The 2021 NFL rookie QB class was one of the most hyped up in NFL history as it featured five first round QBs and three others who could one day lead a franchise. As we have now have three years to evaluate the class, there is likely only one starter this upcoming fall and it has been very disappointing. Today, we are going to go through each and every QB drafted and talk about what happened, enjoy!
Why has the 2021 Qb class been so bad? What year/position should I do next?
Scott, Justin is the biggest outlier in this draft class. He'll be fine but I can't really speak for the others, Chicago has a bad history with fumbling young qbs. It didn't work out it is what it is but it's not over for him.

2021 was just a weird year for quarterbacks. There were a bunch of teams desperate for quarterbacks who over-drafted a bunch of guys who were clearly not first-round pick-worthy. I think COVID influenced the poor evaluation of these quarterbacks. Coming out of high school, Trevor Lawrence was the number one rated high school quarterback and player and Justin Fields was right behind him ranked number two. After that, the rankings take a free fall. Mac Jones was the 29th-ranked quarterback coming out of high school, Zack Wilson was ranked 53rd and Trey Lance was an abysmal 115th-ranked quarterback coming out of high school Seriously, Trey Lance was the 115th-ranked quarterback in the nation out of high school and only played one full season for a 1-AA school and went on to be the third pick in the draft????? That makes no sense. It seems like Trey Lance was a bust waiting to happen. Ten to fifteen years ago, a quarterback with Trey Lance's resume would not even have been drafted at all.

Yeah, you think it was the most overhyped. It wasn't. Let's keep it a stack outside of Justin and Trevor the other qbs were not worth the picks and of course I'm talking about Wilson and Lance. Justin and Trevor were well worth the hype for a variety of reasons, it doesn't make sense to write him off cause he still has the time and skill.

The Bears didn't do anything with Justin to warrant writing him off, when the Bears drafted Justin that's when the rebuild should have been in process. Justin is most definitely a starter in this league, it didn't work out in Chicago it didn't work out for Steve Young in Tampa. You should be worried that your favorite squad doesn't mishandle another young gun.

2007 was the worst in the modern era... JaMarcus Russell, Brady Quinn, Kevin Kolb and a bunch of other backups.

Never forget Mike Zimmer on Kellen Mond. He was asked if he is going to play Mond more to see what he has. Zimmer responded "I see him everyday" as he benches him until he's fired that off-season

Well Josh Allen is barely 'good' anymore to begin with, and the Bills window is well closed. They just haven't figured it out yet, they have never accomplished anything with him and now he's paid double the cap hit what he should be. Experiment over
You gotta take a swing when you got a chance. How many people thought that Josh Allen was going to be a bust, lots. How many people thought Justin Herbert was a reach, lots. How many people thought Lamar was just another running QB and was going to bust. How many people really knew who this Mahomes guy was leading up to the draft, not many. Then you have Brock Purdy, completely overlooked but got a chance because of the situation he was in and has been very successful. Potential is something they all got. Success will come depending on where the player lands, the team that's in place and how it is built as they play, the coaches around them and their own internal motivation to be their best. Take a chance when you got it.

Even as an ND fan, I was shocked Book got drafted. He was a solid starter in college, but he was smaller, didn't have a strong arm, and didn't have the legs to make up for any of it. The fact that he started a game in the NFL will always amaze me.
I thought Book was pretty trash in college ND never has to play a tough schedule and it showed in the playoffs that year when they played Clemson 😂
The 2021 class was worse than 2022 since everyone had major questions regarding the '22 class. The '21 class hyped constantly from the media and fans alike.
The 2021 class was not overhyped outside the qbs. The only qbs that mattered were Justin and Lawrence, Zack was overhyped, and Trey was not worth a 3rd pick.

To answer your question, nothing went "wrong" with them per se. They were all good at their respected positions in college. It's just when you start playing with the best in the world, if you're not literally one of the best in the world, then it shows. More people flunk out then actually make it in the NFL for a reason. And this is heightened even more when we're specifically talking about the QB position.
I’d argue that Belichick went wrong for Mac. He had a lack of weapons (everyone was a #2 option at best, with the depth guys being #4-5 receivers, excluding Devante Parker who was ruined by the injury bug), and his second year had the biggest joke of a coordinator it horribly regressed him. In the current NFL, if you have someone who looks like a potential franchise QB, you surround them with talent - both on the roster and the coaching staff. I can see Mac making a resurgence in 2-4 years. He won’t be a guy that can elevate a horrendous receiving core into a Super Bowl win, but he definitely can find a home like Goff did and be a perennial contender.
@@jolteon345I agree Mac got put in a difficult situation, maybe he'll have a bounce back year. I just don't think it'll be in Jacksonville...barring a Trevor injury being the exception. His situation seemed a lot like Pickett's situation in Pittsburgh. Matt Patricia and Matt Canada were the biggest jokes for offensive coordinator I've ever scene. Both oddly named Matt, lol. I would argue Mac's situation was even slightly worse than Kenny Pickett's as well. As you pointed out, the team built around him was dismal. Very few, arguably no, elite level offensive weapons.
As a jet fan, no, a LOT went wrong. Mainly a nepotism hiring coach with zero offensive knowledge, zero organization and a bachelor party buddy hired to be the rookie oc. That and the qb coach died...and they took a bust ot the year before, a bust wr the year before and threw a completely unprepared, uncoached zach to the wolves. It was a master class in incompetence
The Jets wasting the #2 pick on that sorry excuse for a football player is a microcosm of why the team has only been in one Super Bowl. & the ONLY Reason they won that one was because the Colts pulled the biggest choke job in SB History until Super Bowl LI, when the Falcons blew a 28-3 second half lead to the Tom Brady-led Patriots.

