How I Became Okay With Disbudding/ Dehorning Goat Kids

I used to be pretty against the whole disbudding process! I hadn't had goats for long when I initially decided to keep horns on our goats. We haven't really had (many) major problems with horns, but the truth is I didn't have enough experience with the disbudding process to really form my own opinion on it... until now!

  • Weather or not to keep horns on goats can be a controversial topic! I'd love to hear your experience with your goats (or some goats you know) in the comments! I know we can talk about this in a constructive and loving way. Thanks all!

  • I'll go with the other comments and say i can't get over how beautiful and adorable tempest is!😍🐐. I'm glad the babies did ok with the disbudding, i was wondering how that went. Sunshine and in the 60s today making me ready for our garden, and i even heard a gritty grat (tiny frog) lastnight and woke up to a yard full of robins sooo maybe phil was wrong indeed 🤞

    • There is a tool called a disbudding iron and it heats up to 1000 degrees and burns the horn bud off. It is very fast! The little nub pops right off.

  • I know this is a really old video but the lady I have gotten my goats from lost a doe because another goat with horns got up under her and ripped her utter. My new kids I have were disbudded before I got them but their older brother and sister I got last year still have horns. She, understandably, says she'll never have another horned goat.I may have already commented this before so forgive me if I am repeating myself.

    • I don't think I've heard that before!! YIKES! I see how that could happen. That's heartbreaking. I find that there are goats with horns that don't tend to use them ever, and then there are brutes. It's hard to know their true personality when they are young so disbudding is like playing it safe. ♡

  • We disbud only the NDs that will be show goats. My personal preference would be to leave the horns on as it makes management (aka holding, catching, etc) exponentially easier. - Rick

    • Woohoo!! Yeah especially for the registered stock, disbudding makes sense. I know people who won't buy a goat with horns. I don't know of any who won't buy them without. But, someone like that could be out there!

  • Disbudding should be left up to the owner. That said, I like the way they look without their horns.

    @eadecamp@eadecamp Жыл бұрын
    • I like the look of horns but the smooth heads are sure nice too!!! I agree, leaving it up to the owner is best. We have sold quite a few horned babies this last bit because people wanted them left on!♡♡

  • Do meat goats need to be disbudded to be shown? I know Dairy goats do but I dont think meat goats do..so it makes no sense. I know some goats like boer have horns more curledback so less dangerous..but what about Kikos? They have huge horns that stick out to the sides. I do disbud my does and bucks in general although I have a few w horns. If adga allowed horns for show, I would prob not disbud though

    @lotus....@lotus....2 жыл бұрын
    • As far as I know, yes. But it may depend on who is putting the show on!

  • Had a buck kill some does with his horns. Had a fence horn death with bucks rubbing the fence and getting stuck and another buck ramming him. No thank you to horns. A show dairy goat can't have horns. Showing a pygmy (horns are allowed) is a pain literally to the hands.

  • Hey Heather! I might try to disbud Clara's babies, (key word might) I found this channel and this particular video kzhead.info/sun/fsuog6aRjp6odIE/bejne.html that shows how they do it and not get scours ( I think that is how you spell it) I have watched tons of videos, including Blue Cactus Dairy goats and I just didn't "get it" the technique I mean, and in this video they explain not only how to do it, but how to do the number 8 figure to make sure they don't got scours ( if that is how you spell it ). I read about this technique on a really old book I checked out of the library today ( Ive read it many times before ) and I just didn't understand the technique, when I saw it in this video it clicked and gave me the confidence to try. Will I do it with Clara's? I hope I can get the disbudding thing in time and everything else I ordered locally ( the tattoo things too) but if not I will take them to the vet and for sure do Mocha's, I'm hoping Annabelle's ARE ALL POLLED lol Watch it be one and done lol If you watch the video let me know what you think? Have you tried it? The money saving tempts me, also the idea of not giving them a lot of drugs? they are asleep as they do it at the vet, but I'll be ok if I have to do it one last time. I needed confidence and I think this video gave it to me. They have gorgeous goats, developing raw land in the parents property and have tons of animal content SHe ALSO HAS NO IDEA WHO I AM LOL I hope you guys are doing great! It is too bad about Cash! How does that develop? Do you know? It is not contagious right? I think I read was something about their pee ability. XO Lety

    @TheHeavenlyHomestead@TheHeavenlyHomestead2 жыл бұрын
    • Yes urinary calculi has to do with a urinary blockage and is not contagious. It's often from high phosporus food intake (grain) and too much of it can create bladder stones and the stones get stuck and make it so they can't pee. Eventually their bladder ruptures and it is super sad. Prevention is feeding little to no grain to bucks/wethers and/or supplementing the feed with Ammonium chloride. This Acidifies the urine and helps dissolve the stones or prevent them forming altogether. I just bought two disbudding irons to do it myself these next few kiddings! I'll video it and report back on what I think. I'll do Bunny Hop's babies probably the first week of March!
