I can't reach 170bpm, here is how I tap

I have always been slow, it is very demotivating to not be able to play many 5 star maps after 1355 hours of playtime

  • Hello, 1.6k speed stamina player here. I'd like to share my experience of improving in these areas. When I was at around 200k, I came across a video about the khz method for playing long stream maps, and I started spamming that particular map relentlessly. I began at 140 BPM and achieved around 36% accuracy with only a 150 combo. I kept playing the map using No Fail (NF), even when my fingers started hurting (I know this was not a good approach). However, after a while, I noticed that when my stamina ran out, I could tap lighter to the point where you could barely hear it, and I could still continue. By doing this a few times, I improved my combo. I prioritized increasing my combo rather than focusing on accuracy. I also would play 4-5* low bpm finger control map with NF that i couldn't pass. Based on my experience, I believe that if your tapping is already comfortable for you, there is no need to change your tapping style. However, you can try tapping lighter (although I know this is easier said than done) and find a comfortable balance between the lightness of your taps and the speed you're aiming for. I might not be able to explain it well to others, but I'm sharing what I've experienced. For me, the main factor in improvement was motivation to keep playing. In the past, I would have sessions where I pushed my skill limit by playing higher star-rated maps (at least those where I could achieve a B rank), rather than attempting maps I couldn't handle (resulting in D ranks). also if you're stuck just try playing other type of map for some session to have fun, with that you would not get demotivated playing the game, hope this helps.

    • Motivation is definitely a HUGE factor in improvement. I hit a hard plateau for about a year and just couldn't see any improvement (and at times it felt like I was getting worse, despite playing nearly every day). Decided to drop the maps I was grinding and retry spamming on, tried different style maps, stopped caring about pp, and even moved over to osu!lazer for all the customizability and fun mods. I'm still terrible at low AR, but I at least feel like I've improved at least a little in all the areas I had been stagnating in before.

Videos like these not only help you, but also everyone who takes the time to implement some of your thinking in their own game. I hope you achieve your goal soon, sadly I am not good enough to give you legitimate personalized advice on tapping technique.

  • i play mania only so know nothing about aim, but I think i figured out what's off about your tapping. Your middle finger is constantly hitting your middle key when you're streaming and I'm pretty sure that's not good technique; at least, when I try allowing my middle finger down I fingerlock almost instantly (and I can stream like 230bpm index-middle, burst like 280). I searched up some KZhead videos of top index-ring players like Vaxei and BTMC and they all see to have the middle finger floating as well. The main thing is that your normal alting seems fine on jumps, but the moment you switch to streams your entire hand position changes and it's kinda too flat and also definitely an unnatural position for you. (See 4:02 for a prime example of this.) My advice: try to consciously keep your middle finger from hitting that key. One way you might practice this is by holding down your D key and tapping your A key without letting go of D repeatedly (making sure your middle finger doesn't hit the S key). This should help develop finger independence (since you are hitting middle+ring together). The end goal is essentially to prevent your hand position from changing so much between alting and tapping (at least for now, later when you have fully developed your tapping technique you can do funky stuff like BTMC does lol). Also, typical advice of keeping your hand relaxed goes too. You don't want it flopping around like a fish at 4:05

    @bobth6095@bobth609513 күн бұрын
    • your middle finger hitting the middle key isn't really a limiting factor. it actually helps some people stablise their tapping when playing index ring by subconsciously keeping their middle finger on a key, including me (if you want an actually good player as an example, thekushmanvan also does this)

      @nishiko28@nishiko2812 күн бұрын
    • @@nishiko28 Okay, so I've looked at thekushmanvan's handcam and there's a very important difference. thekushmanvan's tapping doesn't bottom out the middle key when it's hit; that is, even though kush's middle finger is hitting the center key, he clearly still has control of his tapping. But what we see in the above video is that the player is nearly bottoming out the middle key quite often. Not only that, but kush's tapping doesn't even hit the middle key when he's streaming, it only does when he's alting normally, whereas this player is basically the opposite. The reason the middle key is bottoming out is because of bad technique. The player in the above video needs to make sure that their hand does not suddenly flatten when they are streaming (which it does very clearly at 4:04) because that just causes a lot of finger tension. What he needs to do instead is stream with his fingers in a very natural position, like how you'd rest your fingers on the home row of a keyboard. You shouldn't feel any tension whatsoever in the hand or fingers. The only hand muscle you are consciously activating is flexors (joint muscles) at the base of the finger.

