I thought they'd be more blown away by Maynard's 25 second scream.
same lol
Very underwhelming reaction to this song. However, understandable. They just need to keep listening to it.
they're black what did you expect?
@@youtubebannedme4207that’s some bullshit thing to say.
@@johnnyb6067 ... their handle is "youtube banned me", did you expect a bastion of reason? Just report for hate speech and move on.
George questioning the groove right before the grooviest section and doubting the payoff right before one of my favorite Tool payoffs was funny to me.
Same here. Stopped before the big payoff to tell us he was waiting for the big payoff. It was frustratingly perfect.
It's like the song heard George talking mad shit and then it replied. 😂
Same. That whole beginning preamble I'm like "Just get to the breakdown guys. Y'all are gonna lose your MINDS over the breakdown!" 😆 Honestly though, I think The Grudge is another one that takes about 2-3 spins before it really sinks its hooks into you. Bet this is one that George and Ryan will wind up saying they LOVE over time.
Not to mention the better help ad opening where he talks about his issue with forgiveness.
Sometimes they need to realize that you pick up the groove the more you hear it. A lot of good music doesn't take completely the first time, they still have room to grow this way.
“Tool makes you reevaluate how you interpret music.” So true.
Yeah that hit hard
The Tool Paradox - music that demands analyzation and interpretation but can only be truly understood when you shut your mind off and listen
hence why its compared to psychadelics so often
Mix both together and it really all comes together
Yeah, reading the lyrics while listening is a bad idea. You need to treat his voice as another instrument and not get caught up in what he is saying
This album was the soundtrack to my Afghanistan deployment in 2001-2002. So strange to piece together these tunes with such a vivid foreign environment under insane stress, but somehow this album fit the times and nearly 25 years later it still brings the wallop of emotions.
That is pretty incredible!
This album and steal my album from SOD. We're my background music for my whole deployment to Iraq in 2003. Still rock both to this day. Reminds of my time there every single time I listen
totally relate with this. 08, my 2nd Iraq tour was when i was introduced to TOOL. helped me get through a lot that year. luckily listening to them now doesn't remind me of my deployments. used to but i had to make a conscious effort to decouple the memories. man, i love music and especially TOOL!
Do Tool - H for the love of god! I think i've put that on every video lol
Best song they have!
100%!!!
For real. H, Prison Sex, Eulogy, Stinkfist, Hooker with a penis. I've been trying to tell them for 5 years lol but it's falling on " def" ears. 👂 pun fully intended 😌

I used to see my buddy love tool and just kinda knock him as a kid for no reason. Well one day I went over and he played h… when I heard the intro I was in…
Tool be Toolin
Two things... 1. That 20ish something second Maynard scream towards the end 2. That drum outro by Danny. Like WTF! 🔥🔥🔥

The Grudge is one of the best tracks ever!!! Not to mention an incredible album opener. You guys should just react to the whole record! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
You may be right, but this is for Tool fans already. Never ever show The Grudge first to any of your friends if you would like them to start listening the band. Seriously.
100%!
With a solid 10 times listening to this song it will become one of their most powerful songs. It grows on you more than most,
100%
I was about to say something similar. It's a keeper!
This. Was my least favorite on Lateralus when I first listened to it and now it's my most played
Took the words right of my mouth friend. EXACTLY like that. Could never pick a favourite Tool song. It's just not possible. If I could The Grudge would be near the top.
Easily. One of their best once you learn their trade.
You guys have immensely grown as critics. The perspectives are on-point.
Justin is so underrated!! One of the best bass players alive!!
You two were some of the first reactors I started listening to during the pandemic. I never said thanks for that. Always here for the TOOL!

Tool - Right In Two PleasepleaseIthankyouILoveyoubye 😁✌️
and Jambi!!
Hell yeah both are amazing
Right in two is one of my favorites, and Jambi just rips!
@@lolotube100 I second Right In Two. I want that song played at my funeral. I would love to see not only their reaction to the musical masterpiece, but also the meaning of it, and their take on it. I'm surprised it hasn't been requested more/already done on this channel.
Lads, we NEED more Tool reactions 🙏
They've done a TON at this point.
I absolutely agree but what do we do when they've burned through all of them?
We make Tool release new music.
That scream …..you feel that in your soul.
Lateralus is a masterpiece. Every song on that album is amazing. Also do Parabol/Parabola off the same album
Honestly they should do reflection that song is the best song on the the album The grudge is second. In the grudge for a long time was number one but reflection man... The song changed how I viewed life
Most powerful drum outro of ANY song EVER!
