Lyrics
Listen as your day unfolds
Challenge what the future holds
Try and keep your head up to the sky
Lovers, they may 'cause you tears
Go ahead release your fears
Stand up and be counted
Don't be ashamed to cry
You gotta be
You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold
You gotta be wiser, you gotta be hard
You gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm
You gotta stay together
All I know, all I know, love will save the day
Herald what your mother said
Readin' the books your father read
Try to solve the puzzles in your own sweet time
Some may have more cash than you
Others take a different view
My oh my heh, hey...
You gotta be
You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold
You gotta be wiser, you gotta be hard
You gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
Don't ask no questions, it goes on without you
Leaving you behind if you can't stand the pace
The world keeps on spinning
You can't stop it, if you try to
This time it's danger staring you in the face
Oh oh oh
Remember
Listen as your day unfolds
Challenge what the future holds
Try and keep your head up to the sky
Lovers, they may cause you tears
Go ahead release your fears
My oh my heh, hey, hey
You gotta be
You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold
You gotta be wiser, you gotta be hard
You gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger

  • People don't understand how much of a powerful impact music like this has on kids!! I come from a crazy family in Africa and suffered from depression from a very young age...i can remember when I was around 8 how nice this song would make me feel...cause it was positive and such good advice, something I lacked getting as a child. I disowned my whole family and now stay I'm the USA and have a family of my own. Im now 30 and still looooove this song so much wish Des'ree knew how far her beautiful song brought me❤

    • Cool, calm & collected I'm an existentialist I believe I exist both within myself and outside of myself, but my spirit and soul are one & I'm all for beautification and the empowerment of women regardless & irrespective of nature. Indiscrepantly we must slowly but surely bring an end to discrimination, don't ever hold hate in your heart or live in fear be fearless and unafraid of what tommorow might bring. I feel that this is not the ideal world & life is by no means perfect, but I think people could be kinder & at least try and care properly, but it's a very, very mad world. And I'm having an exostantual crisis black is white, and white is black, but I am grey a whiter shade of pale, but you've gotta be bad, you've gotta be bold, you've gotta be wiser, you gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger, sometimes I wonder if GOD is a woman which is silly but I bet he has a mum so if all else fails their is someone to hug him. Love this epic song from desree this is my going up town song, when I go to do my business in town this is the song that gets me in the big city up town vibe love this song, love female's, love my mum & GOD BLESS Y'ALL.

I hope you’re able to one day come to terms with that in your own way and find yourself in your new life without his being a part of it. So many hundreds of thousands of people are out there going through feeling similar to yours. Sometimes it helps me to remember that at the hardest times in my life, I’m not the only person who is feeling what I feel. You know? It can help to remember that you’re not alone. Sending you my best wishes and hopes for you and everyone who was left behind after his passing, from one human to another. 💕 This song unites us all.

    • Not really. When it comes to pop culture, including music, trends are decided by a handful of people, like producers and executives (the latter were, previously, mainly from record labels, but nowadays from online library services like spotify or deezer). During the time of concentrated means of recording (prior to the internet, that is, the time of big record labels) the sheer volume of promotion on radios was the deciding factor of what became popular. Nowaday anyone can record and publish their work online, but to get acknowledged by the masses most rely on either popular playlists on spotify etc., or going viral through short videos that take a few viral worthy secs of songs. In the end, safe for a few exceptions, what gets promoted is decided by small groups of people, it has always been. Individuals can have different preferences and demand different things, but there isn't any cohesion in society to form a significant movement that can actually cause any influence in what gets promoted.

  • This was one of our signature earth day songs when I was growing up. My father was a science teacher at the time. He passed just a year after the year this song was a hit on the airwaves. I revisit it quite often. It reminds me of the optimism and hope in my father's heart.

  • Lyrics: Listen as your day unfolds Challenge what the future holds Try and keep your head up to the sky Lovers, they may cause you tears Go ahead, release your fears Stand up and be counted Don't be ashamed to cry You gotta be You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser You gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together All I know, all I know, love will save the day Herald what your mother said Read the books your father read Try to solve the puzzles in your own sweet time Some may have more cash than you Others take a different view My oh my, eh, eh, eh You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser You gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together All I know, all I know, love will save the day Time asks no questions, it goes on without you Leaving you behind if you can't stand the pace The world keeps on spinning Can't stop it if you tried to The best part is danger staring you in the face, oh Remember, listen as your day unfolds Challenge what the future holds Try and keep your head up to the sky Lovers, they may cause you tears Go ahead release your fears My oh my, eh, eh, eh You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser You gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together All I know, all I know, love will save the day Yeah, yeah, yeah You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser You gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together All I know, all I know, love will save the day Yeah-yeah Got to be bold Got to be bad Got to be wise Do what others say Got to be hard Not too too hard All I know is love will save the day You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser You gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together Source: LyricFind

If you're around my age, you probably remember hearing this song a lot on PBS Kids/WTTW (Channel 11 in Chicago) every morning around the time that Sesame Street, Barney, Arthur, etc. was coming on back in the 90's and early 2000's. This song as well as the version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow by Iz Kamakawiwo'ole made PBS Kids lit asf. LBVS

    • Derrick Jackson I know you commented this two whole months ago, but just want to let you know reading this comment made me shed a tear. I’m a few years younger than you, but am in my twenties, I was born and partially raised in Chicago. Channel 11, is where I first heard this song. Same with the Over the Rainbow. I remember the programming block with Arthur, Wishbone, Between the Lions, etc. And it really takes me to a state of serenity, of a child’s imagination. A colorful place I guess. It’s three in the morning and I don’t live in Chicago anymore, haven’t for 13 years, but that is by far one of my most beautiful memories in an otherwise sort of strange childhood. Thank you so much for this comment.
