If other competing companies produced a good quality product with good customer satisfaction and support, they may have something to boast about. • I'm a developer who builds live video streaming on a web-based application. We have authentication so people who share videos can restrict who can see them. On every type of device besides iO$, our original auth strategy worked by passing secure, user tokens via HTTP headers. Except this won't work on iO$ since it swaps out our custom video player with the iO$ video player that has fewer features and does not run the logic that applies the authentication. We had to completely rethink how to pass this data so that iO$ users could be authenticated. Instead of the more secure way of a per-session token in HTTP headers, we had to add a smaller token to the URL query string. This required us to edit the playlist on a per-request basis (instead of using the same data for everyone). This causes more computation needs and costs our indie company more money (not a lot, but measurable). Every other device worked fine, even browsers on Mac OS, but we had to re-engineer specially for iO$ users because unfortunately, they're a large portion of our user base. Bear in mind, this is just for a web application, not an actual installable app. We won't build a native app because we just don't want to deal with Apple's unreasonable constraints.

      @gosnooky@gosnookyАй бұрын

There is no evidence that Apple is trying to make cross platform messaging worse right now, and there's a lot of evidence on 9to5Mac that Apple wants to improve cross platform messaging on iPhone. I can imagine this would be a pretty easy argument for Apple in court because they SAID they will adopt RCS.

If they don't then we would end up like Samsung in Korea that literally owns everything from clothing stores to restaurants, to housing rentals (they just use different brand names but all under Samsung). Aka no one can compete with Samsung because they rule everything. In apple case apple rules access to the Internet. There's a study that says like 80% of teenagers / yong adults in America own apple phones. That means soon that 60% will rise in the next generation. You have to look at the bigger picture and not just a right now thing. Apple is only here because of antitrust. Microsoft was using this same tactic in the 90's and without the government stepping there would be no iPod, iPhone , or I Mac. if your glad and like apple products then you should be glad the government stepped with there antitrust law suit

If they say "you must include an option similar to Android to allow app installs from outside the App Store" then just don't turn that setting on? If they say "you must allow third-party watches the same access as your own" then just don't buy one. What change might actually cause irreversible damage to iPhone? 🤔

      @dftfire@dftfireАй бұрын
    • @@dftfire I think you are missing my point - but to answer the question. The more unrestrained inroads into a system, the more opportunity for attacks, hacking, viruses and exploitation etc. Firstly the just don’t turn on the outside marketplaces feature argument is problematic because it’s assuming that developers will always add their apps to the AppStore - if they don’t and it’s an app you need you have no choice but to use an outside AppStore. Also when operating outside the Apple guidelines for the AppStore the privacy and security standards that Apple expects go out the window. Hypothetically you have no guarantee of the payment gateways, harvesting of information, attempts to access biometric data, app consistency. I know it’s not guaranteed now, but a standardised quality measure limits the chances of bad actors exploiting the system. Even worse governments could force people or employees to use apps that are not bound by the expected AppStore standards allowing data harvesting, spying etc. as these apps will be outside of apple’s checks and balances to protect customers. With 2.3 Bln iPhones sold in total, I find it difficult to find that Apple customers have a problem with the AppStore. Perhaps there are three groups that have a problem with it. First is governments and malicious actors (as mentioned above). Second is Android users who like to complain (maybe they want to buy iPhone but just don’t like the restricted nature). And third is app developers - who are looking to make a quick buck by having cheaper fees because it’s easier than getting new customers and increasing market share (maybe I’m being cynical). Personally I think what Apple should have done a while back is created an independent office of AppStore management with its own COO that although answers to Tim Cook they are fundamentally separate from the day to day management at Apple so they are seen to have an independence. And secondly I think they should divide their developer fees into three tiers at three price points and feature sets. T3 (10%) is compulsory and consists of all the standards checks we’d expect. T2 (20%) / T1 (30%) would include additional things like development consultancy, server hosting, off device AI processing etc. this way Apple customers get the standards checks we need and developers can pay different rates for the level of integration they need. But I’m no expert - others may see it differently.

      @minuszero332@minuszero332Ай бұрын
  • All this will mean is that apple will have to loosen the reigns on their air tight ecosystem and stop making it impossible for other companies to catch up or be included without having to pay ridiculous entry fees for apple to give them a bathroom pass where they MIGHT run into a consumer on the way. They intentionally make it impossible to integrate any other product forcing consumers to continue to buy their products regardless of the fact apple is hardly upgrading their devices each year because they know people who already own apple products cant simple swap to another brand and continue to use those products they spent thousands on. What this means is they can charge whatever they want because they know people will cave and buy the "new" product because its now proven that apple does everything in its power to throttle old devices over time to force users to upgrade and in turn repeating the cycle of monopolizing a market by shutting out other brands and products while also trapping consumers in their ecosystem, simply because apple products don't work with other devices outside of the ecosystems software. RCS shouldn't have only been promised now that other governments are passing laws preventing them from selling phones unless they make changes. *USB-C for example* Why should we be forced to send less secure messages to people who use android phones when those same companies are capable of what imessage does for iphone users. Its not about security if they intentionally make it less secure. They want to give you a less enjoyable and seamless experience when messaging someone using an android to , for a lack of a better phrase, brainwash you into associating a green bubble with a less valuable product regardless if thats actually the case or not. Its manipulative and grimy. This lawsuit hopefully will solve these issues, forcing apple to finally be more innovative and produce an even better product and not just a half baked upgrade every year knowing that customers are basically forced to only buy apple products. More companies will have the ability to integrate across the board. Software and hardware alike, giving us the consumers more choice.

