  • I love that at 3:20, Stephen redirect the attention a little bit to the audience, giving Dua applause etc, because he's sensing that his guest needs a bit more time to compose her thoughts. It helped Dua Lipa to relax and start being the interviewer. It's a subtle yet highly useful skill that Stephen has, and I really admire that moment.

  • You know why this conversation is so powerfull? Because they are both willing to listen to one another. That makes it a conversation, and not two separate monologues, as it so often is when you see people being "interviewed" on tv. The fact that the question is good, and the answer thought-over, only enhances the matter. It all starts with listening.

  • The profundity at 5:16 👌🏾 "Sadness is like a little bit of an emotional death but not a defeat if you can find a way to laugh about it. Because that laughter keeps you from having fear of it, and fear is the thing that keeps you from turning to evil devices to save you from the sadness. As Robert Hayden said, 'We must never be frightened or cajoled into accepting evil as our deliverance from evil, we must keep struggling to maintain our humanity though monsters of abstraction threaten and police us.' So if there's some relation between my faith and my comedy it's that no matter what happens you are never defeated, you must understand and see this in the light of eternity and find a way to love and laugh with each other."

    • People tend to focus on what's bad about religion rather than what's good about it because we, in a fallen-from-grace human society, don't like anyone to tell us what to do. We like to "protest," if you will, but most of the time we don't even really know what we're protesting against or who the-powers-that-be really are, only our skewed perception of them molded by propaganda. When you really get to know God, as Stephen said, live is about love and sacrifice. Some people aren't willing to sacrifice for those they love, let alone everyone else that doesn't love them back. That's why things are tough, a lot of us are too self-centered. And that's why this interview hits a chord with us so well; both of them are trying their best to be less centered on self and more centered on others and giving back to others in their own ways. God bless them (and you reading this).

Part of the beauty of Catholicism is that it is universal and we can pull from non-Catholic sources to illustrate universal Truth and presence of God. As a Catholic and theology graduate student, I find excellent pieces of theology in many works that seek to be theological or spiritual in nature. But one non-Catholic religious writer I find enlightening is Lao Tzu. Food for thought, I guess.

  • Often when people take offense to a joke, it's because the comedian is speaking about something dark, sad and painful. Racism, violence, etc. What they don't understand is the point that Colbert made here. That comedy, as long as its intentions are pure and good, is a way to lift us out of the darkness. If we can laugh at our most painful moments, we can rise above it. A form of catharsis. A salve for our wounded souls.
