  • My experience was very different. I had my fingers crossed about Obama care the whole time this was happening. I was very ill. I had no insurance and was not able to get any real doctors care. I thought I was going to die. And then the bill passed and my state took the medicare version for those who couldn't afford to pay for it. It ended up allowing me to get a diagnosis and treatment/surgery. It saved my life.

    • I'm glad it arrived in time for you. Its so hard to reconcile that i really wish Obama had concentrated on general economics first and if he felt compelled to work on Healthcare first, that he was more forceful in getting it passed quickly. The healthcare act wasnt so radical, it was basically a Republican plan. He didnt need to slow walk that bill, and it cost him the majority. Simple as that. Gave the Tea Party plenty of time to create lurid stories about death panels and other assorted lies. Healthcare consumed Capitol Hill, while the Recession decimated communities, then the 2010 Mid-Terms and all progress ceased, in fact, reversing in many areas. And again, i'm really glad that you received help in time, your perspective is important. I think mine holds merit also though.

    • Ian Flanagan Trump is brainwashed by the same memes and molded from the same dark side of the internet as the aholes youre arguing with. what is the point? they are purposefully agressive; their extreme right wing philosophy is as out of balance as the minds of these lackeys doing their shill work for the alt right. there is no debate because if you attempt to debate that automatically makes you an extreme leftist. its them and then normal cuckservatives and then the masses of liberals. they are unable and unwilling to make concessions or compromises in their virulent barrage of insults. alt right and whoever else is passing for conservative these days is really starting to wear thin. i dont care if we have a republican, a democrat, or a candidate from any other party, for that matter, i just want people to just stop being fucking nuts. another bush, anothrr obama, another clinton, someone new, bernie sanders, i will take any of them. resurrect reagan? sure sure fine lets do that. ill trade this for iran-contra, he had Larry Niven as an advisor.

      @zargmatt@zargmatt6 жыл бұрын
    • Except there is no such thing as extreme leftists in the United States. Both major parties are pro-capitalist, both believe in private ownership of corporations, there is no analog in the States to, say, the Labor Party in the UK (though I think they spell it, labour), or the Socialist Party in Italy and so on and so on. What most of the world regards as hard left never took root here. The idea of a true left in America is an utter fabrication, though a clever one I grant you. We have one Socialist in both houses of Congress and nary a single Communist.

      @BlueBaron3339@BlueBaron33396 жыл бұрын
    • Wasn't saying otherwise, David. And Bernie is the sole Socialist in Congress. And a true left, I agree, wouldn't work here for reasons too numerous to list in the comments section of KZhead. My personal sanity test for this is pretty simple. If it makes sense as a for-profit enterprise, let it be that. If it doesn't - e.g. major infrastructure, national defense, basic scientific research - then it should be publically funded. And even within those, you have profit making enterprises such as defense contractors, steel suppliers and the like.

Add a few dashes of lying memes on Facebook into a pot of social pressure from friends and their communities all working in a vacuum to convince each other that Trump was the lesser of two evils, and sprinkle on top the electoral college not actually representing the majority vote, and you get here. At first, I thought here we go with another hard left documentary but in retrospect, thats part of the problem that is destroying us from the inside out and the outside in through and through. We have to at some point recognize that if we don't start listening to each other, this problem is going to make this world a place colder and more rigid than ever. In humility, I'm going to work on listening more, judging less, and applying understanding and compassion to that in which I hear. If even just 40% of us humble ourselves to do the same, maybe the world will be just 10% better, but its 10% better than it was yesterday.

  • I live in an affluent suburb that has a lot of abandoned houses in it that are now used as venues to shoot up heroin. The Republicans deregulated mortgage lending allowing first time home buyers to get seduced into predatory loan terms, and then they opposed helping those same people. They deregulated banking and as a result when the housing bubble popped it took a giant chunk of our GDP with it. Now the county I live in is filled with heroin and abandon homes but, at least we're not socialists I guess. I guess it's a good thing that they stuck to their pointless principles that have now caused three different recessions in my lifetime. Can someone please explain to me what the point of an almost religious devotion to an economic policy that doesn't even work is? Seriously the amount that the rich save on taxes under Republican policies doesn't even equal what they lose when their investments tank in the inevitable recession.

    @wtbgamegenie@wtbgamegenie6 жыл бұрын
    • wtbgamegenie wrong, Clinton deregulated. And forced lenders to make subprime loans under threat of prosecution using civil rights laws, specifically discriminatory lending. Clinton administration asserted certain zip codes were not being lent to and thought more diversity, thus gambling with the greater health of the entire economy, imperative and morally "just" which goes against capitalism through the intententional redirection of capital.

And I'm really starting to think that if we don't start learning how to friggin talk to each other like human beings, something that should be fairly basic amongst adults then America is going to become either an ineffective failed republic or get run over by some of the worst fascists the world has ever seen. I don't think that will be Trump, I don't think he's got the wits to make that happen, but he is certainly opening doors for the next far right candidate who's more capable to go the whole way into authoritarianism and once that happens it's over, we aren't coming back to the America we know and love after that. We're all to blame here, myself included, get over it, accept you've fucked up and help fix this country together with your fellow American.

