  • Pretty much a canned statement but inferring that Ukraine's borders must be respected is pretty strong and parallels China's refusal to export arms or technology to Russia. China sees an opening here to broaden its influence in Eastern Europe and create new markets. It s also in line with China's position on Taiwan which it claims as its territory.

  • Yes, like some others here are also saying, China is not really saying anything new. By saying that Ukraine's territory must be respected, China is saying that China's own territory, with Taiwan as its province, is also respected. Moreover, when it comes to what they see as renegade provinces - whether it concerns the Donbas or Taiwan, dialogue is the way to keep a country together and that a unilaterally chosen secession of renegade provinces such as Donbas or Taiwan is in their view not an option and contrary to the principle of territorial integrity.

  • This is consistent with China’s diplomatic policy - no intervention with the domestic affairs of other countries. Taiwan is arguably the most sensitive topic when it comes to recent diplomatic dynamic. China is unhappy with any forms of intervention because Taiwan issue is a domestic affairs according to Chinese.

    • its a different issue unfortunately, Taiwan has never declared independence and Taiwan and China are still in a civil war. While Ukraine has been an independent nation since the 1900s. China has a binding agreement with Ukraine since 2013 that if its ever attacked with a Nuke China must defend Ukraine. Its one of the reasons why China is taking this stance.

  • This is how leaders earn respect. I must say that I am beginning to change my view about Chinese leadership. I am very proud of China's attitude. Saying that borders must be respected is a pretty strong message for Mr. Putin. And the Chinese are taking no risks since they know how Putin has lost all credibility and trust. So they practice what they speak and also refuse to export arms or technology to Russia too.

  • At first I thought I could stand with China on this one, because it began with respecting international borders, but then he started to talk about resuming peace talks without any preconditions. Too often Russia used the excuse of peace talks only to give themselves time to regroup and attack again. So in essence China plays into Russia's hands. If Russia could somehow take over the whole of Ukraine, I'm pretty sure China wouldn't care.

They believe Taiwan is part of China, and want to publicly say that sovereignty is the most important factor... as a means to keep (in their eyes) the US out of the China/Taiwan situation. To them, the US helping Taiwan is just like Russia "helping" Ukraine. That said, I'm super glad they said this because it also means they are taking a stand publicly against Putin as well.

I think we should be able to discuss: Tactical and Strategic Positioning in Blocks territories. What it means that certain NATO allies are protected by the nuclear umbrella, however vital offensive/defensive installations are not installed within their borders.
