Marvel Cinematic Universe director, writer and comedian Taika Waititi's latest flick "Jojo Rabbit" raised many an eyebrow at the Toronto International Film Festival. But after a positive premiere at the Canadian fest, has the new Disney staple won over audiences on his controversial film? The director and the rest of his cast from "Jojo" Sam Rockwell, Stephen Merchant, Roman Griffin Davis and Thomasin McKenzie sat down to explain the process of green lighting a movie where Hitler stars as a little boy's imaginary friend.
Becoming a world renowned Marvel director was just part of his grand scheme to get this movie greenlit. He was playing the long con.
diamond dogs you sound ominous, like that he is an evil nazi, but how can a Maori become a nazi????? Makes no sense.
Caustic Main with your imagination you can be anything, anything :)
Taika is the new Mel Brooks at the -right- perfect time.
@@marvinarthur8705 this was what i though when i saw the trailer finally a movie similar to the mel brooks movie's
Thats the voice over you hear when the movie starts...
I'd really like to know who dressed Roman, because he just looks like a tiny version of Taika in that outfit
MrsKayKay93 5:12 you right
Hahah... I didn't notice that.
taika dressed the kid. no one else
Taika should have dyed his hair the same colour.
its so cute!!
This was the greatest movie. Jojo’s friend Yorkie deserves an Oscar for best supporting actor
Agree. Adored that kid
That would be hilarious
Yorkie is literally adorable and so hilarious
Agreed
Best young nick frost impersonator
“The one thing that undermines dictators is humor.” YES YES YES. He hit the nail on the head. During the war, there was so much propaganda that would satirize Hitler and make him look like a fool (and it was effective).
That was an incredibly profound statement. While I was watching him, I thought, "wow. This guy. This guy thinks a lot."
Yep its exactly what Charlie Chaplain did and Mel Brooks later on with the Producers.
I ha e a book of Norwegian satire, jokes and cartoons portraying the Nazis as literal pigs and buffoons. Laughing kept them standing.
we are currently trying to do this to xi jinping 👍🏻👍🏻
Given his directing style, aesthetics and humor, not to mention his acting style, I strongly believe Taika Waititi should direct a movie about Salvador Dalí and he should play him. I'd pay top dollar to see that. Please Variety, let Taika know about this comment. Thanks.
Yes. This.

OhhhhHhhhohhhhohoh Yes
Agreed. Entirely.
You my friend have taken the words right out of my mouth
'Perhaps a little teary eyed" are you kidding I was sobbing my eyes out by the end of this film
The shoes
Naomi L same, I haven’t cried like that at anytime in my adult life. I didn’t actually break down until after the film had finished and I was still sobbing when the lights came on
Same, i cried a lot and idk why i didnt expect myself to cry
get the fvck out I cried because I realised only love matters and I’ve wasted so much time on stuff that isn’t love and doesn’t matter. I am ashamed of the time I’ve wasted not loving but I’m glad to understand this now before I completely wasted my whole life on meaningless bs
I was fine until about halfway through the drive home...
Why is no one talking about how Taika and the kid are literally matching
B U I S N E S S
The girl is 19 and she looks 12 in the movie and 14 here.
@Pais Nublado true History of the kelly gang just google it
what kind of 12 year olds do they have where you're from... I think she looks 17
Dusk Spams Bruh the amount of people I’ve seen sexualizing her and comment about that scene is grossing me out.
@@Duskspams bro you just posted cringe
Fink Skata What scene are you talking about?
This interview instantly becomes 10x funnier when you realize all the adults are stoned 😂
Oh thank goodness. This is the only time I've ever been confused by what Taika was saying, and I thought I was too dumb to understand his esoteric descriptions 😂
I love how stoned Taika, Sam and Stephen are...
