Duke head coach Kara Lawson has accomplished nearly all there is to accomplish in her sport: From Final Fours to Olympic gold medals, to a WNBA championship. But it was one off-season speech to her Duke players that might be the most impactful moment of Lawson’s storied career.

  • I awoke this morning and turned on my TV, which was on ESPN. A feature on Coach Lawson and this speech was already playing, and I watched the rest of it. It may not be possible to have such an important philosophy expressed in a more succinct way. I then watched the full video, and I encourage everyone to do the same. Thank you to Coach Lawson and to the person who thought to record and later to share her speech with everyone. I'm always going to root for you.

  • Good Morning, Coach Lawson. I was sitting on my couch, drinking coffee and watching KZhead while I prepared my mind to go in for another cancer treatment. Your talk came to me at just the right moment. Thank you. I am retired now, but I spent most of my life coaching. During my coaching years, I wanted to be the best coach possible, so I studied the most successful coaches to try to understand what made them great coaches. I formed the opinion that the great coaches all are great motivators. I don't think that x's and o's make a great coach. All coaches know the x's and o's. The great coaches are able to motivate their players and inspire them to give their all on the field of play and face adversity when things don't go as you wanted them to go. That's you in a nutshell. Thank you for this message. I needed it this morning. May God continue to bless you as you prepare your charges for their battles on the court and in life.😀

  • Truly an excellent life lesson!! I absolutely will share this "Handle Hard Better" life lesson with my girl, an amazing and unique, kind-hearted young lady who is burdened with a serious struggle that can creep up on her during vulnerable moments. I know this message will have a meaningful impact on both me and my girl's life, and for that, I am grateful to Kara and her extraordinary message and life lesson. ❤

  • Success depends on how you handle challenges. Challenges don’t stop coming, never let them hold you back. Find a way and with each challenge your better prepared for the next. Never give up, never fold. Get up every time you get knocked down. Life is not easy it’s not supposed to be. Character is built during hard times.
