but it's just not practical for the so many kms a week I'm driving. I think mine's been in N mode for about 60 seconds in the 6 months I've owned it.
is the road noise bad at 70+mph like the he mentioned in the video?
Idk why I love this car so much, it just seems like the perfect hot hatch. Either this, or the 120 N.
I think the i20N is still better. Just because it's smaller and more throwable.
i20n 🔥
Renault Megane RS Trophy!
Because it sounds so goo and has so much character which most cars lack today!!! I feel the same!! I haven't driven the i20N but own a DCT i30N. I'd be interested in driving the 20 to see what it's like...
i20n is more of a traditional, light weight small hot hatch, the i30n is the big brother model that's more livable day to day. If i was 19 again i would go the i20n, but im 34 now so i guess the i30n is the go. lol
I live in Australia and I recently moved interstate from Melbourne to Adelaide, I actually found having that strut bar helped with keeping heavier items from sliding down the slight slope of the folded down seats, and it kind of helps splits the cabin into two compartments but carrying bulkier and longer items was a pain….
I bought a load of stuff from IKEA and got it all in so it's definitely useable. And I have the fastback version where the roof is lower. Also, I've been told that the brace comes out but mine is absolutely bolted in. Can't get rid of it even if I wanted to
I’ve been waiting for this for a long time now
Had one of these for about 4 months and it blows my mind how good it is :) Cant help but thrash it every single drive!
Thanks Matt Your reviews are the best You add a magic to it It's addictive

Nice to see a hot hatch review after so many SUVs.

I’ve had this car for a few years now and it’s an absolute maniac on the road but I’ve loved every second. Definitely one of the few genuinely fun cars to drive these days. I’d definitely recommend switching the tyres to Pilot Sport 4S’s asap just so you don’t constantly fear for your life 🤣.
Love these. Even their first attempt at it was a gem.
The sex bot copied your comment.
SR, the i30N still overrated compared to even Accord.
The design is super cool, especially the front view and the wheel rims

I own a i30n 2019 model and absolutely love it for me the best car I have driven so much fun to drive, even if you drive around in ECO model but as soon as you put it into N it just becomes a beast, before I got my i30n I had a 2018 Mini Cooper S which I loved, never thought I would find a car as fun as my Mini but the Hyundai just ticks all the boxes and every you get on the Hyundai is standard whereas with my Mini everything was optional extra
I have one in manual with the N-Lite seats. I love it! Closest you can get to a proper hot hatch but with some modcons
Yep.
The track warranty is a big thing! I remember years ago calling Renault to ask what exactly could be done with 26r if it’s not warrantied for track use.
In germany you get no track warranty.
Yes Mat! This Hyundai i30 N is absolutely insane!
Yep. And epic if you ask me.
💤💤
It annoys me to no end, when doing 0-60 in a car that needs an up-shift at 57-58mph! Sometimes, it's quicker to just run it into the red-line, rather than shift.
when fully warm id should reach 60 just before the limiter but trust me i get what you mean.
My ST hits about 104kmh in second (about 61mph)... it doesn't like banging off the limiter much, but definitely shaves a bit of time off.
Youre right i get get to 60 in my 1l eco boost the changes are too early, most of these new cars have a boost when it redlines
This car is not built for 0-60 times
I get what you mean, it has annoyed me as well in some cars but 0-60 times is an artificial measure anyway, it shouldn't really matter. What matters most is how much fun you have going there and shifting is always fun! I'd always prefer that compared to very long gears like in manual Caymans, that spoils the fun.

I myself own this car but in white, absolutely amazing handling to say the least. Also owned a pre facelift one and I tell you what the new one has certainly got a lot more power then the last gen all through the rev range! Trying to put the foot down in first gear is annoying coz of transaction issues (stock tyres tho) but second pulls hard and the exhaust being how it is definently motivates you to drive hard 😂
Get yourself some Michellin PS4s tyres. I put them on my Cupra 290 (similar specs) and it changes the character. Expensive but worth it.
@@JP_RS6 100% would make a huge difference
Yeh I have the original and I swapped my tyres for PS4S and it’s basically a different car. I no longer fear the rain 😂
@@JP_RS6 confirmed, but with a cupra 280. Car becomes a different beast when you can launch it as well.
@@jackmiller2150 Yeah I felt the difference too lol. Really felt it in the corners, launching all us FWD hot hatchs are always going to lose to AWD cars, look at Officially Gassed and the worlds fastest cupra DSG only just getting under 5 secs on 0-60 with 600+HP and a stock Golf R does it in 4.8 seconds or something like that. These tyres really bring the car alive though on country roads and it pulls itself round them countering the natural understeer of FWD cars with help of that Haldex like diff. Wouldn't mind a drive in one of these i30 Ns though. Saying that I wouldnt mind getting away from FWD lol.
I asked for this one to come 😳 and it came 💪🏽
Sounds just fantastic, I let out a hoot during the sound test!
I have the Sport version of this over here in the States, and it's a perfect daily. I believe it was called the SR in the UK before the N models released. It's got a great balanced powertrain, including the turbo 4cyl with the 7spd DCT that gets it around more than well enough to pass traffic easily or get on the highway, but what really puts it above the rest are the features. Heated & cooled seats, full panoramic sunroof, wireless chargers, rear AC, level 2 autonomous driving, great sounding dual exhaust, nice big brakes, 18" wheels it's just a great daily & family hauler. Unfortunately last year they axed this model for our market completely in favor of the Kona 🤢 and the i30 is a superior car in pretty much every way, including interior & cargo space. Either way I love it.
Considered the Elantra N?
I’ve recently bought a pre facelift one and it really does make me smile every drive, such a unique all round car
Was looking forward to the dct review
The sound. 😍
One of my favorite cars
Was at the Nurburgring last weekend and decided to do the Hyundai N taxi all I can say is wow what a phenomenal little machine was even more shocked to discover the car hadn’t been modified in any way, enjoyed it that much I did 5 laps in total best money spent in a long time. Just a shame it isn’t AWD as I’d have one over my current Golf R.
you really enjoyed it more than a golf R?
If you dont have a Golf R MK4 or MK5 (3.2 engine) you dont have a real Golf R.
I think it's directed to compete with Golf GTI which is also FWD and I would choose this over GTI if I was to buy one! That track warranty alone is a big thing plus that noise!
@@stefmoortgat1509 on track yes 100%

