This is awesome. Never knew this was a sport. I would love to see more events.
A list of women's 400m world records for perspective: 2:56.48 - immersion (this event) 3:12.10 - surface (swim with snorkel and monofin) 3:44.65 - bi-fins (swim with snorkel and two fins) 3:56.40 - freestyle (normal swimming) 4:26.36 - individual medley 47.60 - running
Surface finswimming looks a lot like this, where competitors use an undulating motion with their arms forward in a streamline position. Bi-fins finswimming looks like freestyle, but with a fin on each foot.

Wow they are 40 seconds faster than the men's 400m freestyle world record. Insane.
Who would have guessed swimming with fins would be faster
@@joshjjjjj25 40 seconds of 400m is a lot. I didn't say "wow they are faster". Stop being a fucking dipshit.
Didn't even know this was a thing... Edit: I never thought this comment would've reached so many likes. This is the most I've ever gotten.
I think we're all at this point.
@@dupondavignon869 ** For sure **
What really amazes me it that it seems such a “developed” sport with equipment and technique seemingly standardized and medal favorites too. Is there a practical application to this sport? Are they faster than free style? Could a scuba diver hold his tank forward like that to swim faster for a bit? So many questions I now have!
So I watched a 400 meter women’s freestyle for comparison. Freestyle wr 4:02ish whereas this immersion race won in 3:00ish. Super fast!
I used to bodyboard in my college days on the East Coast / Hawaii. There is a reason why you wear swim fins. It’s much much faster.

My thoughts exactly. Kind of a lame sport
@@SimonWoodburyForget wtf are saying? Isn't swiming going as fast as possible for as long as you can? Swimming is not only a noble sport, it is also an important life's skill. I am a life guard and a free diver. Those fins come from free diving. This here would mean something if they would do it without the mini tanks. This way it is just stupid.
@@SimonWoodburyForget Ok I get it. If I continue this diacussion with you, it will be the same as with my wife. You are in it to win it, no matter what. You are obviously not engaged in sports. Ok lets bring on potato sack racing and midget tossing (not that kind of tossing...) and let you win this words race of logical arguments.
@@SimonWoodburyForget Ok, there we have it: since you, sir, are not an athlete, but rather a spectator, you regard sports as a game for your amusement, which makes your argument a valid one. I was one (not a pro), so as that and as a Lifeguard, I can asure you no athlete regards his or her sport as a game, let alone regard themselves as sircus clowns for the amusement of the masses. Perhaps a necessary evil, perhaps just as a necessity, because that is where the money comes from and athletes need to eat. I, as a free diver, was totaly oblivious to anything besides the distance between me and the depth mark and then back up to the surface. As a long distance swimmer, when you swim for 5 miles you meditate, you think of nothing at all, else you freak out. Swimming for three hours while conscious is boring. I allow myself to assume you are a very young person. I believe one day you might understand what I am saying here. It is mind over matter and a body is all matter. It is between me and it. Most people will not understand this, some athletes among them.
@@SimonWoodburyForget This was fun, wasn't it? I enjoyed our little talk. I finaly understand why we disagree: it is because you are a di... nahhh I am just teasing. We disagree because I have failed to emphasis a point which would have clarified we are not talking about the same thing at all. I have never competed with anyone but myself. Not since I finished high school. Free diving, long distance swiming, extreme weather condition field running, open road down hill roller blading, that kind of sports, I alwys did it alone.

Guys, i can tell you- I am doing that sports, and my back or stomach/abs doesn't hurts at all! My feet and thighs, that's it. They are HURTING ASF.
@@beater.6673 I can back this up...kicking is FIRE in your quads and the arch in your feet. Abs are definitely involved (initiate the correct posture for your legs to be in to kick properly), but, in large part, the quads are supplying the force....400meters is nightmarish

This is crazy fast, faster than normal swimming by far.
Malmsey yo no way
Yes, BUT they are using air tanks and takes the the point out of the competitive sport! Because when you do competitive swimming like I do you go into oxygen deprivation. When you don't have an air tank and fins!!!!!
@@Gina_Michel How is it different - you breath air while swimming, they breath air while swimming - its not enriched air.
@@simonlove99 It is different because when normal swimmers have to breath they have to raise or turn their head which slows them down because it takes increased effort and takes time to breath. Because of that swimmers have to work on breath control in order to lower the amount of times they breath to lower their race times. Which takes a lot of time to do. These swimmers do not have to worry about that or getting tired because of being out of breath because of the air tank. They also have fins which allow them to kick much much faster and harder.
@@techsupport00 Thanks for explaining the difference and I can understand the point. I can see the effort, control and practice that is required around breathing to perform in your particular sport. However, I'm pretty sure you also have to work hard on technique, endurance, muscle strength, steamlining, timing and many other facets to be competitive also. So Gina declaring 'takes the point out of competitive swimming' because one facet of the sport is different seemed to miss the mark to me. Fins are also not relevant to the competitive nature of the event - everyone is equally matched, so all that happens is the speed goes up and everyone needs to develop stronger leg muscles to handle the fins. Arguably it also increases the challenges with nailing the turns as you're approaching the end of the pool at a higher speed, therefore timing is more critical. As you can see, as a layman, I think the original point was somewhat unfair.
Thanks to this video, I didn't even know there was such a sport. This is a mermaid swimming competition!😄
Must be so much fun moving that fast through water!!!
It is! 💫

I never heard or seen such a sport until now, pretty cool to watch. Am I the only one that didn’t know this existed?
Terrible sports commentary
I uhh uhmm what?
As I replied to others' comnents: this is not their native language and for a niche sport like this they don't need to import a native English speaker commentator who is likely gonna be a celebrity type drama queen requesting attention and making it all about themselves. Meanwhile, Americans speak 1 language, judging from your last name, you probably speak 2 languages. But that's not because you learned it at school or a language course, but because you were born to immigrants. That's a fact. So think twice before you run mouth about some random Serbian guys commenting in a language they learned at school, in a language that is not present in their country (I know that for Americans it's hard to grasp that not everyone speaks English in their countries, etc.). You can run your mouth about it once you learn a foreign language that is not present in your environment and then go on national television or at least KZhead and speak on camera in that language. Simple as that.
youtube: you are an immersion swimmer fan now me: ok.