I agree it is powerful and amazing, but I think ultimately these sort of statements where something is "best ever" are meaningless. You, yourself, might think differently in couple of years once you explore more music.
That was the best ever comment!@@nerijusvilcinskas7851
The drum solo + Maynard's scream + The guitar's distortion is to much for my mortal body to handle.
Vicarious I like better
The drum outro in Schism is pretty amazing too.
This right here is the best TOOL reaction channel. Always fun to watch your videos, mates. 🤝
Check out POLO Reacts
Yeah, these guys are the best. Always entertaining and plenty of thoughtful commentary. Not many reactors can make 30+ minute reactions that really keep my interest.
The Tool fans made them check it out. Now they are fans and even went to a show.
@@desynchonosisdragon9108 Ya he’s awesome. Really like his reacts…these guys get that exact same face 😣😖😫🤣 Along with everyone else who allows themselves to truly listen.
Lol not even close. They do tool maybe once every 18 months. What are you even saying???
When George was talking about how there was nothing in the song that grabbed him (yet), I was waiting for them to get to that transition right after “and sinking… deeper.” That was the part that grabbed me the first time I heard it.
The Grudge - sets the tone of the theme of lateralus perfectly being the opening track. It marks a turning point in Tool’s career even. This album transcends grudges, bitterness, anger and fighting to self reflection, learning, teaching and ultimately self actualization. That 25+ second yell lets out the grudge and bitterness of the past that allows Tool to stop the anger spiral that many get trapped into. Once you ‘let go’ you can actually grow and learn from it and teach others and use the insight gained from life experiences in much more powerful ways..
Imo The Grudge is the theme setter to the whole album. Letting go/change/forgiving one's self and moving on.
Its the GOAT of any album intro. It sets the tone for the whole album
it's not that tight lol

This might be my favourite Tool track at this point, but it definitely wasn't at first. But the more familiar I became with it the harder and harder it hit until it's now like pure magic to my ears
Tool has always fascinated me. Their music requires much more effort to truly unpack everything. For that reason it doesn’t always click right away as I have to go back many times to really experience the song from different aspects before I can interpret and understand the music. I was fortunate enough to hear Tool live for the 1st time as Ozzfest 2001, UK. They opened with ‘The Grudge’ and I had no idea what hit me. It was going over my head completely. But as I started to watch Danny, Adam and Justin I started to realise how complex and interwoven the music was. Absolutely blew my mind. The Grudge is still and will always be my favourite Tool song for this reason.
The fact that they were aware that you can judge a Tool song too soon in the midst of judging a tool song too soon was amazing. Love how self-aware these guys are.
Yeah they remind me of me listening to metal in the 80's for the first time. That's what makes their reaction genuine and real , it's like listening to the songs the first time again when I watch them react...
Imagine being 19/20 years old, driving to a "CD" shop hungover, opening this record (amazed by the artwork), popping it in your CD player, and going on an amazing journey of probably the best rock album ever! I remember it to this day (41 years old now)
We’re the same age…and I remember going to the mall to buy this CD with crazy anticipation and excitement. The day it came out .That was a different time, buying the CD and opening up the artwork! Still my favorite band, no question.
nice! I was in high school when this came out and remember being so hyped to buy it. then they played a show in my city later that year just to top it off
That was me
Right there with you! I’m 40
I remember being 13 or so opening 10,000 days and messing with the weird magnifying glasses depth perception thing they had with the artwork package. Nothing in the world like absorbing the art in the music with their physical art too
I love what Ryan said about having to listen to fear innoculum first before going into pneuma 😁😁.
AHHH! Someone actually talked about Justin and mentioned him by name! I see Tool occupying the same sort of space musically that some classical music occupies, or great works of art or literature. Sometimes it asks more of the listener/viewer/reader when they try to engage with it - more attention, more thought, more presence - and rewards them for doing so.
I absolutely love seeing you guys react to my favorite music in real time. Lateralus is literally my favorite album of all time, and The Grudge is such a perfect opening song for the album, and it's even more amazing to witness being played live. It's probably one of my favorite songs lyrically from them as well!
Tool is best listened to in chronological order.
If you understand all that came before it, Pneuma is just not anywhere near their best work.
@@joshs8685it’s still music, therefore it’s still subjective. I’ve been a tool fan for 2.5 decades - pneuma is one of my favorite tracks from them.