I hope OP (@uniter343, that is) reads this cause it seems like I'm one of the few comments addressing problems with the issues of technique. Comments that just say to play harder/more maps don't really help if after playing 1355 hours OP still can't improve because that most likely means there is a technical issue at play rather than one of raw skill pushing

  • I had this issue when I was a full alt player. I recommend practicing singletap (remember to use your wrist), that helped me immensely. Not full alting also improved my "tapping consistency on long stream sections but worsened my fingercontrol (triples, doubles etc..). I'm pretty sure that Flyingtuna also improved at speed by doing a routine of singletapping 500 clicks before and after they played with each finger. Remember to also play maps that are barely above your speed skill level so you can feel the burn, and don't tense up any fingers for speed, that will come bite you in the butt in the future.

  • Other comments here have some good advice but I want to give my take also. Find a technique that prioritizes speed over everything even if it’s not comfortable and use it until it becomes normal. Try anything and everything to prioritize speed and technique and comfort will come with time. This is how I became pretty good at speed. For low bpm long streams try modifying your technique to tap harder and play even lower bpm. I kind of suck at long streams and low bpm but through tapping harder and playing lower bpm I feel like I’m getting more consistent at it at least.

  • first, your tapping is pretty decent for your rank already i think focusing on your aim and consistency will be better play mid to high 6 stars or 5 stars with hr to push your other skills instead of focusing on the fact that you cant do some 5 stars, since some 5 stars are extremely difficult your tapping will improve along with your other skillsets (big value) Also, do not feel bad, I had to play bluenation, blue army, other 160-180bpm maps with NF for months before being able to do them with B rank (this was also like rank 20k lol) I think the key is to keep trying your best even if you dont have stamina anymore and you are only getting 100s 50s and misses if you feel burn that means its working take breaks in between tries and stretch hands your tapping skill plummets every time you take a break too, but it comes back within a week or two of playing good luck!

  • damn, i was there 3 years ago, now i can (kinda) stream 170. i fc'ed the long stream practice 160bpm diff with 96 acc and 170 with 87 last month (and i barely play this month smh). i wasn't playing as much as you so it took me some time, but i think you can improve faster than me. anyway here are some suggestions (and some might be objective) 1. try not to life your fingers too high up, it will drain your stamina faster. i found myself more comfortable playing streams and bursts after fixing it. 2. just remember to warm up before playing 3. try not to tense up when playing stream (unfortunately you have to figure it out yourself, but that moment when you can stream without tensing up, it feels great! maybe start with bursts first and then move on to longer ones) 4. this one is for long stream practice maps, make the unstable rate bar bigger, you can use that to track how fast or slow you are tapping (i'm guessing you knew this already). when you are behind rhythm, relax your hand because tensing up will make you lose stamina even more (apparently i always tense up here smh, but sometimes i manage to relax and it helped) 5. remember to take breaks and don't play too much in 1 session, i knew this in my head but took it too lightly and hurted my arms a few times. this one too, you will have to figure out yourself when to stop anyway gl improving, ask me anything you don't understand or disagree with (or uh.....well...watch spare's video on how to improve speed and stamina, it has all the tips you need, the rest is just figure out your own technique and refine it) also take all of this with a grain of salt, i'm only 56k-ish and not that good at stream

  • You might wanna play around with positioning and natural ranges of motion. Find the sweet spot in your switches and generally hover around there as well. You want to try to put in the least amount of effort for the most output. That being said, you can go faster if you push a bit, but you need stamina before you can. Also, while it's mostly preference, play around with wrist positioning. In general, even for mania players, the options are either wrist down or up. Despite maybe better finger control, lower wrist isn't as advantageous when you consider how things push and pull on each other in your forearm. On the topic of that, you wanna generally feel it in your forearm because that's where most of the power and stamina come from. I moved my arm positioning to be somewhat similar to the angle drummers have to take full advantage of it and I had a huge jump in stamina and speed from it. To put it simply, wrist up, lighter tapping, and consistent practice of stamina before speed. It would be a good idea to look into spare's streaming stuff. For drummer technique, it's a bit different from most drummers, but I got my speed from watching Riccardo Merlini's guides for his one handed stroke techniques.