Fucking idiot crashed his plan after disobeying direct orders, aided the enemy in their campaign to make the Hanoi Hilton seem like a humanitarian POW camp, lived a lavish existence compared to his fellow prisoners many of whom stayed in tiger cages for years at a time, and then left his compatriots to rot in that jungle shit-hole after they only released half of the POWs because the government refused to send the remainder of the ransom. Trump will make sure that RINO swamp scum like John's cowardly ass will be properly addressed in the history books now that he showed his true colors by refusing to repeal 0bamacare even though it caused insurance premiums in his state to double.

      @jewslikefunk@jewslikefunk6 жыл бұрын
    • +JewsLikeFunk Well in NZ we have 6-7 parties with seats in parliament, so there's plenty of differences there. But the two mains ones are National (centre-right and currently in power) and Labour (centre-left), and they're actually pretty similar with the exception of a few issues. Labour want big increases to healthcare and education which they claim the National party has been underfunding. They also want 3 years of free university education, tax cuts for low middle class and poor ONLY, big action on climate change and environment, and cuts to low skilled immigration. National want to give tax breaks of up to $1,040 to everyone, with some extra money for the poor. They want to keep the current interest free student load scheme, continue to make small gradual progress on climate change and the environment, and continue the current immigration scheme. According to recent polls looks like Labour will overthrow National from power this election. Voting is happening on the 23 of September, so you might want to check out the result if you're interested :D

    • *Johnny Schmegma* What have Democrats fundamentally changed their tune on in the last twenty or so years? I can’t think of anything. • @@Kyle_Schaff Well just recently Biden had some allegation of sexual harassment against him but the democrats are all saying she's not credible, even though they all rallied behind the #believeWomen mantra when Trump was being accused of the same type of thing. Granted this isn't quite the same thing but it's an example of their hypocrisy nonetheless.

      @Jone952@Jone9524 жыл бұрын
    • *Johnny Schmegma* Well, that’s because the Biden sexual assault allegation could not be substantiated. The NYTimes and WaPo reached out to a ton of people who either could or should have known something about this and nothing came out. Not to mention that Biden has faced A TON of pushback from Democrats over this. Trump literally admitted to sexual assault and has multiple substantiated accusations made against him, and that did not dissuade support from Republican voters or Congressmen. And this isn’t even a true point to begin with. For example, we had Democratic Senator Al Franken resign because of an inappropriate picture while we had pedophile and Republican Congressional candidate Roy Moore literally endorsed by Trump. I can find you a more substantial list of Democrats who’ve lost all credibility after sexual assault allegations while I can find you a ton of Republicans who’ve gotten away with it politically Scot-free.

  • A glance at the comment section is the perfect example of what this video has shown: *A House Divided* . • +mike We don't live in a country that blocks the free flow of information. Ultimately it's up to ourselves to seek out credible sources. So, the media can't take all the blame. In fact Republicans had a lot to do with discrediting to the media through conspiracy theories and anti-media propaganda. No, the media didn't divide us they've just become the convenient scapegoats.

    • +mike Not bullshit and you can't argue that "MSM pushes the anti-right narrative" when you have Fox News and the like. We have highly regarded, award winning, and long standing news organizations that are well known for their fact based reporting. You can look at the WSJ (regarded as a right leaning) and WaPo (regarded as left leaning), right now, and find reports of the same incidents with the same facts. They are the same, because they're just reporting and not giving their opinion.

  • this was really well done, and I don't always sat that about VICE docs, but it's definitely a cohesive look-back into how politics and country became so divided. I don't think the blame falls squarely on the right so much as on people becoming driven by reactive news media from all sorts of sources, really almost like an avalanche effect of our country losing its sense of rationale. I also blame both sides for resorting to all the fighting and name calling across aisles. How has the root of our country become like entitled babies? and then we voted for an entitled baby? And now government leaders, news panels, and even friends and family don't listen to each other. I agree with Frank Luntz saying "we f-cked up, we killed the goose that laid the golden egg". I hope this isn't the end of America's greatness.

    • Kinda, but it's a 100 times more complicated than that, especially since there are divisions within those divisions and across those divisions. For starters, there's so much going on that it's hard to be 'awake' for all of it, and that can form some of those into 'distractions' from more important issues leading to some 'awake' people to 'sleep' on other things. More general, the nation is so divided because "anger drives out reason" (Charlie Munger)

      @patrickjoseph1025@patrickjoseph10254 жыл бұрын
    • This is still the attitude of each and every person belonging to either half, to this day. Take your average conservative rant, calling out dems. Replace the word "democrats" with "conservatives" and 9 times out of 10, it still makes sense. But it's like people don't see that in themselves. If so many on both sides are so willing to become ideological caricatures, and they can do that openly and still be taken seriously, maybe everyone is asleep? The issues rotate, but the fundamental roadblocks never change... they're never overcome. Just covered over by arguing and infighting. Ultimately people are just going to fixate on philosophy and rhetoric... talking so much the words lose meaning. Can anybody honestly say they know what is really going on at that point? Or is that just more empty rhetoric shot across echo park?
