A lack of pain does not equate to a lack of consciousness, it equates to a different experience for consciousness to experience. It alters the way consciousness interprets it's surroundings and experiences through the medium of the brain. The brain is like the universal translator that allows consciousness to experience it's existence, it is not the source of consciousness, nor does putting electrodes on someones synapses prove that consciousness is formed in the brain, it merely alters the experience that consciousness has, like switching the translation device to a different language.