  • Most important thing would be to push yourself more, play stream practice maps with hundreds of notes long streams even if you have to push through them with 60% acc (in the video you played a diff that was too easy for you, I suggest higher bpm). Once you find yourself in a position where you have to pull through a few notes more you will find what position works for you. Playing streams until you can no more will help you build up stamina but a lot of players ignore that and instead play what is comfortable for them. There is a step going from below 180 bpm to above 180 bpm because that is where streaming begins for most people (at least I think so). It looks like you are trying to tap the streams (as if they were individual notes like jumps) and your finger control is not very good looking by unstable rate. You are changing position of your fingers a lot when tapping and that is unnecessary movement that is making you less consistent. When I stream I would often arch one finger more than the other but I don't use ring finger, maybe try arching both of them less and move your hand further away since you are full alt anyway.

By contrast, your middle one will be more powerful. 2. Try to tap lighter so as to keep your stamina. 3. It is said that practicing at a suitable bpm rather than pushing yourself to your limits is better, and the stability is more important than speed. Constant practice is also crucial. To me, my stamina is not enough and my fingers are uncontrollable while playing. Hope this help.

  • It's a bit hard to tell from your hand cam, but it seems like you are tensing your wrist too much. Try focusing on keeping your hand / wrist as relaxed as possible when playing streams. Find a way to comfortably offload the strain somewhere else (in my case its my forearm). You may feel a slight burn like you would when working out at the gym, this is a good thing and helps build your muscles which eventually will cause a gain of speed. Be careful though, if you feel any pain at all your technique is bad and you will need to do some more theory crafting with it. GL!

  • There are couple of things that I'd like to discuss First, you are underestimating your skill. This osu stream benchmark is useless, since it doesn't really showcase your osu skills. There you overfocus on getting the bpm as high as possible, whereas in osu you are clicking to a certain rhythm that is defined by the map. Also, as the website lacks visual cues, you are doomed to overthink your tapping. Even in this video you've shown 170~ bpm maps with 8-16 note bursts that you managed to hit perfectly. In 140 bpm long stream clip, I could see that you have stamina for it, but fingerlock and fail to consistently hit it. That is not about your stamina, that's about your fingercontrol. So don't make this mistake of feeling overwhelmed for no reason. Second, be real, you are not giving it your all. What I assume your are doing is play some maps that exhaust or inflict pain upon your hands. But that's not everything when talking about improving at streams. You need to step out of your comfort zone to improve: you must learn fingercontrol, you must learn deathstreaming, you must learn speed, you must learn low ar, because each of this aspect has an impact on your perception of streams. And by learning I mean finding good ways to improve that work for you, not simply sticking to things that don't work for you because someone did that before. Try and journal different routines, so that you could evidently see your results. It might be exhausting and tedious, but oh man there's no easy road to being good. Besides that, your physical and mental health in conjunction play a big role. Make sure you have a good night sleep, have a good hygiene (as it improves your self esteem and overall happiness) and try to lower your stress (e.g. don't postpone your school/college assignments, instead postpone osu to make gaming experience more rewarding and chill 😇). As the last resort, hire a good coach like ryuk that would teach you through, give you good maps and advice. I bet you haven't given it your all yet, so it's up to you whether or not you will. Third, ask yourself what this game mean to you. Maybe you are using osu as an escapism mechanism and don't really enjoy the game, but run from the problems in your life, or maybe your are lead by feeling of conquer (trying to overcome some other player), which might also mislead you into thinking that you like the game. I'm not saying that any of these must take place, but that you should think whether or not you really enjoy the game and have the motivation, as the motivation is the primary factor on the road to great improvement. Based on your current bottleneck, I would suggest you to play marathon maps with 140-160 bpm where streams are not simply square. That's where you must practice to overcome fingerlock and come up with the technique for hitting long streams consistently. This must be uncomfortable and irritating, and when you'll first feel like it really is, that's a good sign of improvement. This might help your to improve at overall streaming. Personally, after practicing low bpm stream maps for 30-60 minutes, I would feel my long stream stamina rising by 15-20 bpm easily, even though the bpm is low (the reason being it's all about overcoming fingerlock and having a consistent technique). But you can't neglect your speed as well. Play maps that have bursts 10-20 bpm higher than your comfortable bpm. You must feel sourness in your hands but not sharp pain. Sourness is a good sign. Try both of these routines consistently for a week or two and you'll surely notice some results

For you, lower bpm streams like blue zenith +ht, ascension to heaven +ht, and sidetracked day +ht would work. Also, if you have your fingers hover around the actuation point instead of bottoming out fully, your speed will improve, at the cost of unstable rate. When bottoming out, I can do around 175-180, but when not doing so, I can stream 190+ bpm playing lots of finger control can also help, and you seem to have decent unstable rate while streaming, at least in the stream speed tester I'm rank 340k btw