Tool is a grower, every track matures the more times you listen, as one commenter I saw said on a Tool reaction, " Tool are the musical 'just the tip' masters "
💯
"Tool are the musical 'just the tip' masters" HAH, never heard that but so damned true XD XD XD
Man.. I've been waiting so long for you guys to get to this one! 🎉
definitley a TOP 5 tooliest TOOL song. it grows on you over time, like a grudge... huh. one of my favorites both musical and lyrical
@25:15 Ryan grasps with the idea behind concept albums, Tool is masterful in doing them.
Funny thing they were saying that this song lacks a payoff moment and it’s literally the Tool song with the best payoff moment lol
The commentary on this song is insanely frustrating for this reason. One problem is that this song has a lot of forward momentum and is a slow build so pausing it so often for so long is a huge disservice
Thank you !!
@@christinschumacher2143had to stop listening to their reaction
this is probably the biggest grower in the catalog - but even so, ryan has always latched onto his first reaction and George tends to over-analyze and I feel like both have long been too concerned with what they're going to say rather than actively listening. I don't really even want to watch this since I'm 95% sure Ryan will talk about not being able to groove and that take is becoming pretty grating after five years of it lol.
@@SouthernCross_ it me instantly when I first put it on when album released. But yeah it’s a trigger and didn’t even watch half
Next step has to be Parabol + Parabola
The only 4/4 one hahahah
The key is almost impossible to get on the first listen; how well the story ties to the music. Quiet rage, repetitive mantra, seething, outburst, reflection, release. Even better when you know their writing style. They recorded the track before Maynard's lyrics and he pulled that story from what he felt while listening. Perfection.
Their music is the gift that keeps giving. Any song can be the star of the show if you cycle through their albums. What you once thought you didn’t like can become your favorite listen. Keeps happening over and over for me.
The Saturn comes back around lyric is in reference to Saturn's orbit around the sun which takes about 28 years, and what Maynard is basically conveying is that this is the age where you should be able to realize what it is that you're holding on to and refusing to let go, and you can either try and move past it, or hold on to them for the rest of your life. That's basically the gist of it, with a little wiggle room of a bit broader interpretation.
Tool is the only band whose best song is the one you're currently listening to
That’s exactly how I feel, I’ve been listening to them since the early 90s and I couldn’t tell you my favorite. It always seems to be whichever one I’m listening to at the time. in my opinion, they’re the best band in human history, each one of them is a master of their own parts and together they make the best band ever.
whose*
Jambi might be top for me, maybe Vicarious
That's what I always say. Never ask me my favorite Tool song, dude. I will just freeze from choice paralysis.
Preach brother
I think the vocals, lyrics, and meaning behind this song are the highlight. The instrumentals make more sense when thought of as a soundtrack to the story of "the grudge".
A Saturn Return happens approximately every 29.5 years (i.e., the duration of Saturn's orbit around the sun), which means it lands in the same place in the sky it did when you were born roughly around the time you turn 29. Generally, it “returns” for approximately 2.5 to three years.
What does it mean ?
@@thematthatter1910 Hahaha I'm not really sure! I guess it's a point of reflection & progression in ones life but tbh I'm not sure what it means within the context of the song but that is what Maynard is referring to.
@@thematthatter1910Each return of Saturn is thought to be the line of demarcation for a new phase of life. With challenges for growth and opportunities to learn. A step in maturity, if you will. In Hinduism it's said to be common for people to be anxious and confused or having personal dilemmas or questions of faith in the period of time surrounding these moments.
And his scream was 29 seconds. Coincidence?
@@mikepshena I didn't know it was 29 seconds! If that's true, knowing Tool I very much doubt it's a coincidence!
This song has the greatest primal scream in history.
Even if its not your favorite so hype to see more tool on this channel 🎉❤
You guys are the first time I've ever subscribed to a channel by only watching your ad plug. Love it. Already excited for the rest of this video.
That's what beautiful about Tool ....... You said it, it's not the first time you hear it, it's the 1 millionth time you hear it. It's the beauty of it!!! Enjoy every time u hear it, it just gets better 😅

Same here guys, I've been a fan of them for two decades and it always takes me several listens of their albums to really dig in. I grabbed this album at midnight on the release day and can still remember how I felt when I listened for the first time.
Tick and leeches has to be reviewed!
Been asking for that for a while
Man I’ve been waiting for this!
Probably the best drum outro ever.
Right in two/ jambi!!
