    • Is there a substantial difference between intermittent fasting (8h to 12hr / day) and continuous fasting (24/7) for a prolonged period of time (e.g. 30 - 40 days) ? Thanks

  • By far the hardest part of fasting is the boredom. If you've never done a multiday fast, you have no idea the enormous amount of your daily time is spent thinking about, preparing, or eating food. Depending on your lifestyle, it can be really hard to fill all that extra free time. If you want a fast to be easy, start it when you are very busy.

    • I hate all this enormous amount of time thinking about, preparing and eating food. I find eating to be an annoying chore. Unfortunately i can't start fasting without also figuring out a way to eat a lot more than i do now when i'm not fasting. That's because i weigh 44.4kg (97.9 lbs), at a height of 171cm (5ft 7.3in). There's barely any fat to lose, and i don't want to lose the little muscle i have. Even then i feel much better when i'm fasting. I never feel much hunger anyway, and my blood sugar stops being low after around 8h of not eating. I never did it for longer than probably 18h, but up to that time i feel great.

  • Two years ago in February of 2020, I was a massive 420lbs(6'3") about to turn 40 and I decided enough was enough. I started a six-day fast and then jumped into intermittent fasting on the carnivore diet. I recorded my weight each day along with my waist measurement and food intake when I ate. Nine months later I had lost just over one hundred pounds and thirteen inches off my stomach. It didn't seem hard and I was happy and proud. At the end of one of my fasts, the scale even read 299.9! I was stoked. It's May of 2022 here I sit at 405lbs. I don't know exactly where I gave up, maybe after I saw I was below 300lbs and convinced myself the job was done. Anyway little by little I started into my old habits and by the holidays I was full-blown eating fast food a lot. I was not tracking any of my stats, they just started to climb back up. A year to take it off and one more to yoyo right back to where I started. FML, I guess it's a common story. Now I'm back in the mindset of enough is enough. I want to lose the weight, I know I can because I already did. I would like to be healthy and play with my kid without having to have a sit-down after just a few minutes. I've tried to psych myself up to start again but it's always: one last cheat meal or I'll start on Monday. Excuse after excuse. I'm trying to get that motivation I had two years ago. Videos like this get me closer and closer. Thank you for content like this. If you've read this to the end, thank you for reading my ramblings. Be well and have a great day!

    • Don’t allow yourself to say one more day, I highly encourage you look into books about self control and restraint. Also if you’re addicted to fast food it might be time to find new food options. My boyfriend eats fast food pretty much all summer due to his family not cooking, and he always puts on weight in the summer because of it. During the school year at university however he will shed weight and even gain muscle. It’s really hard to quit fastfood but if you can slowly cut it out of your life, along with drinks like soda, it will help. And maybe you don’t have to stop entirely, you could make it a treat for once a month. Either way, I wish you the best 💙

You can fast from food for a pretty long time, but need water. 70% of your body is water, it uses up it's stores, they NEED to be replaced for it to function. food is simply the catalyst for inefficient energy conversion, much of which can be done with the stored energy (fat) already there.

I've also discovered that doing cardio on those first two days burns through that liver glucose faster so you can get into ketosis faster. After that, simply walking was enough of a workout for me. • I'm into fasting medicine since 2014. I'm fasting NOW, 60 hrs in while writing and going to an open ending prolonged fasting. I'm an ex obese person. Now i'm bodybuilding lean. SALT is VERY important for fasting longer than 3-5 days, with a pinch of potassium (but stay low 'cause potassium imbalance could give you death by heart failure). I lost over 50 kg since 2014, NO LOOSE SKIN at all. Fasting + bodybuilding = cosmetic surgeon of the Devil. While fasting for weight loss you'll discover that fasting can cure a LOT of things: autoimmune pathologies, age related cosmetic defects, old scars, skin defects. And it starves cancer too, if you have it. Surplus IS the main pathology's cause in modern world. Abstinence IS the cure. Keep fasting, my friends!

