Northern Bank Robbery | Britain's Biggest Heists | S2E04
In 2004 a gang in Northern Ireland managed to execute one of the most audacious robberies in the world. A violent group kidnapped staff of the Northern Bank in Belfast and held their families hostage. In an elaborate plot, they ordered the staff to steal over £26 million, walking straight out of the bank with the money. In an unprecedented move, the Irish Government issued new notes in the country, to try and flush out the stolen money, but to little avail. In a robbery so calculated that not one of the thieves stepped into the bank to take the loot, none of the stolen cash has since been recovered and the thieves still remain at large.

Great documentary 💯🍿
Great video! The robbers certainly did their homework very well. They had to have been studying the bank for a long time. Since no one expected the bank to be robbed I think it was relatively easy for the robbers to figure many things ot. I wonder if the robbers had time to launder the money they stole. It was some time after the robbery that the bank decided to print new bank notes. That in itself would have taken some time to do. So by that time maybe the money had been put into offshore accounts.
I think the narrator said that 17 million was in new notes and they had the serial numbers. That none of those serial numbers ever showed up anywhere in the world. That 9 million was in old bills, so the robbers could have used the 9 million.
Love watching these heists docs. Thanks for the upload! Keep them coming! 👍🏽
A very interesting documentary
Actually one of the best heist ever, I don't agree with taking people hostage but robbing it without stepping foot in reduce your risk of being caught substantially
Was called a tiger kidnapping then
Lol good luck 2 the robbers lol
Id say Lee Murray took a few tricks from this robbery.
Lee Murray is a legend
The fact that Kevin could take the money out from the bank so easily is concerning
Excellent process.
The interesting fact that 70k from this robbery ended up in gerry hutchs bank account that he could not explain
Nasty and never solved. Involving reprinting all the bills of an entire country. I guess the security company should be looked into more carefully, allowing the cctv to be broken for a month. Also alerting that. : "You're white rubbish van comes back for a 2:nd run." But so many powerful people were proly involved that it had to be solved this way. Just look at the guy who DID change the schedules. Very conveniant. He certainly did nothing to fix the broken cctv. For a month.
Actually it wasn’t all the bills of an entire country. Northern Ireland is unusual in that it has no national banknotes, instead, 4 private banks each print their own unique set of banknotes which are all used interchangeably with one another, along with Bank of England notes from England. So in other words, for every denomination there are 5 completely different designs in circulation at the same time. It was only one of these ( the ‘Northern’ bank variety ) that was reprinted, as the vast majority of banknotes stolen in the raid were the ‘Northern’ designs ( and also because Northern bank has no power to tell the other 3 banks + the Bank of England to go and reprint all their money)
Over the years I've found some pre robbery Northern Bank notes 😎 , most people exchanged theirs, so they may be worth a few ££ to collectors in years to come

Belfast isn’t in Britain, therefore this wasn’t a “British robbery”.
You are correct. It was a robbery within the United Kingdom, not Britain.
it is within the uk and to many british is interchangable, especially in a tv format where they dont have to be as correct as in a book or paper. but well done on a very pedantic observation
@@mongobubongo834 It’s clearly within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Many none too bright English see many things as “interchangeable”, which aren’t at all. Ever been to a Scotland v England rugby match where many of them arrive carrying Union Flags, somehow imagining it to be the English flag? Far from pedantic, it’s a very well defined and vitally important legal distinction, with real implications for the bigoted nonsense that is brexit.
this is why they make the documentaries and you write pedantic comments
@@mongobubongo834 Documentaries are meant to be factual. Clearly, the distinction is wasted on you, as a result of your obvious challenges with English language literacy.

Northern Ireland is part of the UK but it is not physically part of the Island of Britain.
At least it brought peace and order to the country governance. Thank God there was no loss of life. Not all bad looking situations turn out to be BAD after all!!!

The New RUC, the new name will never hide the old crime's.
Ok so apparently it's not really solved.
That's what it says in the description....so yes. You must have been a detective on the case.

This is one of the many reasons as to why weare going to a cashless society
Cashless society is impossible to be honest, we can't have a one form of payments method that's in a digital format, if there was a financial hack all systems would be shut down and nobody could buy anything, it can't work, digital systems fail or go down software wise also it just cant work as its to risky, and financial hacks are more sophisticated these days it's just to risky and simply can't work, plus the volume of cash in circulation or lack of determines the current markets

You mean that everyone had to change their old bank notes? WTF
I guess Chris Ward's solicitor will be played by Matt Damon.
So although the police intensely searched for clues for months on end and nothing turned up tells me the robbery was extraordinarily professional. In most of the videos I have seen sooner or later a clue or clues show up. For example, somebody gets in trouble with the law and then starts talking about the robbery to get a reduced sentence. Another example is when someone starts spending a lot of money - they buy a new car or a new house. It may be that a snitch overhears something. But in this case no clues showed up. Hence it was a very professional robbery - the best I have ever seen.
The IRA have been playing cat & mouse with M15/Special Branch for decades. They aren't fly by night robbers. They seen it as a military operation & conducted it as such.
I think it was done for political purposes not for the money. The robbers may have been SAS not IRA.

The more vehemently something is denied the more you know it was them. TD or Total Denial is a strategy that really works - where evidence apart from rumour or purely circumstantial evidence is all the authorities have.
They caught a SF member down in cork burning banknotes from t robbery, so almost certainly ira/sf
Not true. People who are falsely accused can get very aggressive and belligerent and will defend their innocence vociferously. Police will often not even administer lie detector tests when people demand them to prove their innocence. The police know they are dealing with an innocent person.
Thank God they didn't kill anyone 🙏
Proving it,s just Paper 😏
All the so-called hostages were in on the plan or at least on of them. The two bankers cannot claim to be too terrified to alert the authorities because they had almost 24 hours to calm down and take that rational decision. At least the authorities would have been able to track the robbers to where they were taking the money to without interfering with the heist to save their families. Unbelievable!
Doesn't matter if you have a week in the Maldives to calm down. They *KNOW* not to fu