When I first heard this song I was at the beginning of my Tool journey so I overlooked it for the a long time because Lateralus was the album I first listened to when it came out. So I was posed with their whole catalog up to that point. But when I came back around to this song it became one of my all time favorites. It’s a journey until the end for me and then the end is one of the greatest moments for me in music. From the scream to the build of Maynard chanting Let Go! Until the amazing display of skill by Danny is just some the greatest I’ve ever heard and still gets me going after all the listens and years I’ve heard
Keep pressing that replay button. You'll both be singing this song like it was the best tune you ever heard! Trust me!
Right in Two must be the next Tool reaction. It's been long enough lol
6:25. "TOOL is TOOLIN'!!!" LMAO!!!!!😆🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This song has always reminded me of drowning. Gasping for breath, panicking, struggling and moments of relief. One of my all time favourites.
This is my favorite Tool song.
Always happy to see you experience a new TOOL track! 🔧

Need to do Eulogy off of Aenima.
Best song on the album imo!

1 hour ago I was seeing The Pot episode, randomly. Thanks.
I would love to see you react to Rosetta Stoned from 10,000 days. It’s a bit out there, and i never loved it compared to the rest of the album, but then one day I heard it and it’s become one of my most listened tracks by them.
Rosetta Stoned never grabbed me until I happened to hear it while Rosetta sto.... well you get the point.
Great song but not a good recommendation for these guys
Never understand why people suggest that song. It’s just not a reaction listen. It’s off-putting first time through.
This song has a great message. The only person a grudge hurts is the person holding it. It's like a hot iron in your hands. It's going to keep hurting you until you drop it.
one of their best songs and definitely the best album opener
I doubt this is anyones favorite Tool song upon first listen; there is much going on musically and lyrically that it can be tough to get into. After over 20 years of listening to Tool, however, this is my absolute favorite song. The message is simple, but so necessary.
Damn this track is absolute powerful, devastating.
I love the message and the lyrics of the song. Let the grudge go, don't let it drag you down like a stone. Turn it into something good, turn it to gold.
Be patient - those Grudge grooves will get stuck in your heads after a few more listens. 😃
I must keep reminding myself of this…
"Saturn comes back around to show you everything Let's you choose what you will and will not see and then Drags you down like a stone or lifts you up again Spits you out like a child, light and innocent" Yes it has astrological reference, but the direct words seem to me to point to more the symbol of Saturn and what it represents, rather than a specific Astrological "movement" Saturn is seen as the bringer of Karma/cycles throughout your life, also the ruler of material which is the second line in this section,. The "Drags you down like a stone", Saturn is also considered "the Teacher" through lessons in life and also lord of time, and this line is IMO a reference to these aspects, and also Saturn's mass, it has a similar affect in the Solar system, it drags lesser planets a little (as does Jupiter ...who was son of Saturn to the Romans, and the only one of Saturn's offspring that escaped being eaten by Saturn) The last part about "Spits you out like a child, light and innocent" is a reference to the Roman God Saturn mythology of him eatinghis own off spring, because he feared they would over throw him, but in this line Saturn is spitting the child out, so possibly a birth metaphor a section of lyrics prior "Clutch it like a cornerstone, otherwise it all comes down Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end Saturn ascends, comes round again Saturn ascends, the one, the ten Ignorant to the damage done" The Ascends are astrological movement references which are meant to bring back unresolved Karma, cyclical patterns in a persons life, in this case the unresolved issue would be "the Grudge" . "the One the Ten" 10 is associated with Saturn, and in numerology and the Tarot 1 is the beginning of a Journey and 10 is completion of a journey, its a very poetic and metaphorical ways of saying "from beginning to end" and also that every beginning is an end and every end is a beginning. A Grudge is absolutely associated with Saturn in Astrology Tarot etc. Its would be deemed "Saturnian" in traits, and Saturn is associated with Capricorn which is the root of the word "Capricious", and Saturn was certainly a Capricious god in Roman mythology (for Greek gods switch Kronos for Saturn and Zeus for Jupiter everything still has the same symbolism and meanings)
Tool and The Mars Volta were two bands where after I got into them I would always give music that is new to me a second or even third chance. It's exactly what Ryan described here with the Matrix thing.
The Mars volta deserves more love.
Was waiting for this!
You guys are awesome. Been listening to you for years. Tool is my favorite band
About time! Also, Ryan and I have the same feelings for Pneuma. I have to listen to Fear Innoculum first as well. Hell yeah man 🤙
that pause right before the scream gave me aural blueballs.

Due to what was said at around the 24:27 mark, I truly believe that yall would enjoy parabol and parabola in that order.
They love the transitions...doesn't get much better than the transition between parabol and parabola.
TOOL hype!
