Lesson 66 - TOKORO - At The Moment When…

TOKORO is a noun that ordinarily means “place,” but as a pseudonoun, TOKORO means “the moment when…” or “state of being.” It modifies verbs (7 verb patterns here), adjectives and nouns. It also combines with particles such as: TOKORO WO, TOKORO NI/E, and TOKORO DE, with the particles modifying the meaning of TOKORO. TOKORO DE by itself means “by the way.”
Verb Patterns:
V-ru tokoro da = I’m about to…
V-te-iru tokoro da = I’m in the process of…
V-te-ita tokoro da = I’ve been doing…
V-ta tokoro da = I just finished doing…
V-you to shite ita tokoro da = I was about to…
V-ru tokoro datta = I almost/nearly…
V-ta tokoro de = Although/Even if…
Examples:
I’m about to eat dinner now. 今晩ご飯を食べるところです。
Mom is making sushi right now. お母さんは今寿司を作っているところだ。
Jiro just woke up now. 次郎君は今ちょうど起きたところです。
