You Always Come Out Stronger': How the Omaha Region and Its Missions Weathered Three Major Challenges at Once
When massive floods left Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska underwater in 2019, installation leaders turned to the Greater Omaha-area communities to help. At the same time, many airmen were traveling to nearby Lincoln for training while Offutt made long-planned repairs to its runway. Then, of course, a once-in-a-century pandemic came on top of all that. The collaboration between the missions and the communities to overcome those challenges has made the region more resilient. It also helped earn Greater Omaha recognition in the 2023 class of Great American Defense Communities, an Association of Defense Communities initiative sponsored by USAA.