I have the I30N with the DCT and it's a rocket ship, and theres never a day that goes by where you commute feels mundane, if you want to push it goes and if you wanna just trundle along and cruise its comfortable whilst still feeling pokey. If it rains however its wheelspin city.
My friend has his in Gibraltar and I've driven it a few times. It's a really enjoyable drive, although I haven't had the chance to really gun it around some twisty roads yet. I'm tempted by the Cupra Leon estate with 310hp.
Great review

The automatic version makes this a great daily, it’s even got hooks in the cabin for your groceries - something manufacturers miss in racey cars. Even a net at the boot comes standard, helps when I have eggs in there to keep them from moving if I push the car on the way home.
Well that was long over due, such a great car!
One of the best modern hot hatchbacks you can buy tbh.
In my W212 E350 bluetec I used to do 0-100 km/h in 7.1 seconds. After I did a stage 1 tune it produced around 280 bhp as the i30 N and did 0-100 km/h in 6.2 seconds!
I've bought i30N DCT a few months ago and I'm the happiest man in the world! It's fast enough, very comfy ona motorway (just returned from Croatia- about 1k km in one direction), handling very percise, and THAT LOOK
I have the pre facelift and absolutely love the car. 6 months in and still puts a huge smile on my face when putting it in N mode
I absolutely love these and would love to own one (one day before the fuel ban) I think the i30N is one of the best looking hatchbacks on the road !! Saying this I actually rented a car in Poland last year and it was a standard i30 and it was bloody awful to drive lol 😂

It's actually a great car. Drove from Kent up North so my mate could pick up his white i30N (A1 is a bloody great road). What a blast even watching that car is, being in it makes you behave like a child, it's very confidence inspiring when driving it too. Usually I find pops&bangs obnoxious as hell, but this car makes it work so well. Amazing how far Hyundai have come. Basically filling the void that Mitsubishi left us with.
Hey Matt, can you please test the Kona N at some stage? Keen to hear your valuable feedback!
Hey Matt the from rotors are bigger than prefacelift, the 4 slots on the grille are the same as the prefacelift, the exhaust system is bigger by 0.5" and launch it with launch control next time
I had one of the first cars and it was brilliant. Wheel hop or tramping was annoying but if you lower the car and fit Michelin Pilot tyres it reduces it a lot. Hyundai 0 to 60 time was never achieved but got closer than Matt did LOL The car needs 4 wheel drive or better power control. Perhaps its the adaptive dampers and the electric diff fighting for grip when you accelerate off the line ?
Always love Hyundai cars, they can be really experimental and fun but remain practical
Not very practical on fuel compared to their competitors though

I am all for any car with a manual transmission. That requirement makes searching for a new car in US very limited. very glad to see they offer this in stick. I do however wish they geared it a little lower to get better fuel efficiency - I think the elantra N runs 2500 @ 70mph . The integra/civicR that someone mentioned only goes 64mph at 2500rpm, which aint good, but is way better than the golf. Also sad to see that they (hyundai) dumped the manual transmission from the accent, which is slow, but half the price. In that, we consistently get 43mph cruising from NC to NJ with a car full of stuff.
I have a pre-facelift I30N and I love it. Such a fun car to drive and the exhaust sounds so good. I swapped my Cupra 290 for it and it's better in almost every single way than the Cupra! In my opinion it's the best hot hatch on the market right now, closely contended with the GR Yaris.
Good cars, ( I was at the Nth degree experience at Millbrook) but it wouldn't tempt me from my Focus RS or GR Yaris. Fwd can be fun but the dynamics are somewhat one dimensional.
I think the brake test results are the only area where Mat short changes us. Almost all the tested cars brake roughly around the 30 - 33 metre distance and there's no measure used to indicate that they're good or bad. Other than that, always great reviews.
The brake tests are pretty useless anyways as 99% of modern cars are traction limited. So much depends on the road surface, tyre age, tyre temperature, air temperate, tyre temperature, brake temperate and so on. For the test to show any usable data you’d need to control for all of those variables and then do the test multiple times in succession.
Agree. Mat's launches are also bad in FWD cars, including the FK8 CTR and the previous i30N!
A great track toy. I love it