      @adamiadamiadami@adamiadamiadami Жыл бұрын
    • @@adamiadamiadami It depends. I'm in OMAD since 2014. For reasons connected with my health i've done a long prolonged IF regimen for 6 months this year (it was a "rolling 72s hrs", basically one meal every 3 days for 6 months no stop), cause i've an incurable hillness with chronic pain - CH - and it worked to improve my remission. Now i'm doing a prolonged open ended fasting to absorb a skin tissue defect i had for scleroderma morphea - an autoimmune desease. it's working fine, apparently, the collagen plaque is reabsorbing. I do use supplements - mostly vitamins and minerals - to avoid deficiencies. Salt and potassium refeeds are the most important and the most difficult to manage, you should not try these advanced fastings with no expertise. Or you'll die. Fasting is a SKILL you should learn a little bit at a time, supplementation included.

  • I fasted for 3 days when I was 11 years old in order to enter ketosis to treat my epilepsy. The first 24-36 hours is the worst, but after that, hunger vanishes and my mood was improved, I had tonnes of energy and just felt really light and euphoric and completed my homework and chores far faster than I normally did. I think this is a reason why most religions encourage fasting, it clears out the body, you feel great, and it lets you focus on prayer, and it's easier to enter a euphoric state. After getting off epilepsy medication, which had the side affect of suppressing hunger, I ended up gaining a lot of weight. I have been working myself towards intermittent fasting. I started by waking up at 7 am and not eating until noon. Then each day I would add 5 minutes on to that. I now do not eat until 1:50 pm and I no longer feel hungry for breakfast. My goal is to get to 4pm as my first meal of the day, and from there I want to start fasting over the weekend. So far, I haven't lost weight, but I have stopped gaining weight and I have been able to lift more at gym and feel more energy during the day. Also, having fewer meals makes for less of my day spent cooking and cleaning, which is a plus.

  • I'm not sure whether you've looked into this. The Army has done a plethora of research on fasting due to the stress levels they apply to their Special Forces Units, like the Green Berets and Delta Force. Like you stated, after some time, not eating gives way to not being hungry due to reduced levels of gherlin. I was a combat and flight medic for a short duration at Fort Bragg. On occasions, I would be pick cadets in these schools that were going through extreme caloric deficits on particular phases or post graduation training. At times, I would offer them food. Their responses were always the same... I don't need to go through that hell again (they knew by eating high caloric foods, their hunger levels would peak immediately). I'm attempting to find the research papers right now on how the body adapts to high caloric environments and fasting. I know the research is so counter intuitive on what actually happens. However, recently, the Army and military, in general, has pulled a lot of their research from scientific journals.

  • This video has changed my life for the better. A few months after first watching this video, I fasted Mondays - Thursdays for 22 times spread over a period of 10 months (88 days total) and lost about 40 lbs. I went from a BMI of 29.0 to 23.6. The rest of the time was able to take a break from it and eat and drink more or less normally (as in, sometimes more, sometimes less). This was, is, and will be a long-term sustainable idea. While a big fraction of a year seemed long at first, I realized it was short compared to the 18 years straight I was unhappy about my health and appearance and felt that my life was somewhat on hold. For years I would see myself in the mirror wishing the weight would just go away but it wouldn't just happen on its own. (I did do occasional dieting here and there during that time, to varying success.) This video was like discovering a magic trick, as though I've learned I can mysteriously breathe underwater but I'd never tried. Or that my car could actually run without gasoline, but I'd never tried it. Before I'd thought that if I went an entire day without eating I was possibly just explode, or pass out and be unable to move, or something. I often had the frustration of "Well, I've got to eat something to keep my energy level high enough," always trying to compromise or balance and felt never losing weight effectively while still frequently having heartburn. After a certain point (about a half a day) my hunger level simply peaked and would not grow any larger, and this is a plan that is mentally easier than any calculated dieting plan and one I can be confident is working while I'm fasting. Drinking occasional salt water was a lifesaver, and I relied on coffee, tea with lemon juice, seltzer water (sometimes with sweeteners added), and a few tablespoons of tart cherry juice at night. If nothing else, this psychologically freed me from a starvation phobia. The feeling of "hangry" was actually rooted from unfounded fear; I found it was something that could be simply overcome with a state of mind. This is something basically easy once I truly set my mind to it and it actually worked, and with a tally sheet I marked my progress with each week completed. That being said, I did have diminishing returns after about the 15th week of it, especially since at that point I was only alternating weeks instead of often going two in a row. In the future, I think it will work better if I just go one or two days at a time every week, and also eat healthy during the days that I do eat. I'll have to monitor my weight, at least maintain it, or hopefully become leaner. It is simple, strict, and sustainable.