Daniel Lasker they are, aren’t they! 😆
Severe red eyes
Well, they’re at the Toronto International Film Festival, and weed is legal in Canada now, so they might be taking advantage of that fact. It’s no different then having a cocktail at a gala now, so for anyone who enjoys that, why not take advantage. For a good chunk of the 20th century, gambling was illegal in most states. But a huge city sprang out of the inhospitable desert of Nevada with people rich and famous flying in to both visit and perform, because it was one of the few places where gambling was legal. You could be a normal person in Las Vegas and gamble without worrying about being seen as a criminal. For those that enjoy weed, Canada is like that now(and Yes, I know that Nevada also legalized recreational weed in 2017. But with it still being treated as something Very bad and illegal at the federal level in the USA, rightly or wrongly that can be enough to discourage/scare off some people). Whoa..typed a lot more then I realized.🤭 Better end this reply before Peter Jackson wants to turn it into 3 movies. 🤔 TLDR...Canada is a fun place to visit 🇨🇦🎈🥳🎉🇨🇦
Daniel Lasker they might be jet-lagged?
@@popepenka8334 They are indeed haha, can tell not just by their red and glazed eyes, but also their behaviour. Taika is always wacky and fun, so its not as noticeable with him. But Stephen is really struggling to hide it hahaha. I couldn't stop laughing! Especially 2:20! lol
This is the weirdest Calvin and Hobbes remake I have ever seen.
LOL!!! Good thing I had already swallowed my drink when I read this
Hol up
Whoa. They finally made one
Hey theres an idea! Roman as calvin! If willem dafoe always dies in his movied, roman'll get typecasted as the boy with an imaginary friend.
I think you meant to comment this on a Secret Life if Pi video lmao
2011: no 2012: still no watititi 2017: Fox: we’ll make it

I bursted out laughing when he said "it's about a little boy and nazi Germany, wants to be the best nazi he can" lol
@FilmMagician funny cause i'm still *PUKING* after watching that trailer
@@Generalbas1972 why were you puking?
That explains the film so accurately Oh i mean only the first half, the ending is a tear jerker
@@Generalbas1972 the movie is truly amazing! your loss, I guess...
@@cheshirecat1611 it's not. it's *garbage*
Where's Yorky?? That little dumpling was absolutely adorable!
Maybe this is random, but the soundtrack of the movie was brilliant too, it showed me that a period piece didn't have to necessarily have old music from the era to make it more believable, the story of Jojo itself was well written enough for the story to be real but still be uplifted by the soundtrack, amazing work all around.
I’m 99.99% sure it won the Grammy for best soundtrack
I couldn't be happier than to see the stars have aligned for Taika Waititi and Stephen Merchant to work together. Two incredible comedic minds, so dry & sardonic. A perfect storm. I hope this isn't the only time.
Well said!
4:10 almost teary eyed? Almost tears eyed? ALMOST TEARY EYED! I do not ever cry at movies, like ever, the most I do is get a little soggy in my eyes. But this movie? I was bawling by the end, tears streaming down my face, while I also laughed at the amazing jokes. This is one of the most beautiful movies I’ve ever seen and I applaud the whole cast.
Your local Death sticks dealer same. I haven’t cried like that in my entire adult life. I didn’t breakdown until the movie had finished. I was still sobbing when the lights came on
Last time i saw people this high, we were in an airplane
My my my, we have a live one in here!
“A kid, and his imaginary friend is Hitler and he.... discovers stuff” 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I can’t wait to see this movie.
Neither can I.
Job Acevedo it’s seems funny
It actually looks amazing
Job Acevedo I do like the idea of a kid in the hitler youth who's imaginary friend is hitler, who is realising he shouldn't be in the hitler youth
Fox will release it in North America on October 18th.
I like how the kid is humble and truthful, when asked what he thought about the script, he just said that he couldn't have an opinion since it was the first the only thing he have ever read. Honesty like this is very rare in young actors. Maybe in actors in general.
From my multiple viewings of the trailer, I would say this looks like a movie that talks to how hate is taught to us, but not inherently in us.
Yeah spot on
That is a cool way to look at it
ExposedKitten 8254 So, so deep. It took all my years of philosophy classes to get that basic line out. It wasn’t at all an obvious point that may be staring back at me after multiple viewings! Thanks for catching all the hours of effort I poured into that comment!
Guess if it sounds complicated and smart then the rich dumbasses can pretend that its the smartest thing ever?
Wouldn't it inherently have to be in us for the first person to teach it to others?
Love how Roman dressed and styled his hair after Taika you can tell he really looks up to him.
B U I S N E S S
This interview is 10 times more funny once you realize Taika, Merchant and Rockwell are BLAZED out of their minds 😂😂😂
It was refreshing to see Taika actually answer questions and be genuine about his work instead of just the endearingly eccentric character he always puts on. I'm excited to see this.