@@tiyalewhitehurst338 I can only guess that the style of football they play at BYU, along with its often creampuff schedule, allowed ZW's stats to present a skewed picture of how he would perform in the NFL. Jim McMahon & Steve Young were aberrations, though one cannot discount the awesome teams with which both were fortunate enough to be surrounded.

A guy that is in college football right now that reminds me a lot of Kellen Mond mainly because of his mobility and throwing motion is Brock Vandergrif
Is the problem with all these QB or the teams inability/unwillingness to take the time to develop them? Patrick Mahomes pre-draft evaluation - He will face a sharp learning curve when it comes to a Pro Style offense, needs to develop footwork, and sloppy footwork makes for inconsistent technique as a passer. He has inconsistent decision making, tendency to scramble at a moment’s notice could lead to injury at the next level, where defenders are bigger and more athletic than in college. There isn’t a professional team in which Mahomes fits as he is. However, there likely also isn’t an offensive coordinator, head coach, or quarterbacks coach that wouldn’t want to get their hands on him and develop his raw potential.
Unfortunately there's no such thing as being a developmental qb all quarterbacks drafted in the first round are expected to start regardless if they have fully developed their skills. Not all need to start off top. Some just need time to get right
yep...Manning was objectively awful the first season but it's a learning curve for the guy and made the most out of it. This is why this class of QBs did not really push to be better after a season of experience is just sad.
Jordan Love says hi. (Indeed, different Era but his predecessor also sat for years and turned out OK.) Baker Mayfield went 1 and probably would have sat for longer but for an inevitable freak injury to Tyrod Taylor, the good luck chuck of QBs. Even Mahomes sat for most of his rookie season.
I don't like the "bust" label because I don't think it is particularly fair to most recipients to be honest, especially if they were never going to be franchise players and knew that themselves. Let's be real, there is a huge difference between a guy like Davis Mills who has every chance to make a good career as a Back-up, a guy who spends a career on Practice Squad, or a Journeyman. Hey, being on the Practice Squad is still a career in football, even if you did under-perform your evaluation. I will also give a little bit of leeway for those like Mac Jones or Sam Darnold who didn't have a massive ceiling when they were Drafted, but whose development was crushed by poor coaching and play-calling. They are both either Journeymen or Career Back-ups, but that's FAR from being a Bust. All it means is that they are not going to be a Franchise Starter and both men have made their peace with that reality. Not everyone can carry off 'Journeyman in-demand' who also has a unique vibe to them a la Fitzmagic or his successor the mistachoed Mr Minshew. My other personal caveat is where there is a medical reason, such as a consistent struggle with injury or mental health that prevents the player from stringing together a respectable line of stats. "Bust" is a cruel label for someone who cannot take the field or shouldn't be on the field in the first place. If you allow for that criterion, Johnny Manziel should be removed from the list of busts given we know now he was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. We don't know precisely when he was diagnosed, and that is naturally his private business, but the odds against him maintaining a steady frame of mind and discipline to succeed is not good, especially if he is doing so untreated or struggling to find an appropriate treatment. His party lifestyle does fit the pattern of someone self-medicating, sadly, substance use disorders are common with the condition and the majority of people who have the condition begin experiencing issues during late adolescence and early adulthood - right at the right time. And naturally those such as Dwayne Haskins who pass far too young during their playing careers should not be considered busts either, even if they were leaning in that direction, because we never saw the totality of what they might be capable of. If they have to be graded, "Incomplete" or "in the round Grade X" and remembered for their success in reaching the league and anything they did whilst there. For me, to be a bust, rather than just a player who was over-drafted or who under-performed expectations, they have to be someone who is not employed by a team in any playing capacity after the end of their rookie contract, especially if they didn't complete the full term before leaving the league without any excuses. That's a relatively short list of guys who were unsuitable for the job they were asked to do like say Alex Leatherwood or Jamarcus Russell and don't have an understandable reason, be it health, chaotic organisation or being forced to play the wrong position to give leeway and sympathy. I would also consider Henry Riggs a bust for obvious reasons - a man who literally threw away his reasonably promising future, sabotaged his team and caused death for an innocent young woman in the prime of her life and her dog in such a needless way because of his own selfish ego. Self-destruction without a reasonable defence is definite "bust" territory for me.

It was overhyped, but as a Steelers fan i wanted Fields back then and was pissed that we didn’t try to jump and get him when he was rumored to be sliding. IMO, the Steelers would have done way better for him than Chicago.

