  • This is the best lesson on a backhand drive ever. It was tears to master the shot. What my coaches never emphasized is, to move so the ball is in the middle of my stomach. On the white line, almost every coach will suggest you use your forehand.

    • Thank you!! That is very kind of you to say that :) Yeah middle of the body is the easiest way to return this shot when learning :) and the whole thing about the middle of the line forehand attack is more build for players who want to be competitive / high performing players. That is nothing bad, but not everyone wants to do that.

  • Here is a little tips once a TT teacher told me. While hitting the backhand, instead of exactly the middle, aim slightly left of the ball. It gives a natural 'roll' and top-spin. The resultant loop helps to keep the ball on the board even if it is hit relatively hard. Also for hitting straight or down-the-line, I move the elbow a little forward, a little sqarish to the ball. Pl let me know your opinion.

    @abed83a@abed83a2 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah the trick of hitting left to the body is for more intermediate to advance level. It works really well for backhand loops :) As for beginners consistency of correct follow through is easier achievable to hit it at the body. Plus blocking is more done more so middle of the body / front of it. I get what you mean when you hit more side of you cause it also benefits if you have the footwork to hit a forehand from a ball that is going towards your body :) Also, the elbow is a smart move, but not as easy to achieve if the footwork ain't there. I try to focus on my follow through and a small / shorter swing of it. Make a snappy follow through end also help to go down the line :)

    • You got this :) Take your time and do not rush. If you can before rallying with someone else, do like 3-5 quick drop and hit balls to them before you get started. To get that motion going. It is always helpful to refresh your touch / technique and quality quickly before playing. And if in real life ball with a partner is going a lot harder to be consistent don't be shy to ask for a slower ball OR back away from the table to give yourself more time to react :)

  • This is the best video explaining backhand drive! Thank you! One question tho: I have heard people say that drives should have no spin because it is not a topspin shot. I sometimes see people playing a drive by just moving the racket forward without the “roll motion”. But then again I also hear from others that the drive should have a bit of spin like a “light topspin”. Which do you think is true?

    @timoernst@timoernst Жыл бұрын
    • Thanks Timo for your comment! Drive with no spin, is an old school term and result of the old version of the BH. Which is not "wrong", but it's outdated. Now as you can see that Pro / YT tutorials is ALL about the correct and full use of body parts. Using the arm in its full potential follow through will ALWAYS create some level of topspin. Do not even need wrist to do so. I believe both are correct as both are two different style of techniques. You choose which one works for you :) The standard now is the modern technique way of using more body parts. Like ALL of my videos are using this pre-made racket that is a 4 star quality! Which shows and emphasis how if done properly your body can improve you soo much before you even switch to a faster racket or even go to gym :)

      @DublinTableTennisClub@DublinTableTennisClub Жыл бұрын
    • @@DublinTableTennisClub That's some good info! Makes me want to ask you, can you recommend 2 or 3 custom racket combos of the blade and rubbers for folks who are beginners to intermediate? I used to play TT in school at a good level but now just started playing TT after 27 years...Overwhelmed with the TT racket options and being slightly carried away, I went for a 5+2 carbon blade (Andro Trieber CO OFF/S) with an Andro Rasanter R48 on forehand and Andro hexer powergrip on backhand. While my game has seen some improvement, I still feel that the racket is a little fast and difficult to control. The returns are not consistent and blocks to heavy topspins from opponents tend to fly away if the racket is not angled correctly. So if you could do an unbiased video on some fantastic racket combos that will help improve technique, give more control and spin rather than speed and that are easy on the pocket as well, I would be very grateful!

    @paolosweendog6530@paolosweendog65303 жыл бұрын
    • Wow long time for sure. Don't go buy the most expensive racket as the speed on these new ones is really really quick. What made you come back to the sport :)? This would be a standard backhand drive. Close the racket more with this technique and you can easily create more topspin. Are you referring to backhand topspin which you use to counter backspin balls?

    • @@DublinTableTennisClub Thanks for replying so quickly! Im 42. I played TT/had some coaching when i was 12. lol. I've did triathlons for many years but cant cycle or run due to injury, and as ive dabble in TT on and off all my life (i,e. playing with firends in pubs) i thought as ive always love it i'd take it up again. Its a mazing game. :) So, I started playing on the city outdoor tables but sometimes they are full so my housemate just bought a decent outdoor table. I bought a all around bat from Bribart and a winning loop. I've just bought a Robo Pong 2001 second hand from ebay. Im really keen to work on the basics and so videos like yours are really useful. Due to COVID and restarting my TT fun i dont have a regular partner. I understand no its the bankhand drive. I deffo dont know what shots are played agaist what spins yet. I guess i was wondering of the differeces bwtween bnak hand drive and forehand. Prior to watching your video i had found Tom Loziak's which are good. I dounds your searching for a basic video on hand hand topspin. As a former coach myself (running and cycling) you video has a number of really good teaching points Tom's does not for bank hand drive. Keep it up. I was thinking of paying for tabletennisdaily to learn the basics but im not sure. Any recomendations?

    • @@paolosweendog6530 What a commitment :) Good starting racket for sure to help you more focus on technique. Basically if you can't do it with that racket it means you aren't ready to step up to more personal set up of a racket. Yes Tom's videos are handy and as a young player 10 ish years ago I used to watch also PingSkills. Coaches from Australia who also give simple context look on techniques. Check them out :) You can't do no wrong with them. And robot is really good investment. Do not put high setting for the repetition. Start of with having the ball come at you 1.5sec per ball. Work your way down with perfecting the timing and consistency. I have the RoboPong 2050 so I say you should be able to adjust that. If you struggle with something email me dublinttc@gmail.com the details and or a video and I can coach you if you wish :)

    • I have a done a video on that on my channel that you can easily find. But, in summary the 1st step is lower more at table height or even lower. With 2nd step the elbow "anchors" and use your forearm the same, but more with momentum and light brush on the ball. Then 3rd step stays more or less the same, but you can get away of not following through as much, but still about 70-80% Again, check out the video on that in the channel :)

    @jessyowens2550@jessyowens25502 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks for your comment :) Great one! Drive is a standard shot to use to counter opponents ball that have a good easy height and top-spin action on the ball. Any player at any level technically can do a drive because they hit the ball back to opponent TopSpin is more complex and higher level. It is more used to counter opponents ball which has a different spin like backspin or sidespin. So you are creating your own spin and making an attack by doing so. It is also referred as "quality" of a shot / technique. Putting topspin on a ball means you hit the ball top of it and create more spin and speed

    @lakshmansarma5924@lakshmansarma59242 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah to counter that ball you need the advance technique called “backhand loop / topspin” You drop your racket / arm below the table. Your wrist lines up with the table (that low) with an open rubber. Make contact going from down and up to a standard follow through :) It is quite hard with its timing so it is more of an intermediate + level. That is the only way you can really effectively and consistently counter a backspin / chopped ball that comes at you. I will do a tutorial on that sometime soon :)