This is what happens when you loose a war, people make funny movies about you.
Yup
Cough tropic thunder cough
If that is the case where are all the Vietnamese comedies about America?
@@littlesebastian4389 Hollywood is controlled by the US and Israeli elite they don't make good movies about anyone who opposes them.
That explains why there are alot of comedys about the US Its a joke chill
Thomasin is one of the most beautiful people to ever walk the earth
Agree
Taika looks very stoned in a lot of recent interviews.
That's just his natural look... ;)
His eyes are so glossy. He’s either tired or stoned. I’m going with stoned.
Sharpe1502 dude look at Stephen merchants eyes! Lmao of course they’re high
He is probably being worked to death
He’s been working on Jojo, a sports biopic and Thor Love And Thunder for months on end of course he’s tired and or doing drugs
I’m a simple man, I see Taika, I think “you know what? i’d love to hear korg’s voice again...” and I click.
Ironically I read this comment in korgs voice...
Lol, instead we get a Johnny Depp "Mortdecai" impression... _s'not bad tho_
Taika reminds me of Jack Sparrow lmao
disney, just make taika as new jack sparrow...
I was about to say that before I saw this comment.
I see RDJ.
Damn I was thinking that he reminded me of someone but couldn't figure out who it was. Thanks for the enlightening
Taika is an absolute GENIUS. Anyone who had seen his work on flight of the Conchords could have told you that decades ago.
I just realised the 2 kids in this, the main child and his bigger dark haired friend could be seen as Simon Pegg and Nick Frost !
Waititi, merchant and rockwell....take my money
The chemistry between the entire cast is amazing
he is one of the few directors who is actually truly passionate about his project. I respect him
Funny how he went from What We Do in the Shadows, to Thor, to this.... interesting filmography. Cannot wait to see what else this guy does next!
Saw the film last night. Every actor in the film was brilliant. Sam Rockwell continues to impress.
4:09 😂😭😂😭😂 Let's be honest... this was straight facts!! You would never think the way Taika talks and acts in a lot of his interviews could produce such amazing pieces of filmography we have seen in a very looong time
The dude really knows how to make tragic comedies and happy sad movies. Boy, Hunt for the Wilder People, What We Do in the Shadows and Eagle vs Shark are all brilliant :) Though yeah he seems baked in all his interviews lmao
Taika waititi is a goddamn universal treasure Hunt for wilderpeople is my fave happy sad movie
Boy is another great one
I’ve never heard someone call a movie happy sad movie
Harsh Patil Im a shame to say but i just saw Hunt for the Wilderness couple of months ago. I freakin loved it.
Josh Stewart Happy sad is Taika Waititi’s speciality. He gives you a sad situation in a movie and finds humor in it.
Hell yeah
I saw this yesterday and it was possibly one of the sweetest, most moving and charming film I’ve ever see.
They all seem so stoned... And the cuts that they do include, this must have been extremely awkward on the recording floor 😅
Taika is a genius and so down to earth. Love him.
One of the best movies I’ve ever seen. It’s a perfect blend of dark absurd comedy that really shines a light on the reality and ludicrous behaviour. I thought it was very tastefully done and it does such a great job at highlighting just how bonkers everything was. It’s always on a knife edge of absurd humour and ominous dark intent. Very well done
Nobody: Sam Rockwell: it was a great script, really well done script, best script I’ve ever read
Stephen's eyes are sooo red, during the closeup i thought he was having a hangover 😂
Poor dudes just baked as fuck
Taika is so kiwi in this interview its unbelievable! And I love it!
This movie is the best! I’m German and I was impressed with how funny and yet respectful it was made. They didn’t go for the cheap jokes or painted the picture that “all Germans were Nazis”. And the German accents were spot on! 😂😂😂
Wait. Taika, Stephen Merchant, Sam Rockwell made a dark comedy about Hitler. Shut up and and make my money!
That's pretty abusive.
Is THAT JUSTIN HAMMERRRR????
the very same.
With korg and Caliban

Well, he ain't wrong. His weird mustache makes him looks lame. X,D
His stand is sentient? Oh no
@erni muja It makes sense (to me) for Charlie Chaplin to have it because he is a comedian. He is suppose to be funny
Rare footage of five people fighting over one brain cell

Wes Anderson vibes. can't wait to see his satire on the slavery period! this cast looks amazing by the way.