That’s the excuse everyone makes when a QB is a bust. Look at CJ Stroud. He went into a bad situation in Houston with a team that had been losing for years and managed to have a historic rookie season. Sometimes a bust is just a bust regardless of “situation”.

Stroud is also just a really great player from what we have seen so far, while zach needs to develop more since he was a raw prospect who was drafted based off of his clear but fasho not reached physical talent
@@kc1john 100% Agree. "Bad Situation" is just a bad excuse. 90% of top prospects go to bad situations, it's why those teams have high picks. A good QB finds ways to rise above and become a star in a bad situation. Matthew Stafford and CJ Stroud are great examples of that. It's time to stop giving guys like Wilson and Fields that excuse. You already see people gearing up to use that excuse for Bryce Young.

Despite the fact that historically great QBs often go high in the draft (to teams bad enough to earn those high draft picks), and those QBs went on to be the sole catalyst that turned that team around for 10-15+ years. I would look at the 2019 Qb Draft Class because of Daniel Jones who is another QB who DID NOT belong in the NFL. Also 2007 is another one to look at.

Trask got robbed. Bowles had to save his job (which he himself endangered) and went with the veteran known quantity in Baker. To his credit, Baker, despite some shaky performances, came through when it counted.

Veddy Good Video. I'm glad you asked the question as to what might be at fault in Fields' case. I linked something in a reply elsewhere on this page about it. While it's not _all_ I have that indicates it was more the team than Fields, I don't want to paste other people's videos all over your comments section. (It's just that the one I did paste is important & exceptional). Even without that, did you *watch* the first game where he stared at an open receiver & seemed confused by seeing it? If so, do you remember what you thought or felt? For me, it was a dread that he'd been concussed & we didn't see it. Then the Bears didn't take him into the blue tent to check, not even after the drive. Then he did it again in the same game & they didn't take him out for protocol. & the dread switched to "Oh no: are they _deliberately_ telling him not to pass to certain receivers on certain plays?" Because how else can they _KNOW_ he wasn't concussed *unless* he was executing the plays as called? & there you have Only Part of what _I think_ is Deliberate Sabotage by the Bears. I'll continue only if asked.

No coincidence that these QBs were evaluated / developed so poorly… “Covid QBs”. So much talent and potential, but their careers were wasted because of decisions made by Roger Goodell.

Anyone who objectivity watched fields at ohio state knew he wasn't going to be elite in the nfl. 2019 ohio state was the most talented team in the nation and he played awful against clemson in the playoff. Tgen in the covid year he had a big game against clemson but the entire country decided not to play defense that year so...

I would argue Trevor Lawrence isn't anything special either, at best above average. If he does not ball out this year, the jags might think about drafting or signing a better QB since the rest of their team is good enough to be a decent playoff team.
This was not the fault of this draft class But the organization Look at the schools these guys came from How long does it take to transition from the college game and speed to the NFL ? All of these QBs should have had to carry the pad 🗒️ until year 3 or 4 Going against the 1s on defence with the twos until they could beat the 1s If they had done that and had a developmental plan they would just be taking over in 2024 None of them played in the same system consistently or under the same coach They all where on different pages then there offensive coordinators They didn't call the game as rookies the oc Did match the oc to the QB and then makes videos you will be surprised Look at the team drafting them and the skill level of the offense they where drafted to The running game Wr unit Offensive line Left tackle Tells you a lot Inexperienced QB and a mixed bag of talent and check out the offensive coordinators and head coaches I'm just saying

I am still in awe that the Jets gave up on #2 pick Zach Wilson in 2022 after he started 5-2. For what? Because he lost to the hated Patriots, and had the yips in a follow up press conference? Rex Ryan about lost his mind when the Jets did that.
They only won those games because of Breece Hall. Look at Zach’s stats in those games. They were awful and they won in spite of him. After Hall went down in week 8 at Denver, Zach only won 1 more game. And that game against NE was historically bad. Worst QB performance I’ve ever seen without any ints. In fact the pats dropped 2 ints. Only 2 passing yards in the second half. He literally could fall forward on the line of scrimmage and have more yards than he had passing.
Is it really that important to you to not give Zach ANY credit. Remember...Flacco went 1-3, White went 1-3 in 2022...in spite of how much better they were than Zach. P.S., I prefer wins over stats.

Breece Hall went on a tear from week 4 to week 7 in both rushing and receiving until he got a season ending injury in Denver. Hall was on his way to being a shoe in for OROTY until the injury happened. If all you care about is winning, let me break it down for you: post breece hall injury the jets went 1-4. Even before he was benched he went 1-2, both of those losses were to NE and he was absolutely putrid in both. Seriously what is it about this guy that he has so many defenders? I’ve never seen so much defense of a QB that’s accomplished so little.

Like it our not Fields was a bust because he failed to read defenses improve the passing game with the WRs and kept on demanding a lot more like brat. I am glad we traded him. Michael Penix Jr is a better pocket Passer than Fields. Also Tyson Bagent is better at leading, moving the chains and reading defenses than Fields.
