Years ago, I discovered Dr. Gabor Matè’s book “Scattered”. I read it and became addicted to his work. He is absolutely brilliant. For years, I was afraid to look into his views on Palestinian rights. I was afraid that his view of Palestinians would crush me. I admired him and his work so very much..I am Palestinian. One day, I listened to an excellent talk that he gave to a group of teachers and school social workers. In the Q&A, someone asked him about Palestinian children and trauma. I felt a rush of adrenaline hearing this question. I inadvertently held my breath. Then he began to answer the question and I sobbed. I sobbed with my heart and soul. It was in that moment that I fully realized that Dr. Matè was more than just a brilliant doctor. He is an extraordinary empath. He is a man who views the world through the brilliant lens that he created through his work. I felt silly for avoiding looking into his views on the subject. He is Dr. Gabor Matè. Of course, he would understand the experience and traumas of Palestinian children. Thank you Dr. Matè. You are a living legend.

Yeah, most occupations had to be ended by armed resistance. The occupiers would NEVER grant freedom to the occupied out of their own volition. They always have to be FORCED to free the people they occupy. I think this is why those that come from colonial countries find it so difficult to wrap their heads about how oppressive and suffocating and disheartening and depressing being under occupation is. The closest thing it can be compared to is slavery, you feel that you lose your freedom, your dignity, your aspirations and dreams, you feel crushed from the inside out.

One of the best, if not “The” best, interviews Morgan has made so far. Hat-off to Dr. Gabor Mate. When one listens to his words and idea’s, he realises that humanity is still good.
Piers doesn’t sincerely mean what he says about the plight of the Palestinians, otherwise he wouldn’t have been so fixated on Oct the 7th alone. But I do have to give him credit for allowing people like Dr. Mate to speak on his platform. This almost never happens in the US mainstream media.
Piers has a way of asking inflammatory questions to incite defensive responses, but dr Mate addresses then in such a calm and rational manner that really elevates the integrity of the conversation. A true masterclass

He constantly talks out of both sides of his mouth often cutting people off while they speak to ask them these questions and make these statements. They talk about Jihad like it’s a dirty word or a terrorist invention. The people who call themselves jihadists or mujahidin are declaring that they fight with the permission of their lord and are bound by the laws of their faith, to protect their homes/property, families, and rights. Piers, if someone occupied me, my body, my home, my family, how long could I suppress my hostility? Hence even the most rational, knowledgeable and compassionate like Mate are constantly attacked by extreme accusations. On social media and on edited platforms too. Asking this questions is a way to rule out these accusations very early, so the person watching the screen get a "Hey, this guy is okay, he won't verify any inhumane actions, he is okay" message. It is bad that we need it but we need it. That's how war works.

Dr. Mate is a gem. I've benefitted a lot from his book Scattered Minds, I consider it essential reading for modern day parents where attention issues and hyperactivity are endemic across parents and their children.
Scattered Minds is fantastic. It really helped me come to terms with my own ADHD diagnosis as a young adult. I'd highly recommend his book In The Realm Of Hungry Ghosts as well. It's a phenomenal, empathy-driven look at Mate's clients in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, and the ways in which trauma impacts the human mind and spirit.

And that is not historically controversial. The present situation cannot be understood without looking at historical context nor can we move forward if the present occupation and supression of the Palestinians continue. Sharon your previous guest talks about co-existence, there is no co-existence, there is supression, periodic massacres, land occupation, continuous expulsion of the population from their homes. This cannot go on. I m not talking about 1948, I m talking about since 1967 and what is going on right now. Most Israelis are not aware of the history of what the Palestinian have suffered. They dont know that in 1948 there were multiple massacres of large number of people by Israeli forces. They dont know the history of the subjective experience of the Palestinians and in the absence of that knowledge, October 7th just strike them as another horrific anti Semitic event. If you ask me on how to move forward lets inform ourselves of the actual experience of both sides. On Every country has the right to defend itself but Israel has no right to impose an occupation on people. In 1956 there was a great Hungarian revolution against Russian occupation, did Russia has the right to defend itself against the Hungarian revolutionaries? When we are talking about Israel's right of defense, we are taking isolated Palestinian actions but we are not saying that this population also has the right to defend itself against the occupation.