And very baked
Moonrise Kingdom came to my mind when I watched the trailer
HarryPirsch007 yeah, the fact that Sam Rockwell seems to be playing literally the same character doesn’t help either 😂
That'd be interesting. Satire on American Slavery has been written and filmed by blacks over the years. Paul Mooney is a great comedy writer.
Yesh!!! 😆 really want to see this. Looks amazing
2012 Fox: you’re about 5 years too early
Go and check out the "Jojo Rabbit" reviews from the critics at TIFF on Twitter. They are freaking loving it. Got a Standing Ovation.
But the rotten tomatoes score is a bit low.....
Saif Mahmud Ishtiak Shushaan It’s ok. Rotten Tomatoes scores aren’t everything. I think quite a few people were turned off from the Nazi stuff.
Aaron Bertrand I don’t know man, I’m just worried that the critics are loving it for being propaganda aimed at them instead of loving it for being a genuinely good movie. Either way I’m hopeful since there hasn’t been any good comedies lately.
@@DiegoDiaz-sv1ng I'm more afraid is the other way around, that because of the topic they will shy away. But like you I'm hopeful it will keep it being steady with the good reviews
@@ABR-9819 Waititi's brand of humor in this movie looked to be a lot more offensive, a lot more off-color, kind of like South Park's humor. It's not going to be for everyone.
Cant wait to see this
It's a good movie. Waititi has a Wes Anderson kinda vibe in this one.
It’s so sweet how much Roman looks up to Taika, the way he watches him when he’s talking :,)
Taika is so brilliant
It is very interesting to me that I was never a big fan of Sam Rockwell, I thought he was a great actor but I personally didn't like him. However, now I adore him! He is so amazing in this movie.
One of the few great directors working today, excited when his name is attached to anything.
Imagine directing a movie in Hitler's uniform.
I see they filmed this on the same day as the IMDB interview
Hello from New Zealand.
Bloody awesome - Kei Te Pai
"During wars, grown ups act like lunatics" funny yet profound 😆
This man is a genius - so glad Hollywood gave him a bunch of $ millions to spread his point of view
This is going to be the best movie of this year
Joker: hold my clown mask
Joker would have been the best of Keith Ledger was playing him. And d/c movies always have script and pacing issues that plague their films.
Yes.. the best. I saw it yesterday.. and omg. I was emotional
a movie crew & cast who arent trying to pretentiously make their movie seem like a renowned work of art but rather have fun with it... will watch
This movie is amazing! Taika does magic. Watched it twice already
Wow their eyes!
1:12 Taika there are children in the room
Can't wait for this...
Thanks for that deep insight Sam Rockwell, just fascinating.
Their take on the Hitler Youth is extremely hilarious. Usually the Hitler Youth are portrayed as fanatical zealots, but here they’re portrayed as cute and silly.
I mean that kid looks exactly what Hitler had in mind for poster child of "Hitler Youth".

I laughed , cried and cringed throughout this film with my 14 year old daughter . She cried too! It's a must watch.
Me: *they don’t look THAT high* Also Me at 2:21: *OH*
Honestly it’s great that this didn’t get made until after Ragnarok, because I’m sure it will be way more successful now with how well he did with turning Thor around as a character.
Now this I need to watch
Absolutely brilliant film, loved it.
He has to be blackmailed to make the next Star Wars trilogy. I’m sorry but Jar Jar Abrams and Rian Johnson did not have that comedic level to make a Star Wars movie.
Not quite making something but he is the droid in the Mandalorian
They are really stoned haha. I can feel the feeling taika is having at some points. That kind of buzzing intensity that makes you feel like you’re going to lift off and your thoughts are racing to get out.
They all look incredibly teary eyed
"don't assume I went in and said I needed money, you don't know the backstory" "what's the backstory?" "I went in and I said I needed money"
So what I'm seeing is that Taika can direct a Marvel movie with Justin Hammer as the villain.
Would love to see Taika direct Russell Crowe (when he's channeling his character from Virtuosity)
Just seen it. Not what you expect. Got to me in a big way. From a history buff a big surprise. Totally awesome.