    • Dumb comment. Of course everyone knows that if you just establish a moderate deficit on a daily basis you will lose weight. But that's difficult to do unless you count calories, and even then your estimate can be significantly off. It's also difficult in another sense for those with food addiction tendencies - you have to try to eat a certain amount, but no more. If you have an addict's mind, then that's analogous to an alcoholic just having one or two drinks. It's very difficult. The fasting approach removes that and simplifies things to a binary which is easier for our minds to deal with - am I eating today? Yes or no. Many people report that counting calories makes their food life extremely stressful - it becomes like an OCD thing.@@user-ro9hm5xr3o

(Sounds like a lot for a 5'3/5'4 girl, but my doctor thinks its perfect.) I'll get there. Sometimes I eat twice a day. Sometimes I fast for 24 hours. But I dont care if Ive only lost 9 lbs. in 2 months. Slow and steady wins the race. I'll get there.

But now I have a difficult time going 16 hrs without food due to the anxiety I have. I’m not sure why going without food now makes me anxious. But I went from 160 lbs to 107 lbs over the course of the fast. And it took me injuring my knee in 2013 to gain the weight back. • Pay attention to your thoughts. Your thoughts determine your emotions, which determines your behavior. I know you’ve fasted before, but there could be thoughts that you’re having about the repercussions of fasting. For example, when I first started fasting, even though I’ve got enough body fat, it brought up fears of dying. I also have thoughts of deprivation or restriction and what will happen after the fast, like wanting to make up for the deprivation and gaining the fat back. I look to food for dealing with emotions, and while I realize it’s not the best way to handle how I feel, I do get scared about not having it as an outlet. I also worry about boredom. There are so many things. If you truly pay attention to your thoughts, you’ll know why you’re anxious. Watch the thoughts. Some people see them as clouds and just watch the thoughts come up and drift away. Become the observer of your thoughts, and realize they don’t mean anything. You don’t have to react to them. Then, you feel the anxiety. It’s not about getting past it or just doing it while anxious or stuffing it down. Don’t resist it. Just feel it, and you’ll get to the point where you realize it’s really nothing. It’ll dissipate. Face the thoughts and anxiety head on. That’s the only way to see that they literally mean nothing and don’t have to impact your fasting or anything else for that matter.

I'm not a big guy (certainly not fat), but that 40 days was not nearly as hard as I expected it to me. I drank only filtered rain water. My BP went down, obviously lost some weight and muscle, but never really felt depleted. I think it cured my high BP. Will be doing it again in the new year (maybe sooner). :)

  • The part I liked best about fasting is that (to me) it seemed like my stomach shrunk in size. By the time I was done with a 10 day fast, eating half an apple had me feeling full, and my normal food portions seemed crazy big. That lasted for almost 2 months and it almost took effort to get my food intake anywhere near where it was before. After my 10 day fast, I had come to the conclusion that restaurant portion sizes are a big part of why Americans are catastrophically obese. Each meal you eat out is twice to three times what you can feel full on. Examples: A Chipotle Burrito Bowl that I used to eat in one sitting is now FOUR meals. I used to get the Jimmy John's Giant sandwich and it was 1 meal and maybe a snack... Now I get the slim sandwich and half can often be plenty to fill me up. Two or three chicken nuggets or one chicken strip or a drumstick is enough. I don't say no to when my friends want to go out, but it rarely costs me more than the cheapest item on the menu, or I order from the kids menu. Works wonders and realistically, all you have to do is cut out ALL caffeine and sugar for 2 days before you start no food and you'll make it for as long as you want. Start with 3 days, then skip 4, then 4 days and skip 3, then 5 and 5, then 7 and 7, after that it's up to you with a week break between each. You'll be shocked at how much weight you will lose. Keep walking and doing minor exercise and your muscle loss will be minimal to none.

