Once only kept by aristocracy, this coursing dog was used to bring down prey fast. He helped create the 'new' revived Irish Wolfhound with his ancient genes. However, he is now struggling with extinction due to his working abilities being replaced by gundogs who retrieve what has first been shot by a hunter. Now simply kept as a pet rather than to work.
Find out everything today about his history and what its like to have one as a pet. Animal Watch is the ONLY KZhead channel that physically meets the dogs in person so all our shows are factually correct.

  • As much as I like the Irish Wolfhound, the heartbreaking fact about them is that they generally have such a short lifespan compared to the Deerhound. I would get one of these in a heartbeat if I had the space and funds.

    @nekite1@nekite19 ай бұрын
    • Totally agree on that, but it also depends on the breeder. A friend of mine, living in Austria, has two Irish Wolfhounds from a very responsible breeder. She focuses more on health than on size, which is why all her dogs die in an age older than 10 years. Right now, she even has a 13 year old female, who is still quite agile for such a giant breed. 😊

    • A lot has to do with diet as well. I've spoken to Irish Wolfhound breeders here in Ontario Canada and the ones who feed kibble say 6-8yrs. The ones who feed raw say they see lifespans of 10-12 yrs.

    • Actually Deerhounds do not need much space and surely no kennel. They need to be as close to their family as possible. I live with my Deerhound since more than two and a half years in my 60 sqm apartment in a big city and he loves it. What you definitely would have to do is to give him once a day the chance to run without a lead. Therefore I drive almost everday out to the countryside to let him run free. The rest of the time he is fine with snoozing or go go for a walk in the park. So, don't be fooled by their size or the fact that they are sighthounds. This is a really easy breed to live with and to handle even if you are a first time dog owner!

Rosie wore a jacket and legwarmers from thrifted sweaters and clothes and even a small knitted hat some lady gifted us and was the best girl ever. Her company kept us sane even when sleeping rough. • You might be surprised how much lower the Deerhound's energy level is! After all I have heard Huskies would run for 30 kilometers and ask you what is next. A Deerhound needs to do a couple of sprints every day (during the walk) and after 1,5 to 2 hours he is totally fine to return to his comfortable bed for a snooze 😉

You thought the wolfhound and the Greyhound were couch potatoes, well the Deerhound is king or queen at that. just great with kids and babies. Sadly I don't have one anymore they all passed away and I don't have the room or the yard space for them anymore, gut if I did deerhounds would become an essential part of my home.

Even though my Deerhound is constantly mistaken for an Irish Wolfhound (may be due his hight of more than 34 inches) I would always choose the Deerhound. On the one hand due his expected life span and secondly due to his figure. The breeder from whom I have my Deerhound also breeds Irish Wolfhounds. And when he was once asked about the way to distinguish the two breeds he just said: It is like the difference between the peasant and the esquire. And I surely prefer the esquire 😉

She is soooo gentle, doesn't pull on the lead and sleeps most of the day! She is 9 years old and I took her over from her previous owner, 2 and a half years ago, who didn't have the time to look after her. She has been really poorly this last year but has survived several illnesses that could have had a disasterous result. Long live the Scottish Deerhound, but they are very stubborn!!

Ireland was named " A British Isle" by The English when they tried to make us British, we rejected this over 800 Years and refused to be anything but Irish, ( Including 56% of Irish Nationalists in The 6 Counties in The North of Ireland). All the maps during this time were made by English who kept putting the stamp " British Isles" on both islands. To call an Irish Person British is an insult as we fought long and hard to preserve and protect our Lands , Culture and Identity. Britain was named Britain by The Roman's...They named The Island of Ireland Hibernia...so, now you know.

The problem with wolfies is that you never know if they are going to dodge to the left, the right... or even if they can see you. Definitely worth the pain though.

  • The deerhound is actually much closer to what the ancient extinct wolfhound was than what the modern recreated Irish wolfhound is. Personally I think crossing a deerhound with a wolfhound, or crossing a deerhound with a wolfhound x greyhound, is probably the best way to "recreate" the real wolfhound. Alternatively you can seek out the Maritsane or Steekhar from south africa, or the Galgo Patagonico from Argentina. The irish wolfhound is a very cool dog but has been outcrossed to very heavy boned mountain dogs, livestock guardians and mastiffs and today couldn't catch a wolf in a million years.

    • @@Elfrida-ls2mo Britain and even the UK as a whole is disunited politically, socially, culturally and linguistically. The poor political choices and decisions of Brexit have made the lack of unity ever clearer for the entire world to see. It's not just disunited, it's also completely imbalanced. Politically, it has devolved governments, but most of the power lies in Tory Westminster which has the UK at political loggerheads. These devolved governments squabble and fight amongst each other which details the disunity. Brexit was divisive and it shows how disunited the UK is with the occupied region called "Northern Ireland" and the country of Scotland voting No to Brexit. The UK is literally split down the middle in the Brexit debacle which makes it politically disunited. Furthermore, the UK isn't a voluntary union because Scotland is actively being denied another independence referendum post Brexit - this, again, makes it a disunited partnership + an imbalanced and undemocratic one. Welsh and Scottish independence is growing while talks of Irish reunification are on everyone's lips - this, again, demonstrates a disunited and imbalanced union. Socially, culturally and linguistically it is also divided and disunited as the different parts have their own culture and language. Brexit itself limits multiculturalism and encourages exclusive nationalism and nativism which in effect breeds racism and xenophobia (the very core of Brexit and Brexiteers). Great Britain was never united, but instead it's DISUNITED and IMBALANCED as well as UNDEMOCRATIC and UNJUST. And it's actively breaking up which is the ultimate win 😅

First of all, wolves take down wild pray and even have been known to take down brown and black bears! FACT! Secondly wolves hunt in packs and ergo a couple wolfhounds wouldn’t stand a chance when it came to a pack of wolves and one on one a Wolf has a more devastating bite force than any domestic dog! FACT! Ans other than wise tales? There’s no film ever showing an Irish wolfhound or even a record of domestic dogs killing a wolf! Wolves only avoid sheep dogs or dogs used to protect sheep! Because wolves don’t want the hassle and ergo the lack will 1:06 move on! Rather than deal with an annoying dog!
