  • When you were a kid, you never looked into your future and imagined that someday you'd never have the $$ to own a house, own a car, buy yourself an occasional nice thing, etc. More and more people now can never imagine a future where they can afford any of those things, so they don't care about petty theft if they can get away with it.

When was the last time you didn't "Buy" a car on credit, trading in your previous one to keep the cycle rolling? Have you ever paid off and owned a car? 90% of people haven't, and that's basically "Renting" friend. So much in life you no longer own, at best you rent it on credit. That's the company store model our great grandparents and their parents spent 100 years to break us out of.

    • If you have a skill thatis in demand, then this is the insane ifestyle you can expect in the west. You need to remember a country needs to be cohesive, innovate, have low crime, attract the right people to pay the insane bills; NHS, police, fire, Armed forces MI5, Mi6, criminal justice system, prisons, housing and other free benefits, pension. For fw decades ONLY, there were opportunities, and hardworking people could afford this stuff. World travel with tiny airfares is all new, as is the net for example. Now, there is phone/social media addction, imagined lives for 3 hours a day instead of getting a skill.

I remember spending what felt like an eternity in a cell counting the small tiles on the wall of the cell of the police station while deeply dreading the arrival of my parents. The experience so seared itself into my conscience that I could conjure up the image of the cell wall just by closing my eyes, which kept me from committing all manner of crimes ever after.

  • James, I watched the thieves who defrauded the entire world for profit in 2008 walk away from the untold harm they did to ordinary people with no repercussion of any kind. In fact, most of them increased their wealth ... a lot. I am a 'goody two shoes', never stole anything, never would, but even I can understand how a lack of respect for the norms has been engendered. Law is respected only when it applies to all, equally.

It became a service as opposed to an force and that ethos has permeated throughtout policing. So instead of taking a tough stance on crime as per your experience, now policing is more concerned with all manner of weird crimes that didnt exist in your day like facebook threats and mean tweets. Maybe be in a receptive mood and not so rude to your callers when you personally dont agree with them

  • When the police have no resources to spare to pursue non-violent shoplifting and the shop staff are threatened with immediate dismissal by their employers for attempting to prevent theft - it's entirely down to the customer to choose to pay or not. A store security guard is the only defence for a shop. Unfortunately that is an unaffordable option for many stores.

You only had the fear that something much worse would happen. The problem is when many people feel like they are resigned to the lower classes, they will continue to shoplift and commit property crimes well into their 20s because they have nothing to lose.

The outcome has been a nation increasingly fragmented, where individuals struggle to make ends meet on insufficient wages as the relentless pursuit of profit margins dwindles to minute percentages. Moreover, a prolonged 40-year conflict against unions has constrained the safeguarding of workers' lawful entitlements."

For a start, the thieves might be stealing to make money for drugs etc. (not all though) by selling food to people who can't afford shop prices. Then the police force is so stretched thin (because of cuts) that they have to priorotise crimes to investigate, especially when new crimes and demands increase in the workload.

All copied recordings deprive musicians of money, or at least that was the case in the 1980s. Not sure if that still applies with all the online platforms.

They can, on their word, write it off on their taxes and get full retail value for it not cost value. Its for that very reason a large portion of returns are destroyed in trash compactors. 9 out of 10 returned items i bet at the one i worked at went straight in the crusher. Its more profitable to write it off as a loss for the full sale value than to pay to ship it back for repackaging. Waste at its best

To be fair, I knicked 20ps worth of sweets in 1986 and got caught, garage attendant said "you ever do this again, I'll tell your dad". • A vinyl LP was about £4 in 1986, which is £11.51 today allowing for inflation. And it was the same price even if it was a double album. But vinyl albums cost 3 times that today. The new Beyonce is £35 on vinyl. New Pearl Jam: £40. New Taylor Swift: £45. The vinyl market is a ripoff today. Charging even more for ltd. edition coloured pressings. Is it Billie Eilish calling for official restrictions on the number of variations allowed per release, to cut back on obsessive fans being ripped off?

  • The guy claiming that the cavalry horse had never seen a field wasnt being truthful. The horses are hacked out in Hyde Park and Hounslow Heath everyday and the horses are regularly sent to pasture too. In the summer they even get taken on a beach holiday in West Wales - no, they really do. I was in a cavalry regiment and our officers had horses. They cared far more for their horses than for the men under their command.

  • If James O'Brien got a slap on a wrist why shouldn't everyone else, he seems to be condemning people for getting the same treatment he got. It might not seem relevant but as the numbers of people in population changed since then, that may have an impact on the statistics.