      @Denis19912@Denis199122 жыл бұрын

      @ivanaramburo4030@ivanaramburo40302 жыл бұрын
    • @@ivanaramburo4030 It's a matter of adopting a new lifestyle. When you do fasting, your stomach will shrink in size. Less food will make you feel full. After a 10 day fast, half an apple will make me feel full. If you go back to your old eating habits, you will gain back the weight. Fasting has an effect of making your body maintain the weight with fewer calories. The 2000 calorie a day diet is part of why Americans are huge on average. 2,000 calories is a LOT of food, and it takes a LOT of muscle or activity to burn that many calories. Fasting tunes your body to become very efficient. That efficiency requires lower amounts of calories to be sustained. If you return to your old ways, the lost weight will come back.

    • @@WhatIveLearned From the same articles you've shared: "Our study is not without limitations: since this was the first study assessing the safety and glycemic effects of prolonged fasting, our study participants were not randomized to the sequence of the 12 hrs and 36 hrs, therefore 12 hrs fasting periods were always followed by the 36 hours period. In addition, in case of a hypoglycemic event, participants administered carbohydrates and strictly speaking the fasting period ended at this time point. However, this administration was critical for safety reasons. Furthermore, only participants running on CSII were allowed to lower the basal insulin rate but not those with MDI. Notwithstanding, within the group of participants on CSII the basal insulin rate was similar for both trial arms. While this is important data on prolonged fasting in people with type 1 diabetes, we appreciate that from a single 36 fasting period one cannot extrapolate to the safety of intermittent fasting over a longer period of time in this population, an aspect that clearly needs further attention and investigation. " Hence, it is still not worth risking Type 1 Diabetes Patients with fasting.

Its makes my head clear, sharp and "light" (Literally and figuratively). Usually im not hungry during fasting (maybe adaptation) but sometimes I need just some taste. Usually coffee in the morning, sour tastes or ginger (tea) help. When i visit my relatives who eat "normal" I literally feel stuffed and sluggish all the time. Its fun to indulge sometimes but after a few days I voluntarily skip fresh, homemade pencakes for breakfast. My biggest concern is that most people do not believe me when i say i like fasting. They assume underlying eating disorders, or that i want to shame their eating habits. Really annoys me

I cook, too, but it takes me maybe 15 min. And there's not that much thinking about it. More like, looking into the fridge and deciding what needs to go first and what would go together well. Yesterday, I cooked half a sweet potato, a potato, three small carrots, and fried some garlic and half a tomato. Add some melted vegan cheese and some pesto, perfect meal. :-)

Look at the animals when they're sick, they don't eat or drink until they get better. with that being said, if you are someone who has never fasted a day in your life and/or has diabetes or health issues, you have to do this slowly. start with 12 hours, then increase it gradually. Try a 24 day water fast and see how you feel , and from there you can increase it. Also transitioning to a more whole food diet will help support your body and rebuild.

This is the biggest fat/weight loss I managed after nearly 6 months of trying (got from 101.6kg to 95.6kg then stalled) Found if I try to keep doing basic exercise, pullups/dips for upper body and walking for legs, to hopefully prevent much muscle loss. What I found the most surprising is how even now I'm not hungry, I feel I could just keep going. But as it means you have no weekend life, thinking of adopting a 2:5 diet and keeping Saturday normal (and Sunday will burn off Saturday food/drink) then fast Monday-Friday. In theory I should maintain my loss of around 1.5-2kg a week, would like to get down to 80-75kg which will be around 15-18%

  • @ 14:40 it should be pointed out that there is a massive difference between healthy fasting and deliberately starving yourself. As a recovered anorexic and frequent faster, I know that I must always be extremely cautious and aware of my motivations - but I'm middle aged and experienced, at 19 I nearly died.

    @YourBeingParanoid@YourBeingParanoid2 жыл бұрын
    • Oooof, I hope that you're doing okay. I think that you make a very important point- knowing with the help of other people/medical instruments and examinations or by your own observation whether you suffer more because of fasting or it just makes things better. For people who are overweight, or are healthy weight, but want to do a cleansing thing, it might be beneficial if they're not missing some essential nutrients that they require daily; thus, suffering the effects of the lack. So, for example, for my case I'd say it's safe (only did close to 24 hours fast so far, so I can't say what exactly happens with longer fasts). But the main point is if it's healthy for you. Fasting in itself is as simple as that- abstaining from any chosen inputs (food, any types of liquids or both). It can be harmful or beneficial depending on where the person is. If a person is at a place where you were in your past, it can further the harm. A body that's already lacking in things, putting it under further stress of the same type can destroy it irreversibly or even kill the body in some cases. It's very important to understand when and when not to apply the fasting protocol.

