A zone can often times create poor shots, bad ball movement, and all together unsuccessful offensive possessions when teams get fixated on running a play that's supposed to create one specific open shot.
In this video, we breakdown the goal(s) of 2-3 Zone, what the most critical area on the floor is for the offense, and different ways to expose the way a defense has to rotate in their 2-3 Zone.
Specifically, we will cover;
1. The 3 keys of 2-3 Zone Defense
2. The #1 killer of 2-3 Zone
3. Different ways to pick apart a zone after getting the ball to the high post
4. Using dribble penetration to get the ball to the high post area
5. The importance of shot fakes when playing against a zone

I LOVE what you said at the end!!! “Get a Playmaker in the high post and someone in the dunker spot and PLAY BASKETBALL!” Players aren’t robots 🤖 , give them a framework to play from and let them figure it out.
Completely agree.
Dunker spot isn’t great has it the 2-3 unless you have someone with a lot of size and athleticism. It’s more practice to have someone run the baseline
One of the best things I’ve learned early in my coaching career is a mix of set plays as well as freelance sets. Run plays if the offense has gotten stagnant or you need to stop a run, but let the boys set up in a set and hoop if things are already working. Against a 2-3 I have a simple set with my best mid range shooter and playmaker at the ft line and my guys work it around the perimeter until they can get it to him, once he gets it both corners cut and the wings replace corner. A good shot happens every single time because they can let the game come to them.
What I’ve been preaching! Love this comment.
I needed this, I'm pretty much a slasher so playing against this defense is annoying as heck
Happy to help! Keep workin on your game
Remember you slashing , even when not getting the pass or making s bucket. That simply you being s threat slashing thru makes the defense have to follow or cover. I was a slasher and sometimes a hard backdoorcut that catches a defender off . Will leave your teammate wide open behind you. When it's depressing and taking u out of the game count those maneuvers as assists . Had u not made urself a threat every possession you wouldn't have teammates as open. The slasher also gets the love back when a shooter on ur team is torching them. They will jump to get there faster, and if u time your slash right the defense opens a wonderful gap up for you. And you can get those looks your wanting and best at.
A basic overload and a high IQ 4 in the high post destroys most 2-3 zones. Setting up the perimeter shooters and providing opportunities for offensive rebounding (defensive rebounding is the Achilles heel of any zone defense) is all you need. Great video!
Agreed! Thanks for the comment
Why tf am I watching this I have a final in 9 hours
Haha good luck this morning. If it’s a class on basketball - I have a feel you’re gonna do great.
This has changed the NBA, watching them transition between zones, traps and man cover is fascinating.
Keep posting bro, you underrated asf. I really learned a lot, especially for us Filipinos who use 2-3 zone all the time, now I know how to break zone all the time
I appreciate it! Will be posting a lot once the year starts. Didn’t realize there was a lot of zone defense where you’re at. Good information to know. Thanks for supporting the channel.
@@TheFilmRoom1zone defense is the only thing ran in the philippine pickup and amateur scene 😆 same reason i’m here! this is a good video to watch and learn from
Best way to best a zone is also screening the top of the zone from the wings, allowing the perimeter players to slash and put pressure on the defense. Keep up the good work my guy.
I appreciate it! In the video on for set plays vs 2-3 I put a few ballscreen options in there. You’re right, it’s works very well!
great content, every video contains gems, even on „basic“ stuff like playing against a 2-3
I really appreciate the compliment and I’m glad the videos are helping you learn. That’s what it’s all about!
It makes a lot sense. Thanks for sharing.
good content, cant wait for more helpful information like this😁
Thanks! I’ll have a video out soon with set plays to run against the 2-3 as well! Stay tuned.
Bro, it is a great video and I subscribed you 👍 it would be great if you can make all the scenarios and ways to destroy 23zone. For example, high post, high-low, swing and overload, screen on wing, A pass from top to low so on
This is clear and concise!
Thanks!
amazing content !!!!
This help me understand the game so much in those 'pick up' games
Nobody should be playing zone in pick up 😂 but on a serious note, I’m glad the video was helpful! Thanks for the comment.
@@TheFilmRoom1 The context is that in a pick up especially in a small hood you played with any kind level of player, they do a lot of random stuff thats why understanding easy basket and concept book is way helping for increasing iq to play
Really clear and helpful teaching
Thank you!
Thank you💯💯
This video needs more views
It's interesting to see how bad NBA teams play offensively against zone. The increased pace harms the attack's IQ when you need to move the ball more. NCAA players also leave for the NBA earlier and earlier and do not fully develop the collective aspect of the game.
Yes we need longer paces
when doing this notice how the low post guy is always open easy way to get a bucket because the defending team is has the their attention on the perimeter
loved the video, would also like to know if you could do this with the 3-2 zone thanks.
Thanks for the comment. Glad you enjoyed the video. There seems to be a lot of interest in zone offense right now & I’m about to release a video for 2-3 Zone Set plays to supplement this one. I have plans to do 1-3-1 Zone next, but can get one done for 3-2 as well. Give me a couple weeks! Thank you
32 defense. Have a slasher working the shit out of the baseline leaves the other back guy stuck on an island, when slasher do their thing. Your either gonna get a nice look at the basket off the backdoor pass or slash. Or get the top wings to sag down leaving your guards space to drive and dine. Or quick ball reversal to beat the closeouts and get good looks . The baseline slasher should be able to rebound and look for quick put backs. Any motion that gets the defense to over extend their coverage leaves openings. Just gotta work to be able to alwayea see the angles
Thanks coach
Happy to help!
I have begun to ball screen the 2-3 a lot in recent years as well.
It works very well! I’ll have a video out in the next couple days with some ballscreen options vs 2-3 zone
❤ this
Darvin Ham needs to watch this.
Another good read to make in a situation when one defender has to guard 2 (like at min 3:05) can be to pass to the wing (at the same side) if that defender closes the high-post (leaving open the other pass), right? Or am I missing something? Great video by the way!
Nope, you’re absolutely right. Once you get any situation (zone or man) where one defender gets caught trying to guard 2, you just have to throw it to the guy he doesn’t commit to. And if he tries to play between both, I always suggest hitting the guy closest to the rim because he’s out leveraged. Thanks for commenting!
very usefull
👏🏻👏🏻🔥🔥
Thanks
Celtics coaching staff needs to review this before their match ups with the Heat
The Denver Nuggets needed this
You kill zone with shooters, 1-3-1 corners and wings. 2-1-2 you kill it on wings and on the top of the arc. 1-2-2 you kill it with a center on the high post and cuts
Where my rec players at who are fed up 😂
how about the key to break the 2-1-2 zone? SORRY for my bad english:(
I’m just about to release a video on that! Stay tuned. Your English was just fine. 😊
Can you also do one for 2-1-2 zone?
Do you know of any teams in college that run a 2-1-2 defense? I don’t know that I’ve seen it.
@@TheFilmRoom1 No, I do not follow any teams in college basketball. I play in europe and 2-1-2 is used a lot. Maybe soms european team also plays 2-1-2.
That makes sense. Does anyone in Euroleague run it? I’m going to start doing videos from their games.
Is this actually 1-3-1 offense ? Making spaces through the high post
I would say no. In most cases, a 1-3-1 zone offense is going to have a 2 man front that offsets the top man. I have a video on 1-3-1 zone offense. Take a look at it sometime and let me know what you think!
Best teams I was on We had sets not plays
What is your distinction between sets and plays?
on 2k, just run a 3-2 offense
Who’s Here from Mr Awad Thing
Not sure what you mean?
@@TheFilmRoom1 no my team has to watch this video that what our coach said
The best