KZhead it filled with reaction channels and none of them is as good as yours. You are so genuine honest and true it's a pleasure to absorb you
As someone who has listened to them since I was a kid, I will say that hearing them for the first time was FULL intrigue
guys.... 2 minutes in, even before the reaction. , much respect for the help offering for people with mental health issues as well as being open about your own issues. much needed in the world and thank you again. .... now on with the reaction. ...
Crazy George's intro for Betterhelp is exactly what this song is about. I 100% agree with the groove commentary. One of my favorite things about a new Tool song is not knowing where it's going and sort of being "lost" on my first journey through. I'm sure that same thing makes reactions tough. Appreciate you guys!
That’s why this is the only channel where their reactions seem genuine. I rarely ever love a Tool song on first listen.
Was thinking the exact same re Betterhelp. The way George feels about this song is how it’s supposed to feel because it’s a tightly wound knot that needs to come unraveled. Perfect comment from Ryan that this is setting the tone as an opener. It’s a state to pass through. Let go.
Tool designs their music to be listened as an album, an overall experience beginning to end.
being a long time TOOL fan, saw them live once and was best concert ever i went to. So happy to see this band get new fans, love that this epic band is getting more love.
ITS ABOUT DAMN TIME THANK YOU!!!!!!!!❤️🔥
This is a song for Tool fans. Not for music fans. It is songs like these that separates casual fans from hardcore ones. The gatekeepers will tell you. " If you get this song, then you get Tool." But the break down is just amazing.
A lot of Tool fans turn a lot of people off of Tool. It's a shame.
I think it's more of being able to catch a groove that's a bit obfuscated and hidden, plus being solidly in 5/4 (or 10/8) the entire time. The time signature never changes but Danny doesn't show where the groove is until well into the second half
stop with this cringe bs. They just don’t like the song period thats it
elitist bs.
😂
Based on what you’ve liked from TOOL, you’d love Ticks & Leeches. A behemoth of a song
I've been listening to you guys for the better part of a year. Some of my favorite bands include tool led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd rage against the machine, Alice in chains and ZZ top. I think you guys need to go back to the enema album and have a listen to h, eulogy, stinkfist. I can't remember what song the patient is on but you should have a listen to that as well. And try right in two off the 10,000 Days album. And I heard your review on stairway to heaven by led Zeppelin. It is an incredible song, but I think you guys need to listen to more led Zeppelin cuz stairway to heaven is not even close to their best song. It's just their most popular one.
15:03 The very first time I hard this riff (Defining! Confining! And sinking deeper!) I thought it was the heaviest riff imaginable. 20+ years later, I'm still crushed by this riff every time it drops. And the drop-in just makes it even heavier. Absolutely devastating riff. Glad you guys finally got to this one. Keep listening to it, because it definitely grows on you. Tool is one of those bands that teach the listener patience. For many pieces of music, you have to listen to it to the very end to fully grok it.
There's such a groove to this song, and once you feel it you'll feel it. You can definitely headbob to this entire song I promise. It's a slow headbob even though the tempo feels faster. A halftime headbob. I know I can't put the groove in your head with words but definitely consider sitting with it. WEAR the GRUDGE like a CROWN. of NEGaTIVity, LET'S you CHOOSE what you WILL, and WILL not TOLerate... (Okay this is my attempt, try headbobbing to the capitalized parts)
It's 5/4. Simple.
Yes!!!!!
Lateralus is also on the Fibonacci sequence. Also the way they work is Adam, Danny and Justin make the music then send it to Maynard and he then writes the lyrics after listening to each song over a span of weeks for each track
My first observation has nothing to do with your reaction, but with your sponsor. As a combat veteran myself and many of my friends have or are still dealing with mental health issues that are mostly misunderstood. It doesn't help that as a 64 year old man I was raised to believe that men don't share their feelings, and then having spent 15 years in the army we were made to understand that seeking help was a sign of weakness. Even today when we seek help while dealing with PTSD we are made to feel shame which keeps many (including me) from seeking the help they really need. Thanks for allowing them to sponsor this video and I hope it will help at least one of your subscribers.
Ryan’s mic is off. Good thing he’s getting picked up on George’s mic.
The fact that Better Help sponsored this song specifically (Let go let go let go) is phenomenal
This song and 'The Patient' are my two favorite Tool songs. It definitely needs multiple listenings to fully digest it tho, but when it does... it's so good. And 'The Patient' is beautiful, I highly suggest it, you guys will like it.
This took me a while to love too. But… the absolute best drop in tools discography! Sinking. Deeper!
Been a hot minute since we’ve seen a metal reaction 🔥