  • I do a multi-day fast every few months, and I regularly use intermittent with an 18 to 20 hour window. I am also a competitive powerlifter, and I can assure you, I am much stronger mid-fast than I am normally. I made a video demonstrating max lifts on hour 32 of a 48 hour fast. I did not lose any muscle mass at any point, and in fact, I gained strength. It takes a little bit of planning, but it is well worth the effort.

      @ArtisolGG@ArtisolGG Жыл бұрын
    • @@ArtisolGG absolutely. I would inform them that by the time you are in your second day, you are no longer burning sugar. All of your glucose and glycogen stores are long depleted by that point and you are in full ketosis. It is impossible to pass out from that at that point. I have a video somewhere in my "instructional and discussions" playlist where I talk about this while lifting heavy doing squats, bench and deadlift. I maxed out all three lifts, and I literally felt like I was on some kind of stimulant drug. I had so much energy, and I had never experienced anything like it. I don't know if going super heavy like I did is something you would want to do regularly, but I wanted to try it just to see. It was one of the best training sessions that I had ever completed. I felt amazing afterwords. The body is amazing.

It gets easier after day 7 but still sucks overall and I miss food. Also I drink water with LMNT to keep up my electrolytes. Half way there guys wish me luck Hey so I’m sorry I haven’t been giving updates no I’m not dead. But I failed to go the 30 days and gave into temptation at day 19 I still am happy with my progress I went from 289 lbs to 263lbs in 19 days and right now I’m around 266 lbs. I’m planning on going on another 21 day fast to hopefully get down to 240 lbs and I will probably make a video about my experience and upload it to KZhead so I’ll keep you guys posted when I do and answer any more of your guy’s questions.

  • I'm on day 4 of my fast aiming for 40, and honestly, I don't get why no one speaks about it. I lost 25kg with CICO before over the course of a year, but if my tracking's right, I'm on track to lose that same amount by the time I finish my fast in a month. And there's all of these other physical and mental benefits too. Why is no one speaking about this? This is a free ticket to curing depression and getting healthier, and it isn't even hard after the first 3 days. As he said in the video, hunger disappears. It's like a cheat code. Why isn't every single obese person told about this?.............................. Yeah, the answer's obvious. Fat people spend more on healthcare, food, and they die very early into their retirement. It obviously wouldn't make sense for the government to promote actual healthy diet education.

I can feel such a tremendous difference in my being. I have decided to purify again and this time not break the law of eating one meal a day and no more garbage. I let emotions get to me. I was eating way too much fast food and gained about 15 kilos that I hated when I saw myself in the mirror. • I'm about 16 hours into a fast. I do regular short fasts and I've noticed that usually about 12 hours into it I have a huge glucose spike. It may be because I am diabetic but it's well controlled with fasting and the keto diet, my last two A1c tests were 5.7 and 6.1. My last attempt at a long fast was canceled at just short of 40 hours. I started getting dizzy, confused, naseus, fainty. Turns out it was an electrolyte thing. Being on keto I cook most all my own food and I don't use salt much so I went into the fast sodium deficient. I've never fasted more than 4 days, but now every attempt will include salt. As for the LMNT, it has 5 times more NA (sodium) than K (potasium) yet the RDA states you need twice the K as NA so I'd like to know how they say it's "balanced".

  • Thank you for that info. My first fast was 5 days. Felt awesome. Started routinely fasting for a few years now. Longest I've gone is 9- 1/2 days. That was the best. But then I couldn't do a 6 day fast two weeks later. I struggle with weight, but the only thing that has worked and actually keeps most of the weight off is fasting. I read up and see many videos on the subject. Even some Doctors are leaning on prescribing some fasting as opposed to only medications. That is awesome. Thank you and God bless.