      @GamingPIPI@GamingPIPIАй бұрын
    • @@GamingPIPI You missed the part where I said it was proven they intentionally bottleneck older devices, soooo if you don’t think that eventually forces one to need a new phone you’re outta your mind. Nor did I specify everyone is buying phones every year but let’s not overlook the way phone companies and apple stores offer “upgrade every year” options for trading in iPhones to further encourage it.

      @KipToothPicc@KipToothPiccАй бұрын
    • @@KipToothPicc that happened due to battery. iPhone has much longer software support than android lol

      @GamingPIPI@GamingPIPIАй бұрын
    • @@GamingPIPI regardless of what apple said was the reason, it was still happening without consumers knowledge and they lied about it until they couldn’t anymore in court 🤣 what’s your point? Longevity of software doesn’t matter in the suit as it stands. That’s a separate conversation, and software being used to bottleneck a device because of a battery? That sounds like a hardware issue they chose not to fix which again in turn caused people to have to upgrade 🤣😵 you don’t think they knew that?

      @KipToothPicc@KipToothPiccАй бұрын
    • @@KipToothPicc hardware always wears down over time. Especially batteries, and especially batteries from 5-10 years ago. There's no other way to tackle previous gen hardware degradation then by software. Or did you think they could magically replace those parts? You probably want them to fix natural degradation for free too😂. Bottlenecking wasn't the issue, that's a logical step to keep the older devices functional. Keeping it a secret was the issue. The relevance of longer software support is that you claimed that Apple will force users to buy new phones. How will they force them? The software support is long, and the hardware is just fine. Only the battery could use some replacement after 2-3 years depending on your usage. I'm not forced to buy a phone in any way. I am tempted, but forced? Not even in the slightest. I will buy a new phone tho because I come to realise I prefer a bigger one with bigger battery. If I were completly with this one I couldve kept it for 5 years with maybe one battery replacement. But even that is quite optional

    @cf3619@cf3619Ай бұрын
    • Good luck with that. It's a definite indication you do not do Dev work or understand interoperability and what companies are willing to invest in. Apple watch was sold as an Accessory to an iPhone it's why it cannot be paired to a MacBook or IPad. It's an additional device not a Stand-alone. A MacBook can work 100% without an iPhone and iPad but if you have other devices this Get "better" and now you can use your phone as a Camera and benefit and now your apple air buds connect seamlessly to your MacBook and soo on. Why does apple need to open their spec to others. LITERALLY no Reason for that. The other companies save money by doing nothing then want apple to do the research and marketing and then make it work with their devices for FREE.

      @RogerJoseph@RogerJosephАй бұрын
    • FYI, The only reason you can TXT from a MacBook or iPad is because of the seamless integration with iPhone and it's access to your Cell Provider. Cell Providers wont let you use a Mac directly to access their network and an iPad will need to have a unique Cell phone plan or Esim installed to SMS with no Phone. Please update yourself.

  • AAPL down 4%. I love Apple products and have a fair few in this house, but this is the right move by Uncle Sam. They need dragging down a peg or two. I'm no expert, but the 30% cut on the App Store is just horrendous. All for hosting the apps and very little else. And folk who say the App Store is a lovely curated garden haven't actually looked around it. There's very nearly as much nasty crap there are there is on the Android store.

    @lawrencemanning@lawrencemanningАй бұрын

    @MichaelStanton@MichaelStantonАй бұрын
    • I do believe you're the one missing the point. The DOJ is saying that apple is responsible for SMS /MMS sucking which is not true because those protocols are 1000% managed by your Phone service provider. They are trying to blame apple for imessage being good that it makes SMS look like shit. THAT has NOTHING to do with apple. It's Like suing a Ferrari owner because your Honda civic looks like shit next to it. Phone Carriers have had like 30 years to improve the messaging standard of SMS /MMS and they never did so how is this a problem with Apple. I use Signal Whats app, Facebook messenger, Tictok, Skype all the time and never had an issue with imessage also being on my phone so how is imessage being there making the others worst . The others don't want competition so of course they "feel" it's unfair. Imessage is preinstalled and you have to download their app this is the same shit happened with Netscape vs Internet Explorer

    • How? As soon as Android users can AirDrop or use iMessage, you’ll only receive spam or what on earth can they do that makes anything worse for you. You only profit from it. You get more cheaper options, that work with your current apple devices. If Apple achieves 100% market share, they will do whatever they want (raising prices x2) because there is no competition anymore that can stop them.
